Published · updated · Monthly GST collection statistics published on the GST portal; provisional figures released 1 September 2026.
Gross GST collections for August 2026 were about Rs. 1,99,853 crore, up 14.8 per cent on last August. The number worth noticing is refunds, which rose almost 68 per cent, leaving net revenue up only 8.3 per cent.
Gross GST collections for August 2026 came in at about Rs. 1,99,853 crore, roughly 14.8 per cent higher than the Rs. 1,74,116 crore collected in August 2025. The provisional figures were put out on 1 September 2026 and are the highest August total the tax has recorded.
The composition is worth reading rather than just the headline. Domestic collections were about Rs. 1,37,249 crore, up 9.3 per cent, while tax on imports rose far faster at about Rs. 62,604 crore, up 29 per cent. Central tax accounted for roughly Rs. 38,413 crore and State tax roughly Rs. 46,316 crore. The number that stands out, though, is refunds: about Rs. 31,795 crore went back out, some 67.9 per cent more than a year earlier. After refunds, net revenue was about Rs. 1,68,057 crore, a gain of 8.3 per cent.
What this means for you. Gross collections grew almost twice as fast as net collections, and the whole of that gap is refunds. If you export, or if you are sitting on credit accumulated under an inverted duty structure, the department is clearing refund claims at a much faster rate than it was a year ago. This is a good month to push a pending claim rather than let it sit.
