The GST Council meets in New Delhi on 12 September 2026, its first meeting since September 2025. Reports point to blocked credits under Section 17(5), inverted-duty refunds and registration reform, but no agenda has been published.
The GST Council will hold its 57th meeting in New Delhi on Friday, 12 September 2026, with the officers' meeting the previous day. The Council Secretariat's meeting notice went out on 28 August. It will be the Council's first sitting since the 56th meeting in September 2025.
No agenda has been published. Press reports suggest the Council may take up relaxation of the blocked credits in Section 17(5), which keep input tax credit out of reach on motor vehicles, food and beverages, health services and club memberships; refunds of credit accumulated under an inverted duty structure; and simpler, more standardised registration. Treat all of that as unconfirmed. The notice itself says the venue and agenda will be communicated in due course, and Council meetings have gone in directions nobody trailed beforehand.
What this means for you: nothing changes on 12 September. Council decisions are recommendations. They bite only when CBIC issues the notifications, and the notified date is usually weeks later. So do not hold back a return, a refund claim or a credit reversal in the hope of relief.
What is worth doing before the meeting is listing the credits your business has written off under Section 17(5) and the refund claims you have not filed because of the inverted-duty rules. If either is eased, you want those numbers ready rather than reconstructed months afterwards.
