Published · GSTN Advisory dated 29 July 2026, "Advisory on Keeping on Hold the Proposed e-Way Bill Enhancements" (https://www.gst.gov.in/newsandupdates/read/668)
GSTN has kept the proposed e-Way Bill enhancements on hold until further notice. The mandatory Ship-to GSTIN field and the new e-Way Bill closure facility, both due from 1 August 2026, will not take effect, and the earlier advisories are being withdrawn from the portal.
GSTN has put the proposed e-Way Bill system enhancements on hold until further notice.
The enhancements were announced in two advisories dated 9 June 2026 and 17 June 2026, with detailed FAQs following on 2 July 2026. They were to take effect from 1 August 2026. The main change was that the Ship-to GSTIN would become a mandatory field in the IRN and e-Way Bill APIs wherever ship-to details were present, together with a new optional facility allowing the supplier, recipient or transporter to close an e-Way Bill once delivery was complete.
In its advisory dated 29 July 2026, GSTN said the implementation of those enhancements has been kept on hold until further notice, and that no changes are required to be implemented in the production environment pursuant to the earlier advisories until further communication. It also said all the related advisories, along with the FAQs, will be withdrawn from the GST Portal.
What this means for you: if your billing software, ERP or GST Suvidha Provider has already built the Ship-to GSTIN validation, do not push it to production. A mandatory-field check deployed against an API that has not actually changed will start rejecting perfectly valid invoices, and your e-way bill generation could stop on a working day. Ask your software vendor to confirm in writing that the 1 August changes have been rolled back on their side before your next billing cycle.
If you were waiting for the e-Way Bill closure facility to tidy up bills that stay open after delivery, it is not available. Continue with the existing process until GSTN issues fresh communication.
