Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Shenoy Nagar

Shenoy Nagar sits between EVR Periyar Salai and New Avadi Road, its metro station feeding boutiques, bakeries, diagnostic labs and coaching centres along 1st Avenue, Pulla Avenue and the Club Road stretch. Halls Road and Kilpauk Garden Road carry bank branches, clinics and small consultancies, while Bharathipuram and the P.P. Garden lanes hold flats let out commercially and serviced offices. Registration address changes, reverse charge on rent and place-of-supply questions on professional fees dominate here. From a first registration to the annual return, the full range of GSTR-9 Annual Return is available to Shenoy Nagar businesses without stepping far from the shop or office — documents travel over WhatsApp, and our Chennai premises are open to anyone who prefers a face-to-face discussion. We serve Anna Nagar and Aminjikarai on the same footing, applying one rule everywhere: reconcile before filing, file before the due date, and keep the client informed at every stage.

GST jurisdiction for Shenoy Nagar (PIN 600030): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai North Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Shenoy Nagar before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for Property Owners Earning Rent in Shenoy Nagar
Rental income has become a reverse charge maze. Commercial rent attracts 18 percent once your total receipts cross the Rs.20 lakh service threshold, counting rent from every property in Shenoy Nagar and elsewhere together. A residential dwelling let to an individual for personal living remains exempt, but the same flat rented to a GST-registered business makes the tenant pay tax under reverse charge under Notification 05/2022. Since 10 October 2024, even commercial property rented out by an unregistered landlord to a registered tenant shifts the liability to the tenant. A specialist maps each tenancy to the correct treatment and drafts rent invoices and agreements accordingly.
The cost of GSTR-9 Annual Return in Shenoy Nagar starts at Rs.4,999 as a fixed professional fee quoted upfront, with any government fees shown separately and no hidden additions later.
Why Us

Why Shenoy Nagar Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

✓

We Work with Your Existing Software

Tally, Zoho Books, Busy, marketplace reports, plain Excel or even a handwritten bill book — we take your data in whatever form your Shenoy Nagar business already maintains it. You are never forced to buy new software or retrain staff just to become our client.

✓

QRMP Managed Properly, Not Just Opted Into

Quarterly filing still demands monthly attention — IFF uploads so your buyers see their credit on time, and tax payment through PMT-06 by the 25th for the first two months of each quarter. We run that monthly rhythm so QRMP saves you effort without creating gaps.

✓

Transparent, Fixed Fees Quoted Upfront

You are told the full fee before we begin, in writing. No surprise additions for uploads, revisions or acknowledgements. Government fees and taxes, where applicable, are shown separately, so businesses in Shenoy Nagar always know exactly what the engagement costs them.

✓

E-Commerce Seller Reconciliation, Including TCS

Sellers on Amazon, Flipkart and other marketplaces face a three-way match between marketplace reports, GSTR-1 and the TCS the operator deposits against your GSTIN. We reconcile all three every period and accept the TCS credit, so sellers in Shenoy Nagar never leave marketplace deductions unclaimed.

✓

Every Return Reviewed by a Senior Consultant

No filing leaves our desk on a junior's judgement alone. A senior GST practitioner reviews your figures, ITC claims and tax computation before submission, so errors are caught at our table and not by the department months later through a notice.

✓

WhatsApp Updates at Every Stage

You receive a WhatsApp message when documents are received, when the draft is ready for your approval, and when the return or application is filed, along with the acknowledgement. You never have to call and ask what is happening with your file.

How It Works

Our Annual Return Process

Data compilation

We gather all twelve months of filed returns, GSTR-2B data, your annual books and the ITC register, and build a single year-wise working file.

Turnover reconciliation

Outward supplies per books are matched with GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, and every difference from credit notes, amendments or timing is documented with reasons.

ITC reconciliation and bifurcation

Credit claimed in GSTR-3B is reconciled with GSTR-2B and books, then bifurcated into inputs, input services and capital goods as GSTR-9 tables require.

Draft review and differential tax

We share the draft GSTR-9 with a note on any shortfall. If tax is payable, we compute 18% interest and prepare DRC-03 for payment.

Filing and closure

After your sign-off we file GSTR-9 before 31 December, file any DRC-03, and hand over the acknowledgement with complete reconciliation working papers.

★

Confidence During Officer Interactions

When a query or verification comes, you respond through a professional who deals with the department regularly, in the department's own language and format, instead of facing an officer's letter alone.

★

Compliance That Continues When You Travel

Illness, travel or a family function no longer threatens a deadline. With a standing external process holding your calendar and data trail, filings proceed on schedule whether or not you are at your desk.

★

Lower Total Cost of Compliance

A fixed professional fee is almost always cheaper than the combination of late fees, interest, lost credit and staff hours that informal, last-minute compliance quietly accumulates over a year.

★

Faster GST Refunds

Complete RFD-01 applications with proper statements and annexures move through the system faster and attract fewer deficiency memos, which means export and inverted-duty refunds reach your bank account sooner.

★

Goods That Move Without Detention

Correct e-way bills matched to correct invoices mean your consignments clear roadside inspections cleanly, avoiding detention proceedings whose penalties can far exceed the tax on the goods being carried.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Record keepingEvery return, challan, acknowledgement and working paper archived in an organised folder, retrievable in minutes years later.Documents scattered across email, downloads and old phones; assembling records for a bank or an audit takes days.
Input tax creditPurchase register matched against GSTR-2B each period, with defaulting suppliers chased so eligible credit is actually captured.Credit claimed from books alone; mismatches with GSTR-2B mean lost credit or excess claims that invite departmental queries.
Portal credentials and dataLogins handled by a small engaged team under strict confidentiality, with credentials stored securely and never passed onward.Passwords circulating on chats with freelancers and part-timers, and no accountability for who has accessed your business data.
Refund claimsRFD-01 filed with complete statements and annexures, tracked from ARN to bank credit, with any deficiency memo answered promptly.Incomplete claims bounce back as deficiency memos while the refund sits unclaimed for months and working capital stays blocked.
When a notice arrivesA professional drafts the reply in the department's format and files it within the statutory window, such as thirty days for ASMT-11.You face departmental language alone, and a missed reply deadline can convert a simple query into a demand with penalty.
Time costRoughly an hour a month to send data and approve drafts; the portal work, reconciliation and follow-up are ours.Hours every month lost to portal errors, JSON files, OTP failures and reworking figures — usually on the due date itself.
Law Update

GST Rulings and Notifications That Affect You — relevant to Shenoy Nagar businesses

GST law moves through notifications, circulars and court decisions. These are the ones changing how filings are prepared right now.

Notification

Fortified rice kernel cut to 5 per cent and the pre-packaged definition rewritten

Notification No. 1/2025-Central Tax (Rate), dated 16 January 2025 · 2025-01-16

Following the 55th GST Council meeting, fortified rice kernel classifiable under heading 1904 was placed at five per cent irrespective of end use, removing the earlier distinction based on whether it was supplied for public distribution. The same notification recast the definition of pre-packaged and labelled so that it clearly covers commodities intended for retail sale in packs of not more than twenty-five kilograms or twenty-five litres that must bear declarations under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.

What it means for you: Rice millers and food processors supplying fortified rice kernel charge five per cent from 16 January 2025 whoever the buyer is.

Portal Advisory

Old GST returns are being archived and removed from the portal

GSTN Advisory dated 24 September 2024 — archival of GST returns data older than seven years · 2024-09-24

GSTN advised that return data on the common portal is retained for seven years only, after which it is archived and no longer available for viewing or download. Archival started with the earliest tax periods of 2017-18 and proceeds month by month, so one further month of data drops off the portal every month. Taxpayers were advised to download and preserve their returns and supporting data before the archival date for each period.

How we apply it: Download and store PDF and JSON copies of every GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-9 filed since 2017, because archived returns cannot be retrieved from the portal during an audit or appeal.

Case Law

Supreme Court distinguishes hiring of equipment from transfer of the right to use goods

K.P. Mozika v. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd — Supreme Court, Civil Appeal No. 3548 of 2017, judgment dated 09-01-2024 · 2024-01-09

The Supreme Court examined contracts for supplying cranes, tankers and vehicles to ONGC. It held that a transfer of the right to use goods requires the customer to obtain effective control and legal right to use the goods to the exclusion of the owner. Where the owner retains the operator, control and responsibility, the arrangement is a service contract and not a deemed sale. Sales tax or VAT was therefore not attracted; service tax was.

What to do about it: Chennai transport, crane and equipment hire businesses should draft contracts carefully, since who controls the asset decides whether GST applies as a supply of service or of goods.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

Which GST office handles Shenoy Nagar businesses?
Businesses in Shenoy Nagar (PIN 600030) generally fall under the CGST Chennai North Commissionerate, with state-jurisdiction cases handled by the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department. Your exact division and range can be confirmed from your GSTIN on the GST portal. We regularly appear before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and hearings, so we know the local practice and documentation preferences.
What is the process for GSTR-9 annual return?
The process runs in clear stages: Data compilation; Turnover reconciliation; ITC reconciliation and bifurcation; Draft review and differential tax. A senior consultant reviews your file at each stage rather than passing it to a data-entry desk, and you receive a confirmation with the filed documents once it is complete. You always know which stage your work is at — we update you on WhatsApp instead of leaving you to follow up.
Who has to file the GSTR-9 annual return?
GSTR-9 is the annual return for regular taxpayers, consolidating the outward supplies, input tax credit and tax paid reported through the year's GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings. As per CBIC notifications, filing is optional for taxpayers with aggregate turnover up to Rs.2 crore for the relevant financial year, and mandatory above that. Composition taxpayers file GSTR-4 instead, and e-commerce operators collecting TCS under Section 52 file GSTR-9B. Even where optional, filing GSTR-9 is often advisable because it locks your annual position before any departmental scrutiny. We prepare GSTR-9 for businesses across Shenoy Nagar every year.
What information is needed to prepare my GSTR-9?
The portal auto-drafts GSTR-9 from your filed GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, and provides a system-computed summary along with GSTR-2A/2B data for credit tables. To verify and complete it we need your audited or finalised financial statements, sales and purchase registers, input tax credit ledger, details of RCM payments, HSN-wise summaries, and any DRC-03 payments made during the year. Differences between books and returns must be explained and, where needed, paid. Sharing these by early November gives enough time for a clean filing before 31 December. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 for our standard checklist.
My turnover is Rs.1.2 crore. Is GSTR-9 compulsory for me?
No. For taxpayers with aggregate turnover up to Rs.2 crore, filing GSTR-9 has been made optional through CBIC notifications, and this relaxation has been continued year on year. If you do not file by the due date, the return is deemed furnished. That said, many businesses in Shenoy Nagar still choose to file voluntarily because the exercise reconciles the year's GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, books and GSTR-2B, and surfaces excess credit claims or unreported liability before the department finds them. We offer a reduced fee for voluntary GSTR-9 filings, starting at Rs.4,999.
Can I revise GSTR-9 after filing if I find an error?
No, GSTR-9 cannot be revised once filed. This makes pre-filing reconciliation critical, because the annual return is the department's primary reference during scrutiny and audit. If you discover unpaid liability after filing, it can be paid voluntarily through Form DRC-03 with interest, which mitigates penalty exposure. If credit was short-claimed, the annual return itself cannot fix it, since input tax credit claims are governed by the time limits in Section 16(4). Our process in Shenoy Nagar involves a line-by-line reconciliation and a client sign-off before we submit anything.
What is the last date to file GSTR-9 for a financial year?
GSTR-9 for a financial year is due by 31 December of the following financial year. For example, the annual return for FY 2024-25 is due by 31 December 2025, unless the government extends the date by notification. The reconciliation statement GSTR-9C, where applicable, has the same due date and is filed after GSTR-9. Since annual return preparation involves reconciling twelve months of returns with books, we recommend starting by October rather than December. Businesses in Shenoy Nagar can call +91 - 9600 606 444 to book an early slot with our annual returns team.
What is the late fee for filing GSTR-9 after the due date?
From FY 2022-23 onwards, the late fee is turnover-linked. For turnover up to Rs.5 crore it is Rs.50 per day (Rs.25 CGST plus Rs.25 SGST) capped at 0.04 percent of turnover; for turnover between Rs.5 crore and Rs.20 crore it is Rs.100 per day with the same cap; and above Rs.20 crore it is Rs.200 per day capped at 0.5 percent of turnover. The fee accrues until the date of filing, so delays get expensive for larger businesses. Filing before 31 December avoids the entire cost.
Can my company claim ITC on GST paid to a contractor building our new office?
Generally no. Section 17(5) blocks input tax credit on works contract services and on goods or services used for construction of immovable property on your own account, even when the building is used for business. The exception is plant and machinery, so credit on GST paid for installing machinery, equipment or apparatus fixed to earth remains available. The block does not apply within the construction chain itself: a sub-contractor's works contract service supplied to the main contractor is creditable for the main contractor, since it is used for an onward works contract supply. Classifying civil costs correctly during a project saves disputes at audit.
What exactly does GSTR-9C reconcile?
GSTR-9C reconciles three things between your audited financial statements and your GST returns: gross and taxable turnover, tax paid, and input tax credit. Common reconciling items include unbilled revenue, advances, credit notes, stock transfers between branches, income not liable to GST such as interest, and credit claimed in books but deferred in returns. Every difference must be listed with reasons, and any additional liability discovered is payable through Form DRC-03. A well-prepared GSTR-9C is effectively a self-audit that protects you in later assessments, which is how we approach it for clients in Shenoy Nagar.
Do I have to report HSN codes in my GSTR-1?
Yes. Taxpayers with aggregate turnover up to Rs.5 crore must report a 4-digit HSN summary for B2B supplies in Table 12 of GSTR-1, while those above Rs.5 crore must report 6-digit HSN codes for all supplies. The portal now validates HSN entries against its master list, so wrong or truncated codes can block filing. Getting HSN classification right also determines your tax rate, so it is worth a one-time review of your product list. Our team in Shenoy Nagar maintains a verified HSN master for every client.
How do I document free samples and gifts given to customers?
Goods supplied genuinely free of cost to unrelated persons are not a supply, so no tax invoice is raised and no GST is charged; the movement is covered by a delivery challan marked as free samples. The cost is that input tax credit on those goods must be reversed. Two traps deserve care: gifts to related persons or between distinct GSTINs of the same PAN are taxable under Schedule I even without consideration, and promotional schemes like buy one get one are treated as a single price for two items, taxed normally with credit intact. Structure your Shenoy Nagar promotions with this distinction in mind.
What GST rate applies to cars and two-wheelers now?
Small cars, meaning petrol cars up to 1200cc and diesel cars up to 1500cc with length not exceeding 4 metres, attract 18 percent GST, down sharply from the earlier 28 percent plus cess. Larger cars, SUVs above these specifications, attract the 40 percent rate, but with the compensation cess gone, the overall burden on most of them is still lower than before. Motorcycles up to 350cc are at 18 percent, while those above 350cc attract 40 percent. Electric vehicles continue at a concessional 5 percent. Dealers must also apply these rates to demo vehicle sales.
Why is there GST on an under-construction flat but not on a ready-to-move one?
Construction of an apartment intended for sale is a supply of service only when any part of the consideration is received before the completion certificate is issued or before first occupation. Such under-construction sales attract 1 percent for affordable residential apartments and 5 percent for other residential apartments, both without input tax credit to the builder. Once the completion certificate is issued, sale of the building is neither a supply of goods nor of services under Schedule III, so a ready-to-move flat carries no GST at all, only stamp duty and registration charges. Timing of booking therefore changes the buyer's cost materially.
Is a pure labour contract for building a house exempt from GST?
Two exemptions exist for pure labour contracts, meaning contracts where the contractor supplies only labour and the owner buys all materials. First, construction, erection or installation of original works pertaining to a single residential unit, otherwise than as part of a residential complex, is exempt. Second, pure labour services under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana for beneficiary-led individual house construction are exempt. Outside these, labour contracts are taxable at 18 percent. A mason team building one independent house in Shenoy Nagar on labour-only terms therefore charges no GST, but the same team working on an apartment project must.
What is the difference between the electronic cash ledger and the electronic credit ledger?
The electronic cash ledger reflects actual money you have deposited through challans, plus TDS and TCS credits you have accepted; it can pay tax, interest, penalty, late fee and any other amount. The electronic credit ledger reflects input tax credit claimed through your returns, and it can be used only for paying output tax, never for interest, penalty or late fee. Both are visible under Services, then Ledgers, after login. Refund of an excess cash balance is possible, while credit is refundable only in specified cases such as exports and inverted duty structure.
We sponsored a trade event. Does reverse charge apply to the sponsorship amount?
If your business is a body corporate or partnership firm, sponsorship services received are notified under Section 9(3) and you must pay 18 percent GST under reverse charge, with ITC available since sponsorship is a marketing expense. One recent change matters: with effect from 16 January 2025, sponsorship services provided by a body corporate were moved to forward charge, so if the event organiser billing you is a company, it now charges GST on its invoice and RCM does not apply. Where the provider is a proprietor, trust or society, RCM continues. Verify the organiser's constitution before booking the entry, and raise a self-invoice where the provider is unregistered.
My customer in Mumbai asked me to deliver goods directly to his buyer in Shenoy Nagar. How do I bill this?
This is a bill-to ship-to transaction under Section 10(1)(b). When goods are delivered to a third party on the instruction of your customer, the law deems your customer's principal place of business as the place of supply, not the actual delivery point. So you invoice the Mumbai customer with IGST even though the goods physically moved within Tamil Nadu, and the Mumbai customer raises a second invoice on the ultimate recipient in Shenoy Nagar. Only one e-way bill is needed for the movement, generated by either party with both invoice legs captured. Wrongly billing the delivery-point state is a classic error that misplaces the credit chain entirely.
How long does GSTR-9 annual return take in Shenoy Nagar?
5-7 working days; statutory due date 31 December. That assumes your documents are complete and there is no departmental query. We start the same day we receive your papers and tell you the realistic completion date upfront rather than an optimistic one. Where the GST portal or the officer causes delay — clarifications, physical verification or system issues — we track it daily and keep you informed on WhatsApp.
Are there any hidden charges for GSTR-9 annual return?
No. The fee quoted before we start is the fee you pay. Government fees, portal charges or statutory late fees, where they apply, are separate and disclosed to you in advance with the exact amount. We issue a proper GST invoice for our professional fee. If the scope of work changes — for example, an unexpected notice or additional periods — we tell you the revised fee before doing anything further.
Is there a GST consultant near Shenoy Nagar for gstr 9 filing?
Yes. We serve Shenoy Nagar and the surrounding areas from our office at Porur, Chennai - 600 116, Tamil Nadu, and most annual return work is completed online — you send documents on WhatsApp and we handle the portal work. If you prefer in-person help, we offer doorstep document pickup across Shenoy Nagar and you are welcome to visit our office. Reach us on +91 - 9600 606 444 between 9 AM and 8 PM, Monday to Saturday.
