Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Sri Lakshmi Nagar 3rd Main Road, Alwarthirunagar

Alwarthirunagar's trade sits on Arcot Road and Thiruvalluvar Salai, with textile and furniture showrooms, mobile and electronics stores, restaurants, opticians and diagnostic centres, while the Vembuliamman Koil Street and Vanniyar Street lanes handle provisions, flowers and vegetables. Kamarajar Salai, Munusamy Salai and Rajamannar Salai hold marriage halls, printers and builders, and Chowdhary Nagar and Janaki Nagar carry rented shop-cum-office blocks. Shop rent on reverse charge, composition thresholds and aggregator food sales generate the bulk of local GST queries. We have supported businesses of exactly this profile with GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing across Alwarthirunagar for years, along with clients from Valasaravakkam and Virugambakkam. The engagement is simple: one point of contact, a clear fee, documents over WhatsApp or in person at our Chennai office, and senior review before anything is submitted on the portal. What you get in return is clean filings, archived records and far fewer reasons for the department to write to you.

GST jurisdiction for Alwarthirunagar (PIN 600087): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai South Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Alwarthirunagar before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for Printing and Packaging Units in Alwarthirunagar
Printing turns on who supplies the content: when the customer provides the matter and you supply paper and ink, the transaction is a printing service, but printing on customer-supplied paper is job work with its own rates. The output rates diverge sharply too, with printed books nil-rated, brochures and leaflets at 5 percent, and cartons and corrugated boxes reduced to 5 percent from 22 September 2025. Misclassifying between goods chapters and service codes is the commonest audit finding in this trade. A specialist settles the goods-versus-service call for each product line, applies the right HSN or SAC, and documents job work flows with proper challans.
After GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing is filed, support continues — acknowledgements are archived, upcoming due dates are tracked, and any departmental query on the work is answered, all within fees starting at Rs.749 in Alwarthirunagar.
Why Us

Why Sri Lakshmi Nagar 3rd Main Road, Alwarthirunagar Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

No Handing Off to Untrained Juniors

Your work is executed by trained GST staff working under direct senior supervision, not passed to interns learning on your file. The person preparing your return understands reverse charge, blocked credits and place of supply, because getting these wrong costs you money.

Job Work Movements Tracked Through ITC-04

Goods sent to job workers must move on delivery challans, return within the statutory period, and be reported in ITC-04. We track every outward and return leg for manufacturing clients in Alwarthirunagar, so inputs sent out for processing never quietly convert into a deemed supply carrying tax and interest.

E-Invoice and E-Way Bill Fluency

E-invoicing is mandatory once turnover crosses Rs.5 crore and e-way bills apply to goods movements above Rs.50,000. We set up, train and troubleshoot both systems, so your despatches from Alwarthirunagar are never held up by a compliance gap at the gate.

Refund and Export Experience That Shows

From filing the LUT in RFD-11 at the start of each financial year to preparing RFD-01 refund claims with complete annexures, we know what makes a refund file move. Exporters and inverted-duty businesses come to us specifically for this.

Support in Tamil and English

GST is confusing enough without a language barrier. Our team explains notices, tax positions and filing requirements in plain Tamil or English, whichever you and your staff in Alwarthirunagar are comfortable with, and keeps written communication simple and jargon-free.

Fast, Clean Registrations and Amendments

New GSTIN applications, core field amendments through REG-14, additional places of business — we prepare complete, query-resistant applications the first time. Clean paperwork is the difference between smooth approval and weeks lost answering clarification memos from the department.

How It Works

Our Monthly Returns Process

Monthly data collection

At month end we remind you and collect sales invoices, purchase bills and credit notes in whatever format you maintain, including Excel, Tally exports or scanned copies.

GSTR-1 preparation and filing

We prepare invoice-wise outward supply details, validate GSTINs of your B2B customers, summarise B2C supplies and file GSTR-1 on the portal before the 11th.

ITC reconciliation with GSTR-2B

We download your auto-drafted GSTR-2B, match it against purchase records, and claim only eligible input tax credit so that mismatches do not trigger scrutiny notices later.

Tax computation and confirmation

We compute net tax payable after ITC set-off, share the working with you for approval, and generate the payment challan for any cash liability.

GSTR-3B filing and reporting

After your confirmation and tax payment, we file GSTR-3B before the 20th and send you both filed acknowledgements along with a one-page summary of the month.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

Faster GST Refunds

Complete RFD-01 applications with proper statements and annexures move through the system faster and attract fewer deficiency memos, which means export and inverted-duty refunds reach your bank account sooner.

A Clean GSTIN That Stays Active

Continuous filing protects you from the suspension and cancellation proceedings that hit chronic non-filers, so your registration, e-way bill access and ability to issue tax invoices are never suddenly cut off.

Every Eligible Rupee of ITC Claimed

Systematic GSTR-2B matching and supplier follow-up mean input tax credit that was leaking away under self-filing is captured each month, directly reducing the cash you pay out with every GSTR-3B.

Reduced Dependence on One Employee

When GST knowledge lives inside a single staff member, their resignation becomes a compliance crisis. With our firm as the standing process, your filings continue uninterrupted regardless of internal staff changes.

Audit-Ready Records at All Times

Filed returns, challans, reconciliations and working papers are archived in order from day one. If an audit or departmental verification comes, your file is ready the same week, not assembled in a panic.

Notices Answered Within the Time Limit

Statutory windows such as thirty days for an ASMT-11 reply are tracked from the day a notice arrives, so responses go in on time, complete, and with your best case properly presented.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Record keepingEvery return, challan, acknowledgement and working paper archived in an organised folder, retrievable in minutes years later.Documents scattered across email, downloads and old phones; assembling records for a bank or an audit takes days.
Supplier defaultsSuppliers who stop uploading invoices are identified within the period and pursued before their default becomes your blocked credit.Missing supplier invoices surface only when credit is denied, by which time recovering the amount from the vendor is difficult.
Goods in transitE-way bills generated correctly and matched to invoices, so consignments pass roadside inspections without detention or penalty.A defective or missing e-way bill can mean detention at a checkpoint, with penalties that dwarf the tax on the consignment.
Time costRoughly an hour a month to send data and approve drafts; the portal work, reconciliation and follow-up are ours.Hours every month lost to portal errors, JSON files, OTP failures and reworking figures — usually on the due date itself.
Keeping up with changesRate changes, portal updates and new thresholds such as the Rs.5 crore e-invoice limit are tracked by us and applied to your case proactively.Changes are discovered after the fact — often through a rejected filing, a blocked e-way bill or a departmental letter.
Risk of noticesGSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B reconciled before filing, removing the mismatches that trigger most scrutiny notices.Inconsistent figures across returns quietly build a mismatch history that surfaces later as ASMT-10 scrutiny or a demand notice.

Law Update

GST Rulings and Notifications That Affect You — relevant to Alwarthirunagar businesses

GST law moves through notifications, circulars and court decisions. These are the ones changing how filings are prepared right now.

Circular

Food and drink sold at cinema counters is restaurant service at 5 per cent

Circular No. 201/13/2023-GST dated 01.08.2023 · 2023-08-01

Following the 50th GST Council meeting, CBIC clarified that supply of food and beverages at the snack counters of a cinema hall is taxable as restaurant service at 5 per cent without input tax credit, provided it is supplied independently of the cinema exhibition service. Where a ticket and food are clubbed into a single package, the transaction is a composite supply with exhibition as the principal supply and the ticket rate applies to the whole amount.

What to do about it: Chennai multiplex operators should keep counter sales separately invoiced from tickets, otherwise the entire combo value gets taxed at the higher exhibition rate.

AAR Ruling

Project management consultancy for a public water project held exempt

Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company Ltd - AAR Tamil Nadu, advance ruling reported at 2019 (2) TMI 187 · 2019

The Chennai company provided management consultancy and detailed project report services to the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board for water related projects. It asked whether the service attracted GST. The Authority held that the supply was a pure service with no supply of goods involved, rendered in relation to a function entrusted to a municipality, and was therefore exempt from GST under the entry covering pure services supplied to government and local authorities.

What it means for you: Chennai consultants on government water and civic projects should test the pure services exemption before adding GST to their invoices.

GST Council

Budget hotel rooms taxed and costly hospital rooms brought to 5 per cent

47th GST Council Meeting, Chandigarh — 28 and 29 June 2022 · 2022-06-29

The Council recommended withdrawing the exemption on hotel accommodation priced up to one thousand rupees per unit per day and taxing it at 12 per cent, and taxing room rent charged by a hospital, other than intensive care and similar critical care units, where the charge exceeds five thousand rupees per day per patient, at 5 per cent without input tax credit. It also recommended withdrawing the small-consignment exemptions for goods transport agencies and giving transporters a forward-charge option. The changes took effect from 18 July 2022.

Practical effect: Chennai lodges charging under one thousand rupees a night and hospitals with deluxe rooms above five thousand rupees a day both acquired new GST liabilities from 18 July 2022.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

What documents are required for GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing in Alwarthirunagar?
For GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing you will generally need: Sales invoices or sales register for the month, Purchase invoices or purchase register, Credit notes and debit notes issued during the month, GST portal login credentials, Bank statement for the period, if reconciliation is needed. The exact list depends on your constitution — proprietorship, partnership, LLP or company — and on the specifics of your case. Send what you have on WhatsApp to +91 - 9600 606 444 and we will confirm within the same working day exactly what else is needed, so nothing is rejected later for a missing paper.
Do you provide gst return filing for small businesses and proprietorships in Alwarthirunagar?
Yes. A large share of our clients in Alwarthirunagar are proprietors, small traders, shop owners, freelancers and family businesses rather than large companies. The fee of Rs.749/month and the process are the same regardless of size, and we explain the compliance position in plain language — in Tamil or English — so you understand what is being filed on your behalf and why.
We hire security guards from an agency. Should they charge GST or should we pay it ourselves?
Check the agency's constitution. Since 1 January 2019, security services by way of supply of security personnel provided by any person other than a body corporate to a registered person fall under reverse charge, so your business pays the 18 percent directly and claims credit. If the agency is a body corporate, such as a private limited company, it charges GST under forward charge on its invoice. Recipients registered under the composition scheme are excluded from this reverse charge entry. Businesses in Alwarthirunagar commonly pay agencies' forward-charge invoices while also missing their own RCM cases, so an annual review of security and manpower bills is worthwhile.
How are B2B and B2C invoices reported differently in GST returns?
B2B invoices, meaning supplies to registered buyers, are reported invoice by invoice in Table 4 of GSTR-1 with the buyer's GSTIN, so each one flows into that buyer's GSTR-2B for credit. B2C supplies are split into two streams: large inter-state invoices above the threshold are reported invoice-wise in Table 5, while all remaining B2C sales are reported as consolidated, rate-wise totals per state in Table 7. This is why capturing the buyer's GSTIN correctly at billing matters so much; an invoice keyed as B2C by a cashier gives the registered buyer no credit and triggers correction requests later.
When can I issue a GST credit note against my sales invoice?
Section 34 permits a credit note where the taxable value or tax charged in the invoice exceeds what is actually payable, where the goods are returned by the recipient, or where the goods or services are found deficient. The credit note references the original invoice, and reporting it in your GSTR-1 reduces your output tax liability for that period. It is the correct tool for sales returns, rate errors and quality claims. What a credit note cannot do is cancel an e-invoice after the twenty-four hour IRP window or rewrite history for a different customer; it must trace to a genuine adjustment on an identified invoice.
Our Alwarthirunagar factory hires lorries through a transport agency. Who pays the GST?
Under the reverse charge entry, when a GTA that has not opted for forward charge provides service to specified recipients, the recipient pays the 5 percent tax. Specified recipients include factories, registered persons, body corporates, partnership firms including AOPs, co-operative societies and casual taxable persons. Your factory therefore pays 5 percent in cash through GSTR-3B, reports it in the reverse charge tables, and claims the same amount as input tax credit since freight is a business expense. Confirm from the transporter's invoice or declaration whether it has opted for forward charge, because paying RCM on an FCM invoice creates double taxation. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 if your freight entries need a review.
How does a GTA opt for forward charge, and by when must it be done?
The option is exercised by filing the Annexure V declaration on the GST portal. For an existing GTA, the window for a financial year runs from 1 January to 31 March of the preceding financial year, so the choice for the coming year must be locked in by 31 March. A newly registered GTA must file the declaration within forty-five days of applying for registration or one month from the date of obtaining registration, whichever is later. Once exercised, the option continues for future years automatically unless the GTA files Annexure VI to revert to reverse charge. Missing the window means remaining under the default reverse charge mechanism for the whole year.
How exactly do I pay RCM in my return and claim it back as credit?
Report the taxable value and tax in Table 3.1(d) of GSTR-3B; this liability must be discharged in cash through the electronic cash ledger, because input tax credit cannot be used to pay reverse charge dues. In the same return, claim the amount as ITC in Table 4(A)(2) or 4(A)(3), so the net impact is usually nil. RCM invoices from registered suppliers like GTAs appear in GSTR-2B, but credit for unregistered-supplier RCM rests on your self-invoice, and Circular 211/5/2024 confirms the Section 16(4) deadline runs from the year of that self-invoice. Businesses in Alwarthirunagar that skip the 3.1(d) reporting but claim the credit invite automatic mismatch flags.
I received a debit note from a supplier for an old invoice. Which year's ITC deadline applies?
The deadline is counted from the date of the debit note, not the original invoice. After the Finance Act 2020 delinked debit notes from their underlying invoices, ITC on a debit note can be claimed up to 30 November following the end of the financial year in which the debit note itself was issued. So a debit note dated June 2025 against an invoice of January 2024 remains claimable until 30 November 2026. This delinking rescues many price-escalation and rate-difference credits that would otherwise appear time-barred, and it is worth checking before writing off any debit note credit as lost.
We distribute free samples and run buy-one-get-one offers. How is ITC treated on these?
The two are treated very differently. Goods disposed of as gifts or free samples attract the block under Section 17(5)(h), so ITC on inputs used for genuinely free samples must be reversed. However, CBIC Circular 92/11/2019 clarifies that buy-one-get-one offers are not free supplies; they are effectively two goods sold for a single price, tax is charged on that price, and full ITC remains available. Trade discounts recorded in the invoice also do not disturb credit. Pharmaceutical distributors and FMCG dealers in Alwarthirunagar should therefore document promotional schemes carefully, because the same physical giveaway can be creditable or blocked depending on how the offer is structured.
We are constructing our own office building in Alwarthirunagar. Can we claim ITC on the materials and contractor bills?
No. Section 17(5)(c) and (d) block credit on works contract services and on goods or services used for construction of immovable property on your own account, even when the building is used for business. The exception is plant and machinery, which covers apparatus and equipment fixed to earth by foundation or structural support, but expressly excludes land, buildings, telecom towers and pipelines laid outside the factory. Note that the Finance Act 2025 retrospectively substituted the phrase plant or machinery with plant and machinery from 1 July 2017, neutralising the wider reading taken in the Safari Retreats ruling. Structure your capitalisation records to separate plant from civil work.
Which everyday goods now attract 5 percent GST?
The 5 percent slab now covers most household essentials that earlier fell in the 12 or 18 percent brackets: soaps, shampoos, toothpaste and toothbrushes, hair oil, bicycles, kitchen utensils and tableware. Packaged foods such as butter, ghee, cheese, namkeens, sauces, pasta, biscuits and chocolates are also at 5 percent, as are most medicines, medical devices and agricultural machinery. Apparel and footwear priced up to Rs.2,500 per piece attract 5 percent as well. Retailers in Alwarthirunagar should update billing software rate masters item by item rather than assuming old rates continue.
We sponsored a trade event. Does reverse charge apply to the sponsorship amount?
If your business is a body corporate or partnership firm, sponsorship services received are notified under Section 9(3) and you must pay 18 percent GST under reverse charge, with ITC available since sponsorship is a marketing expense. One recent change matters: with effect from 16 January 2025, sponsorship services provided by a body corporate were moved to forward charge, so if the event organiser billing you is a company, it now charges GST on its invoice and RCM does not apply. Where the provider is a proprietor, trust or society, RCM continues. Verify the organiser's constitution before booking the entry, and raise a self-invoice where the provider is unregistered.
How do I track the status of a grievance ticket or any ARN I have on the GST portal?
For grievance tickets, open selfservice.gstsystem.in and use Check Status by entering the ticket reference number; the screen shows whether it is open, under processing or resolved, with the resolution comments. For applications filed on the main portal, log in and use Services, then Track Application Status, choosing the module and entering the ARN, or open My Applications to see every application with its case detail folder, notices and replies in one place. Diarise every ARN the day it is generated, because reply windows run from portal timestamps. ChennaiGST maintains an ARN tracker for every client engagement.
Is there really a penalty for not displaying my GST number at my shop?
Yes. Rule 18 of the CGST Rules requires every registered person to display the registration certificate in a prominent location at the principal place of business and every additional place, and to display the GSTIN on the name board at the entry of each such premises. There is no separate penalty provision for this lapse, so officers invoke the general penalty under Section 125, which can extend to Rs.25,000 under CGST with a matching state penalty. Inspection teams visiting Alwarthirunagar markets routinely check name boards first, so a few hundred rupees of signage is the cheapest compliance in the entire GST law.
Can you give me a simple GST due-date calendar for my business?
For monthly filers: GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of the next month. Under QRMP: optional IFF by the 13th of the next month, PMT-06 payment by the 25th, quarterly GSTR-1 by the 13th and GSTR-3B by the 22nd (Tamil Nadu) after the quarter. Composition dealers pay via CMP-08 by the 18th after each quarter and file GSTR-4 annually by 30 June. GSTR-7 and GSTR-8 are due on the 10th, and GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C by 31 December. Clients in Alwarthirunagar receive our reminder messages before every date.
What are the common types of GST notices a business can receive?
The frequent ones are: REG-03 seeking clarification on a registration application; GSTR-3A for non-filing of returns; ASMT-10 pointing out discrepancies found on scrutiny of returns; DRC-01A intimating an ascertained tax liability before formal proceedings; DRC-01, the show cause notice under Section 73 or 74; ADT-01 intimating a departmental audit; REG-17 proposing cancellation of registration; RFD-08 proposing rejection of a refund claim; and summons under Section 70. Each has its own reply form and deadline, ranging from seven working days to thirty days, so identifying the notice type correctly is the first step in responding. When in doubt, call +91 - 9600 606 444.
We pay for foreign software subscriptions and overseas consultants. Is GST payable in India?
Yes. Import of services, meaning services from a supplier located outside India received by a person in India for business, attracts IGST under reverse charge in the recipient's hands, payable in cash and claimable as ITC if eligible. This catches cloud software, foreign professional fees, overseas advertising and licence fees. Two nuances matter: services from a related foreign party, such as your parent company, are taxable even without consideration under Schedule I, and OIDAR services supplied to unregistered consumers are taxed in the foreign supplier's own hands, not under RCM. Startups and IT firms in Alwarthirunagar paying by card frequently miss these entries; reconcile foreign remittances against RCM paid annually.
Which GST office handles Alwarthirunagar businesses?

Your exact division and range can be confirmed from your GSTIN on the GST portal.
