Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Anna Main Road, Kodambakkam

Kodambakkam gave Kollywood its name, and film production houses, editing suites and event managers still work off Arcot Road and Rangarajapuram Main Road alongside dense neighbourhood retail. Media businesses here struggle with GST classification of production services, reverse charge on copyright payments to composers and artists, and input tax credit scattered across multi-location shoots and vendor invoices. That commercial character shapes the GST questions we see from Kodambakkam every week — registrations, monthly returns, credit mismatches and departmental queries. We deliver GST Notice Reply for businesses in Kodambakkam, and clients also reach us from T. Nagar and Vadapalani nearby. Documents move over WhatsApp, drafts are approved before filing, and a senior consultant reviews every submission, so distance from our office never dilutes the quality of the work.

GST jurisdiction for Kodambakkam (PIN 600024): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai South Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Kodambakkam before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for Professional Services Firms in Kodambakkam
Professional firms bill at 18 percent, but the mechanics differ by profession: services of advocates to business entities are taxed in the client's hands under reverse charge, while chartered accountants, company secretaries and architects charge tax on their own invoices. Fees received in advance are taxable on receipt, and retainers must be invoiced within the time limits of Section 31(2). Amounts recovered from clients as a pure agent, such as government fees paid on their behalf, stay outside taxable value only if every condition of Rule 33 is met and documented. A specialist sets up retainer invoicing, pure agent documentation and branch cross-charges correctly; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to discuss your firm.
After GST Notice Reply is filed, support continues — acknowledgements are archived, upcoming due dates are tracked, and any departmental query on the work is answered, all within fees starting at Rs.2,999 in Kodambakkam.
Why Us

Why Anna Main Road, Kodambakkam Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

✓

Complete Documentation, Properly Archived

Every acknowledgement, challan, computation sheet and filed return is saved and shared with you in an organised folder. When a bank, buyer or GST officer asks for a document from two years ago, it reaches you the same day without any scrambling.

✓

Fast, Clean Registrations and Amendments

New GSTIN applications, core field amendments through REG-14, additional places of business — we prepare complete, query-resistant applications the first time. Clean paperwork is the difference between smooth approval and weeks lost answering clarification memos from the department.

✓

Composition Scheme Compliance Without Slips

Composition dealers have their own rulebook — CMP-08 every quarter, GSTR-4 annually by 30 June, bills of supply instead of tax invoices, and a turnover ceiling that must be watched. We handle each of these correctly so the scheme's simplicity never turns into a violation.

✓

No Handing Off to Untrained Juniors

Your work is executed by trained GST staff working under direct senior supervision, not passed to interns learning on your file. The person preparing your return understands reverse charge, blocked credits and place of supply, because getting these wrong costs you money.

✓

Advisory, Not Just Data Entry

We tell you when the composition scheme stops making sense, when QRMP suits your cash flow, and when a supplier's non-compliance is quietly costing you credit. Filing is the minimum; helping you make better GST decisions is the actual job.

✓

Ledger Housekeeping on the Portal

Your cash ledger, credit ledger and liability register are reviewed regularly, not just at filing time. Excess balances are flagged for use or refund, and where a genuine slip surfaces, a voluntary payment through DRC-03 settles it before it can mature into a notice.

How It Works

Our Notice Reply Process

Notice study

We read the notice line by line, identify the section invoked, the periods covered, the exact information sought and the deadline for response.

Data reconciliation

The figures alleged in the notice are reconciled against your filed returns, GSTR-2B and books, so the reply is grounded in verifiable numbers rather than assertions.

Reply drafting

We draft a professional, point-wise reply addressing every allegation, attaching reconciliations, invoices and legal support, and share the draft with you for approval.

Filing and payment

The approved reply is filed on the portal within the deadline. Where a small genuine liability exists, we advise payment through DRC-03 to limit interest and penalty.

Closure tracking

We monitor the portal for the officer's response, attend to any further queries or hearing dates, and pursue the matter until a closure or order is received.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

★

Tax Paid Under the Right Head

Getting IGST versus CGST and SGST right at the invoice stage spares you the painful cycle of paying the correct head again and pursuing a refund of the amount paid under the wrong one.

★

Clarity on What You Actually Owe

Each period you receive a simple computation showing output tax, credit utilised and net cash payable, so GST becomes a number you understand and question rather than a figure you accept blindly.

★

Confidence During Officer Interactions

When a query or verification comes, you respond through a professional who deals with the department regularly, in the department's own language and format, instead of facing an officer's letter alone.

★

The Lowest Tax Position the Law Allows

Your scheme choice — regular, composition or QRMP — is re-examined as turnover and margins change, so you are always paying under the structure that legitimately costs your business the least.

★

Better Cash Flow Planning

You know your expected GST outflow days before the 20th, not on the night of filing. That advance visibility lets you plan payments, collections and bank balances instead of scrambling for funds at the deadline.

★

Fewer Errors at the Billing Counter

Your billing staff are guided on invoice fields, rates and series discipline, so mistakes are prevented where they originate — at the counter — instead of being repaired later in the returns.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Due-date trackingA maintained compliance calendar with internal cut-offs days before the 11th and the 20th; we chase you for data, not the other way around.Deadlines remembered from memory or phone alarms; one busy week and the return slips past the due date.
Risk of noticesGSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B reconciled before filing, removing the mismatches that trigger most scrutiny notices.Inconsistent figures across returns quietly build a mismatch history that surfaces later as ASMT-10 scrutiny or a demand notice.
Portal credentials and dataLogins handled by a small engaged team under strict confidentiality, with credentials stored securely and never passed onward.Passwords circulating on chats with freelancers and part-timers, and no accountability for who has accessed your business data.
Refund claimsRFD-01 filed with complete statements and annexures, tracked from ARN to bank credit, with any deficiency memo answered promptly.Incomplete claims bounce back as deficiency memos while the refund sits unclaimed for months and working capital stays blocked.
Supplier defaultsSuppliers who stop uploading invoices are identified within the period and pursued before their default becomes your blocked credit.Missing supplier invoices surface only when credit is denied, by which time recovering the amount from the vendor is difficult.
When a notice arrivesA professional drafts the reply in the department's format and files it within the statutory window, such as thirty days for ASMT-11.You face departmental language alone, and a missed reply deadline can convert a simple query into a demand with penalty.

AAR Ruling

Agricultural seedling trays are plastic articles taxable at 18 percent

Saro Enterprises - AAR Tamil Nadu (2018), upheld by AAAR Tamil Nadu, order dated 6 February 2019 · 2018

The applicant made polypropylene and recycled plastic trays used by farmers to raise paddy and vegetable seedlings, and argued that they were agricultural implements. The Authority held that the trays are other articles of plastic under heading 3926 90 99 and are taxable at 9 percent central tax and 9 percent State tax. Use in agriculture does not by itself bring a product within the exempt agricultural implements entry, and the material and the tariff description prevail over the end use.

Practical effect: Chennai suppliers to the farm sector cannot assume exemption merely because the buyer uses the product in agriculture.

Case Law

Supreme Court holds intent to evade tax is essential for the extended limitation period

Cosmic Dye Chemical v. Collector of Central Excise, Bombay — Supreme Court, (1995) 6 SCC 117, judgment dated 06-09-1994 · 1994-09-06

The Supreme Court held that misstatement or suppression of facts must be wilful and coupled with an intent to evade payment of duty before the extended period of limitation can be invoked. An innocent or inadvertent error, even if it results in short payment, does not attract the extended period. The department must establish the mental element, and it cannot be presumed from the mere existence of a short payment.

What it means for you: In a Chennai GST dispute, the burden lies on the department to prove intent to evade before it can go beyond the normal three-year period.

Circular

ITC time limit for reverse charge supplies runs from the year of self-invoice

Circular No. 211/5/2024-GST · 2024-06-26

For supplies received from unregistered persons that are taxable under reverse charge, CBIC clarified that the Section 16(4) time limit for availing input tax credit is reckoned from the financial year in which the recipient issues the self-invoice, not the year of the supply itself. Where the self-invoice is issued belatedly, the recipient may still claim credit but is liable to interest for delayed tax payment and possible penal action for the documentation delay.

Why this matters: Missed reverse-charge liabilities of earlier years can still be regularised with credit intact by issuing the self-invoice now and paying tax with interest.

Free Tool

Already Holding the Notice? Read It in About a Minute

Upload the PDF to our free GST Notice Analyser. It identifies which of 34 notice types you have, pulls out the DIN, GSTIN and tax period, reads the reply date printed on the notice and tells you plainly whether that date has already passed — along with the documents and reconciliations you will need. No payment, no account. If the notice does not state a date we can read, it says so rather than guessing one for you.

Analyse my notice — free WhatsApp it to a consultant

The analyser reports what your notice says and the statutory position for that form. It is not a substitute for a consultant reading your actual records, and a reply should be reviewed before you file it.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

Is there a GST consultant near Kodambakkam for gst notice reply?
Yes. We serve Kodambakkam and the surrounding areas from our office at Porur, Chennai - 600 116, Tamil Nadu, and most notice reply work is completed online — you send documents on WhatsApp and we handle the portal work. If you prefer in-person help, we offer doorstep document pickup across Kodambakkam and you are welcome to visit our office. Reach us on +91 - 9600 606 444 between 9 AM and 8 PM, Monday to Saturday.
How much does GST notice reply cost in Kodambakkam?
Our fee for GST notice reply in Kodambakkam starts at Rs.2,999 and is quoted in full before we begin — there are no hidden charges added later. The fee covers professional work end to end: document review, preparation, filing and follow-up until completion. Government fees or portal charges, where applicable, are separate and always shown to you upfront. For an exact quote based on your turnover and business type, call +91 - 9600 606 444 and a consultant will confirm it on the call.
What penalties does Section 122 of the CGST Act prescribe, and for which offences?
Section 122(1) lists twenty-one offences, including supplying without an invoice, issuing an invoice without supply, collecting tax but not depositing it beyond three months, failing to deduct or collect TDS or TCS, wrongly availing input tax credit and failing to register when liable. The penalty is Rs.10,000 or an amount equivalent to the tax evaded or credit wrongly taken, whichever is higher. For short payment of tax, Section 122(2) prescribes 10 percent of the tax or Rs.10,000, whichever is higher, in non-fraud cases, and a penalty equal to the tax or Rs.10,000, whichever is higher, where fraud is involved. An equal penalty applies under the SGST Act.
Can a person who never filed the returns still be penalised in a fake invoice case?
Yes. Section 122(1A) targets the person at whose instance fake transactions are conducted and who retains the benefit, even if the invoices were issued through some other entity. Where the offence involves supplying without an invoice, issuing invoices without supply, or availing or passing on credit from such invoices, the beneficiary faces a penalty equal to the tax evaded or the credit availed or passed on. This is how masterminds behind billing rackets are penalised alongside the front companies. If your GSTIN in Kodambakkam has been misused by a third party, respond to any such notice with evidence immediately; call +91 - 9600 606 444.
My GST registration was rejected in REG-05 after a clarification notice. Can I apply again?
Yes. A rejection order in Form REG-05 does not bar you from applying afresh. You can file a new registration application after curing the defects the officer pointed out, such as an incomplete rental agreement, mismatched address proof or missing authorisation letter. Alternatively, if you believe the rejection was wrong, you can challenge the order by filing an appeal in Form APL-01 within three months. For most small businesses a corrected fresh application is faster than an appeal. ChennaiGST reviews the rejection reasons first and then recommends the quicker route for your case.
How do I get a provisional attachment on my property or bank account lifted quickly?
Rule 159(5) gives you the immediate remedy: file an objection before the Commissioner, within seven days of the attachment, contending that the property was not liable to attachment, and seek a personal hearing. If satisfied, the Commissioner releases the property through Form DRC-23. In practice, offering less disruptive security, demonstrating that the attachment cripples salaries and statutory payments, or showing that the underlying proceedings do not fall within Section 83 are effective grounds. Where the Commissioner refuses, a writ petition before the Madras High Court is the established route for Kodambakkam businesses, since no appeal is provided against DRC-22. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 the day the bank informs you.
How do I check whether any GST notices have been issued to my business?
Log in to gst.gov.in and go to Services, then User Services, then View Notices and Orders for registration-related communications. Crucially, adjudication notices such as ASMT-10, DRC-01A and DRC-01 appear under a separate tab called View Additional Notices and Orders, which many taxpayers never open. Also verify that the email and mobile number on your registration are current, since the portal sends alerts there. We advise Kodambakkam businesses to check both tabs at least once a month, because a reply deadline starts running from the date of issue on the portal, not from when you happen to see it.
How much does it cost to get a GST notice reply drafted in Kodambakkam?
Professional fees depend on the type of notice and the stakes involved. A simple clarification or return-default reply costs far less than a detailed defence to a show cause notice with multiple issues. At ChennaiGST, notice reply services start at Rs.2,999, which covers studying the notice, reconciling your data, drafting a reasoned reply with supporting annexures and filing it on the GST portal. Hearing representation is scoped separately where required. We serve businesses across Kodambakkam and nearby localities, and the first assessment of your notice is done before we quote. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 with a copy of the notice for a fixed quote.
Can I use my input tax credit balance to pay a DRC-03 liability?
Partly. The tax component of a DRC-03 payment can be settled from the electronic credit ledger, subject to the usual cross-utilisation rules between IGST, CGST and SGST. However, interest, penalty and late fee can never be paid from credit; those components must come from the electronic cash ledger, so you may need to deposit a challan first. The portal shows both ledger balances on the payment screen and lets you split the utilisation. Planning this split correctly avoids depositing cash unnecessarily when credit is lying idle, which is a routine saving we make for clients every month.
What is the difference between a Section 73 and a Section 74 notice?
Section 73 covers short payment of tax or wrong ITC without fraud, while Section 74 applies where the department alleges fraud, wilful misstatement or suppression of facts to evade tax. The stakes differ sharply. Under Section 73 the order must be passed within three years from the annual return due date and the penalty is 10 percent of the tax or Rs.10,000, whichever is higher, with no penalty if you pay before the notice. Under Section 74 the limit is five years and penalty can equal 100 percent of the tax. Contesting a wrong invocation of Section 74 is often the first line of defence.
What are the exact steps to file a DRC-03 voluntary payment on the GST portal?
Log in and go to Services, then User Services, then My Applications, choose Intimation of Voluntary Payment DRC-03 and click New Application. Select the cause of payment, such as voluntary, show cause notice, audit or annual return, pick the section and financial year, and enter the tax, interest and penalty amounts head-wise under IGST, CGST and SGST. A saved draft remains available for fifteen days. Offset the amounts from your ledgers, sign with DSC or EVC, and download the ARN acknowledgement. Our Kodambakkam office files DRC-03 the same day for clients; call +91 - 9600 606 444.
What GST rate applies to a goods transport agency: 5 percent or 18 percent?
Both exist, depending on the option exercised. The default position is 5 percent payable by the specified recipient under reverse charge, with no input tax credit to the GTA. Alternatively, a GTA may opt to pay tax itself under forward charge, either at 5 percent without input tax credit or at the higher rate with full credit, which was revised from 12 percent to 18 percent with effect from 22 September 2025. The with-credit option suits transporters with large spends on vehicles and tyres. Once the forward charge option is exercised for a year, it applies to all consignments of that year.
What details must a GST tax invoice compulsorily contain?
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules prescribes the mandatory contents: your name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive serial number not exceeding sixteen characters, unique for the financial year; the date of issue; the recipient's name, address and GSTIN if registered; the HSN or SAC code; description, quantity and unit; total and taxable value; any discount; the rate and amount of CGST, SGST or IGST shown separately; place of supply with the state name for inter-state supplies; a declaration where tax is payable on reverse charge; and signature or digital signature of the supplier. Missing fields make the invoice defective and can jeopardise your buyer's credit.
Which everyday goods now attract 5 percent GST?
The 5 percent slab now covers most household essentials that earlier fell in the 12 or 18 percent brackets: soaps, shampoos, toothpaste and toothbrushes, hair oil, bicycles, kitchen utensils and tableware. Packaged foods such as butter, ghee, cheese, namkeens, sauces, pasta, biscuits and chocolates are also at 5 percent, as are most medicines, medical devices and agricultural machinery. Apparel and footwear priced up to Rs.2,500 per piece attract 5 percent as well. Retailers in Kodambakkam should update billing software rate masters item by item rather than assuming old rates continue.
Is GST still charged on life and health insurance premiums?
No. With effect from 22 September 2025, premiums on all individual life insurance policies, including term plans, endowment plans and ULIPs, and all individual health insurance policies, including family floater and senior citizen plans, are exempt from GST. Reinsurance of these policies is also exempt. Earlier these premiums bore 18 percent tax. Note that the exemption applies to policies taken by individuals; certain group covers procured by businesses can still attract GST, and insurers can no longer claim input credit attributable to exempt policies. Policyholders should see the benefit directly in renewal notices.
My shop's landlord in Kodambakkam is not GST registered. Do I pay GST on the rent myself?
Yes, if you are registered. With effect from 10 October 2024, renting of any immovable property other than a residential dwelling by an unregistered person to a registered person was notified under reverse charge, so a registered tenant must pay 18 percent on the rent in cash through GSTR-3B and can claim ITC subject to the usual conditions. Composition taxpayers were subsequently excluded from this entry with effect from 16 January 2025. You must also raise a monthly self-invoice since the landlord is unregistered. Many shop and godown tenants in Kodambakkam remain unaware of this recent entry; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to regularise past months.
What are the common types of GST notices a business can receive?
The frequent ones are: REG-03 seeking clarification on a registration application; GSTR-3A for non-filing of returns; ASMT-10 pointing out discrepancies found on scrutiny of returns; DRC-01A intimating an ascertained tax liability before formal proceedings; DRC-01, the show cause notice under Section 73 or 74; ADT-01 intimating a departmental audit; REG-17 proposing cancellation of registration; RFD-08 proposing rejection of a refund claim; and summons under Section 70. Each has its own reply form and deadline, ranging from seven working days to thirty days, so identifying the notice type correctly is the first step in responding. When in doubt, call +91 - 9600 606 444.
What is the GST rate for restaurants and food delivery now?
Standalone restaurants, eateries and cloud kitchens charge 5 percent GST without input tax credit. Restaurants located in hotels where the room tariff exceeds Rs.7,500 per day fall in the specified premises category and charge 18 percent with input tax credit. Food ordered through e-commerce operators such as Swiggy and Zomato is taxed at 5 percent, with the platform liable to pay the tax on restaurant services supplied through it. A restaurant in Kodambakkam paying 5 percent must remember that GST on its rent, gas and equipment purchases becomes a cost, since credit is barred.
Do you provide gst notice reply for small businesses and proprietorships in Kodambakkam?
Yes. A large share of our clients in Kodambakkam are proprietors, small traders, shop owners, freelancers and family businesses rather than large companies. The fee of Rs.2,999 and the process are the same regardless of size, and we explain the compliance position in plain language — in Tamil or English — so you understand what is being filed on your behalf and why.
Are there any hidden charges for GST notice reply?
No. The fee quoted before we start is the fee you pay. Government fees, portal charges or statutory late fees, where they apply, are separate and disclosed to you in advance with the exact amount. We issue a proper GST invoice for our professional fee. If the scope of work changes — for example, an unexpected notice or additional periods — we tell you the revised fee before doing anything further.
How long does GST notice reply take in Kodambakkam?
Draft reply in 3-5 working days. That assumes your documents are complete and there is no departmental query. We start the same day we receive your papers and tell you the realistic completion date upfront rather than an optimistic one. Where the GST portal or the officer causes delay — clarifications, physical verification or system issues — we track it daily and keep you informed on WhatsApp.
