Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Ashok Path, St. Thomas Mount

St. Thomas Mount combines the cantonment economy around Butt Road with airport-linked logistics, guest houses and retail on GST Road. Contractors and suppliers billing the Cantonment Board and defence establishments face 2 per cent GST TDS, which deductors report in GSTR-7 by the 10th, so vendors must accept and reconcile those credits monthly to avoid cash-flow leakage. When businesses of this kind evaluate GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing, the real question is not price alone but who answers when something goes wrong. We serve St. Thomas Mount, Alandur and Guindy on a standing commitment: responses within the same working day, senior scrutiny before every submission, and continued support if the department ever writes back on work carrying our preparation.

GST jurisdiction for St. Thomas Mount (PIN 600016): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai South Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from St. Thomas Mount before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for Hotels and Lodges in St. Thomas Mount
From 22 September 2025, hotel rooms priced up to Rs.7,500 per night attract 5 percent without input credit, and rooms above that attract 18 percent with credit, ending the old middle slab. A property may also opt to be a specified premises by filing a declaration, which lets its restaurant charge 18 percent with full credit instead of the default 5 percent without credit. Banquets combining hall, food and decor need composite supply analysis, and cancellation or no-show charges are themselves taxable. A specialist prices room categories sensibly around the threshold, files the specified-premises declaration where credit recovery justifies it, and keeps tariff-linked billing accurate.
To get GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing in St. Thomas Mount, share your documents by WhatsApp or visit the office, approve the prepared draft, and the filing is completed on the GST portal from Rs.749.
Why Us

Why Ashok Path, St. Thomas Mount Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

Job Work Movements Tracked Through ITC-04

Goods sent to job workers must move on delivery challans, return within the statutory period, and be reported in ITC-04. We track every outward and return leg for manufacturing clients in St. Thomas Mount, so inputs sent out for processing never quietly convert into a deemed supply carrying tax and interest.

Waiver and Amnesty Windows Applied for You

Whenever the GST Council notifies a late-fee waiver or an amnesty window for pending returns or old demands, we check every client's history against it and act within the deadline. Relief that businesses in St. Thomas Mount would otherwise read about after it lapsed reaches our clients in time.

One Dedicated Point of Contact

You deal with one accountable person who knows your business, your turnover pattern and your filing history. No repeating your story to a new voice every month, and no file falling between two desks when a deadline is approaching.

Composition Scheme Compliance Without Slips

Composition dealers have their own rulebook — CMP-08 every quarter, GSTR-4 annually by 30 June, bills of supply instead of tax invoices, and a turnover ceiling that must be watched. We handle each of these correctly so the scheme's simplicity never turns into a violation.

GST Portal Expertise, Including the Difficult Days

OTP failures, DSC errors, stuck submissions on due-date evenings — we deal with the GST portal daily and know the workarounds. When the site misbehaves on the 20th, our team keeps retrying and escalating so your return still goes through.

Experience Across Trades and Sectors

Traders, manufacturers, contractors, e-commerce sellers, professionals and service exporters — we have handled GST for all of them. Whatever mix of goods and services your St. Thomas Mount business supplies, the rate, classification and place-of-supply questions have almost certainly crossed our desk before.

How It Works

Our Monthly Returns Process

Monthly data collection

At month end we remind you and collect sales invoices, purchase bills and credit notes in whatever format you maintain, including Excel, Tally exports or scanned copies.

GSTR-1 preparation and filing

We prepare invoice-wise outward supply details, validate GSTINs of your B2B customers, summarise B2C supplies and file GSTR-1 on the portal before the 11th.

ITC reconciliation with GSTR-2B

We download your auto-drafted GSTR-2B, match it against purchase records, and claim only eligible input tax credit so that mismatches do not trigger scrutiny notices later.

Tax computation and confirmation

We compute net tax payable after ITC set-off, share the working with you for approval, and generate the payment challan for any cash liability.

GSTR-3B filing and reporting

After your confirmation and tax payment, we file GSTR-3B before the 20th and send you both filed acknowledgements along with a one-page summary of the month.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

Supplier Risk Caught Early

We spot suppliers who stop uploading invoices or filing returns and alert you before their default becomes your blocked credit, letting you recover amounts or switch vendors while the exposure is still small.

Lower Total Cost of Compliance

A fixed professional fee is almost always cheaper than the combination of late fees, interest, lost credit and staff hours that informal, last-minute compliance quietly accumulates over a year.

Growth Without Compliance Anxiety

New branches, new product lines and interstate sales all carry GST consequences. With standing professional support, you expand knowing registrations, invoicing and returns will keep pace with the business.

Tax Paid Under the Right Head

Getting IGST versus CGST and SGST right at the invoice stage spares you the painful cycle of paying the correct head again and pursuing a refund of the amount paid under the wrong one.

Stronger Standing with Corporate Buyers

Large buyers check vendor GST compliance before releasing payments and renewing contracts. A clean filing record with timely GSTR-1 uploads keeps your invoices reflecting in their GSTR-2B and your payments unblocked.

Slips Settled Before They Become Notices

Where a genuine error is found in a past period, voluntary payment through DRC-03 before any notice issues closes the matter at minimal cost, instead of letting it ripen into a demand with penalty.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Record keepingEvery return, challan, acknowledgement and working paper archived in an organised folder, retrievable in minutes years later.Documents scattered across email, downloads and old phones; assembling records for a bank or an audit takes days.
Risk of noticesGSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B reconciled before filing, removing the mismatches that trigger most scrutiny notices.Inconsistent figures across returns quietly build a mismatch history that surfaces later as ASMT-10 scrutiny or a demand notice.
Annual return preparationMonthly reconciliations roll naturally into GSTR-9, filed comfortably before 31 December with figures already agreed through the year.Twelve months of unmatched data reconstructed in December, with differences discovered too late to be corrected cleanly.
Registration and amendmentsQuery-resistant applications prepared correctly the first time, with supporting documents matched to what proper officers actually verify.Repeated clarification memos and resubmissions, with weeks lost because a rent agreement or premises photograph did not meet expectations.
Portal credentials and dataLogins handled by a small engaged team under strict confidentiality, with credentials stored securely and never passed onward.Passwords circulating on chats with freelancers and part-timers, and no accountability for who has accessed your business data.
Time costRoughly an hour a month to send data and approve drafts; the portal work, reconciliation and follow-up are ours.Hours every month lost to portal errors, JSON files, OTP failures and reworking figures — usually on the due date itself.

AAR Ruling

Electronic toys attract 18 percent while other toys stay at 12 percent

Navbharat Imports - AAR Tamil Nadu, Advance Ruling No. 35/AAR/2021, dated 30 September 2021 · 2021-09-30

The importer sold a range of children's toys, some containing electronic circuits and some working purely mechanically. It asked for the correct rate on each. The Authority held that toys containing electronic components attract 18 percent under the residual entry for electronic toys, irrespective of how those components are used, so children's scooters and smart tricycles with lights and music are taxed at 18 percent, while toys that work without electronics remain at 12 percent.

What it means for you: Chennai toy traders must classify item by item, because a single electronic component moves a product from 12 to 18 percent.

Notification

Reverse charge on renting of motor vehicles to body corporates

Notification No. 22/2019-Central Tax (Rate) dated 30.09.2019 · 2019-09-30

This notification added renting of a motor vehicle designed to carry passengers, where the cost of fuel is included in the consideration, to the services reverse charge list with effect from 1 October 2019. The liability falls on a body corporate recipient located in the taxable territory where the supplier is not a body corporate. The entry was refined at the end of 2019 to make clear that it applies only where the supplier does not opt to charge 12 per cent with input tax credit.

Practical effect: A Chennai company hiring cars or staff buses from an individual or firm operator must pay 5 per cent under reverse charge unless the operator bills at 12 per cent.

Circular

Online service providers must record the customer's State on every invoice

Circular No. 242/36/2024-GST · 2024-12-31

For online services supplied to unregistered persons, including OIDAR services, online gaming and subscriptions, CBIC clarified that the supplier must record the recipient's State on the tax invoice, which is then deemed the address on record for determining place of supply under Section 12(2)(b). Failure to collect and record the State means incorrect place of supply, wrong apportionment of tax between States, and exposure to penal action under Section 122(3)(e).

What to do about it: Any business selling digital services or subscriptions to consumers must capture the customer's State at checkout and print it on invoices, or face penalties and tax reallocation disputes.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

Do you provide GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing for businesses on Ashok Path?
Yes. We serve businesses on and around Ashok Path in St. Thomas Mount — shops, offices, godowns and home-run businesses alike. Document pickup can be arranged at your premises, or you can send everything on WhatsApp and complete monthly returns without leaving your counter. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 and mention your location; a consultant will confirm the fee and timeline immediately.
Are there any hidden charges for GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing?
No. The fee quoted before we start is the fee you pay. Government fees, portal charges or statutory late fees, where they apply, are separate and disclosed to you in advance with the exact amount. We issue a proper GST invoice for our professional fee. If the scope of work changes — for example, an unexpected notice or additional periods — we tell you the revised fee before doing anything further.
How do I handle GST when expired medicines are returned to the distributor?
CBIC Circular 72/46/2018 gives two routes for time-expired drugs. The return can be treated as a fresh supply by the person returning them, with a tax invoice if that person is registered, or the original supplier can issue a credit note under Section 34; the tax adjustment on a credit note is available only if it is reported within the statutory window, now 30 November following the financial year of supply. Where the manufacturer ultimately destroys the expired stock, input tax credit relating to the destroyed goods must be reversed under Section 17(5)(h). Pharmacies should reconcile expiry returns quarterly; call +91 - 9600 606 444 for help.
I made a mistake in GSTR-3B. Can I revise it?
No, GSTR-3B cannot be revised once filed. The GST law allows corrections only through adjustments in the returns of subsequent tax periods. If you under-reported tax, pay the difference with 18 percent interest in the next GSTR-3B or through Form DRC-03. If you over-reported, adjust it in a later month within the time limits allowed. Errors in GSTR-1 can be amended in the following period's return. Because corrections have deadlines, it is best to have the error reviewed quickly; our team in St. Thomas Mount can assess it the same day.
What documents do I need to give my GST consultant every month?
For monthly returns you need your sales invoices (or a sales register), purchase invoices, credit and debit notes, details of advances received for services, and any export or SEZ supply documents. If you use accounting software, an exported sales and purchase summary is enough. We then match your purchases against GSTR-2B on the portal before claiming input tax credit. Most clients in St. Thomas Mount simply share their data on WhatsApp or email by the 5th of each month and we handle the rest. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 to set up a simple monthly routine.
Is there a deadline for declaring credit notes for a financial year?
Yes, and it is strict. A credit note relating to an invoice of a financial year must be declared in your returns by 30 November following the end of that financial year, or the date of filing the annual return, whichever is earlier. After this date, you can no longer reduce your output tax through a GST credit note for that year's invoices; any adjustment becomes purely commercial with no tax benefit. Sales returns in St. Thomas Mount businesses often surface months later, especially season-end returns from distributors, so sweep your pending returns and disputes each October and issue the credit notes in time.
Our institute charges one fee covering classes, study material and hostel. How is it taxed?
A single price for naturally bundled components is a composite supply, taxed at the rate of the principal supply. For a coaching institute, coaching is the principal supply, so the entire lump sum, including printed materials and boarding provided as part of the package, attracts 18 percent. Printing separate invoices for books at nil rate out of a bundled fee is a known audit red flag and is routinely rejected. If the institute genuinely sells optional printed books to anyone at a separate price, those standalone sales can take the book's own treatment. Structure the fee schedule deliberately, not after the demand arrives.
Is there a late fee for filing GSTR-1 after the 11th?
Yes. Late fee for GSTR-1 is Rs.50 per day of delay, and Rs.20 per day where there are no outward supplies, subject to caps linked to your turnover. Although the portal historically collected GSTR-1 late fees through the next GSTR-3B, the liability arises the moment the due date passes. Delayed GSTR-1 also hurts your customers, because your invoices miss their GSTR-2B and their input tax credit gets deferred, which can strain business relationships. Filing by the 11th every month avoids both the cost and the friction.
What is IFF in the QRMP scheme?
The Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF) is an optional facility for QRMP taxpayers to upload B2B invoices for the first two months of a quarter, by the 13th of the following month, up to Rs.50 lakh of invoice value per month. Invoices uploaded through IFF appear in your buyers' GSTR-2B immediately, so they can claim input tax credit without waiting for your quarterly GSTR-1. If your customers are registered businesses that press for timely credit, using IFF keeps them happy. We file IFF for QRMP clients in St. Thomas Mount as part of the standard package.
Is there a last date to claim input tax credit for a financial year?
Yes. Under Section 16(4), ITC for invoices and debit notes of a financial year must be claimed by the earlier of 30 November following the end of that financial year or the date of filing the annual return GSTR-9. So credit on a March 2026 invoice must be taken in a GSTR-3B filed on or before 30 November 2026. Credits discovered after this date are permanently lost, which is why a year-end reconciliation in September or October, comparing books, GSTR-2B and GSTR-3B for the full year, is essential for every business in St. Thomas Mount.
I claimed some ITC wrongly last year. What interest and penalty apply if I reverse it now?
Under Section 50(3) as amended, interest at 18 percent per annum applies where wrongly availed credit has also been utilised, calculated from the date of utilisation until reversal; credit that was availed but never utilised, because your ledger balance never fell below the wrong amount, attracts no interest. Voluntary reversal is done through GSTR-3B or by payment in DRC-03, and paying before any show cause notice generally avoids or minimises penalty. If the department has already issued ASMT-10 or DRC-01, reply timelines apply, so act quickly. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 and ChennaiGST can compute the exact interest and file the DRC-03.
The GST rate on my product changed. Which rate applies to pending orders and invoices?
Section 14 of the CGST Act decides this by looking at three events: the date of supply, the date of invoice and the date of payment. Broadly, if any two of the three events fall after the rate change, the new rate applies; if two fall before, the old rate applies. So goods delivered in St. Thomas Mount before 22 September 2025 but invoiced and paid for afterwards attract the new rate, while goods delivered and invoiced earlier keep the old rate even if payment came later. Document dates carefully during any transition window, because officers test these invoices in scrutiny.
I buy electronics stock from distributors in other states. How does the IGST on purchases work for me?
Inter-state purchases carry IGST, which flows into your GSTR-2B once the distributor files GSTR-1, and it is fully available as input tax credit. When you sell locally in Tamil Nadu you charge CGST and SGST, and the law lets you use IGST credit against both, with the portal applying the set-off order automatically. There is no cost disadvantage in buying from out-of-state distributors, provided they are compliant filers; a distributor who files late delays your credit by a month. Track supplier filing discipline as part of vendor selection. Retailers in St. Thomas Mount can call +91 - 9600 606 444 for a supplier compliance scorecard.
My shop's landlord in St. Thomas Mount is not GST registered. Do I pay GST on the rent myself?
Yes, if you are registered. With effect from 10 October 2024, renting of any immovable property other than a residential dwelling by an unregistered person to a registered person was notified under reverse charge, so a registered tenant must pay 18 percent on the rent in cash through GSTR-3B and can claim ITC subject to the usual conditions. Composition taxpayers were subsequently excluded from this entry with effect from 16 January 2025. You must also raise a monthly self-invoice since the landlord is unregistered. Many shop and godown tenants in St. Thomas Mount remain unaware of this recent entry; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to regularise past months.
What are the GST rates on gold, silver and diamond jewellery?
The special rates on precious metals were retained in the GST 2.0 restructuring. Gold, silver and articles of jewellery attract 3 percent GST, rough and unworked diamonds attract 0.25 percent, and jewellery making charges billed separately attract 5 percent. When a jeweller bills a customer, the metal value and making charges can appear as separate line items with their respective rates on the same tax invoice. Old gold purchased from an unregistered customer in exchange transactions does not attract GST in the customer's hands, but valuation of the net supply must be documented carefully.
Which purchases commonly attract GST under reverse charge for a regular business?
Under Section 9(3), the recipient pays tax on notified supplies. The entries a typical business in St. Thomas Mount encounters are: goods transport agency services, services of advocates and arbitral tribunals, sponsorship provided to companies and partnership firms, services of directors, security services from non-corporate providers, renting of passenger motor vehicles from non-corporate operators charging five percent, import of services, and renting of property from unregistered landlords in notified cases. Each month, scan your expense ledger for these heads, pay the tax in cash through GSTR-3B, and claim it back as ITC where eligible. Missed RCM is among the top audit findings; call +91 - 9600 606 444 for an RCM exposure review.
What GST rate applies to a goods transport agency: 5 percent or 18 percent?
Both exist, depending on the option exercised. The default position is 5 percent payable by the specified recipient under reverse charge, with no input tax credit to the GTA. Alternatively, a GTA may opt to pay tax itself under forward charge, either at 5 percent without input tax credit or at the higher rate with full credit, which was revised from 12 percent to 18 percent with effect from 22 September 2025. The with-credit option suits transporters with large spends on vehicles and tyres. Once the forward charge option is exercised for a year, it applies to all consignments of that year.
Is GST still charged on life and health insurance premiums?
No. With effect from 22 September 2025, premiums on all individual life insurance policies, including term plans, endowment plans and ULIPs, and all individual health insurance policies, including family floater and senior citizen plans, are exempt from GST. Reinsurance of these policies is also exempt. Earlier these premiums bore 18 percent tax. Note that the exemption applies to policies taken by individuals; certain group covers procured by businesses can still attract GST, and insurers can no longer claim input credit attributable to exempt policies. Policyholders should see the benefit directly in renewal notices.

The fee of Rs.749/month and the process are the same regardless of size, and we explain the compliance position in plain language — in Tamil or English — so you understand what is being filed on your behalf and why.
