Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Devikarumariamman Nagar, Valasaravakkam

Valasaravakkam has shifted from farmland to apartment blocks, and promoters, interior contractors and building material suppliers now work alongside supermarkets and clinics on Arcot Road and in Alwarthirunagar. Works contract taxation drives most disputes here: the 18 per cent rate on contract services, blocked input credit on construction under Section 17(5) and GSTR-7 TDS where contracts involve government bodies. Against that backdrop, New GST Registration in Valasaravakkam demands more than data entry — it needs reconciliation before filing, correct classification and awareness of what local officers examine. Our Chennai team provides exactly that to clients in Valasaravakkam, Virugambakkam and Alwarthirunagar, with same-day responses on working days and WhatsApp updates at every stage. Most routine engagements complete within one to two working days once documents are in hand.

GST jurisdiction for Valasaravakkam (PIN 600087): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai South Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Valasaravakkam before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for IT and SaaS Companies in Valasaravakkam
IT and SaaS services are taxed at 18 percent domestically, but the real complexity is qualifying overseas billing as export under Section 2(6) of the IGST Act: the recipient must be outside India, consideration must arrive in convertible foreign exchange or INR where RBI permits, and the Indian entity and foreign recipient must not be mere establishments of the same person. Marketing or support arms serving a foreign parent risk classification as intermediaries under Section 13(8), making the place of supply India and the income taxable. Supplies to SEZ units are zero-rated with proper endorsements. A specialist structures contracts and invoicing so export status survives departmental scrutiny.
To get New GST Registration in Valasaravakkam, share your documents by WhatsApp or visit the office, approve the prepared draft, and the filing is completed on the GST portal from Rs.1,499.
Why Us

Why Devikarumariamman Nagar, Valasaravakkam Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

✓

A Real Local Office You Can Walk Into

We are a Chennai firm with a physical office, not a faceless portal. If you prefer to sit across a table with your papers, you are welcome. Clients from Valasaravakkam regularly visit us for registrations, notice discussions and annual return reviews.

✓

Composition Scheme Compliance Without Slips

Composition dealers have their own rulebook — CMP-08 every quarter, GSTR-4 annually by 30 June, bills of supply instead of tax invoices, and a turnover ceiling that must be watched. We handle each of these correctly so the scheme's simplicity never turns into a violation.

✓

Advisory, Not Just Data Entry

We tell you when the composition scheme stops making sense, when QRMP suits your cash flow, and when a supplier's non-compliance is quietly costing you credit. Filing is the minimum; helping you make better GST decisions is the actual job.

✓

Reverse Charge Tracked, Not Forgotten

Freight paid to transporters, advocate fees, imported services and other notified supplies attract GST under reverse charge, with self-invoicing where the supplier is unregistered. We maintain a running RCM check every period, because this is the liability self-filers most consistently miss.

✓

Clean Exits When a Business Closes

Winding up attracts its own GST obligations — the cancellation application, reversal of credit on closing stock, and the final return in GSTR-10 within three months. We close registrations properly so a business you shut in Valasaravakkam never writes back to you as a demand years later.

✓

Experience Across Trades and Sectors

Traders, manufacturers, contractors, e-commerce sellers, professionals and service exporters — we have handled GST for all of them. Whatever mix of goods and services your Valasaravakkam business supplies, the rate, classification and place-of-supply questions have almost certainly crossed our desk before.

How It Works

Our GST Registration Process

Document collection

You share PAN, Aadhaar, photographs, address proof and bank details over WhatsApp or email. We review each document against portal requirements and flag anything that could trigger an officer query.

Application preparation

We draft Form GST REG-01 with the correct business constitution, principal place of business, HSN or SAC codes and authorised signatory details, then share a summary for your confirmation.

Filing and Aadhaar authentication

The application is filed on the GST portal and we guide the authorised signatory through Aadhaar OTP authentication, which speeds up approval and usually avoids physical verification of premises.

Query handling

We track the ARN daily. If the officer issues a notice in Form REG-03 seeking clarification, we draft and file the reply in Form REG-04 within the permitted time.

GSTIN delivery and handover

Once approved, we download your registration certificate in Form REG-06, help set up portal login credentials, and brief you on invoice format, return due dates and e-way bill obligations.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

★

Tax Paid Under the Right Head

Getting IGST versus CGST and SGST right at the invoice stage spares you the painful cycle of paying the correct head again and pursuing a refund of the amount paid under the wrong one.

★

Slips Settled Before They Become Notices

Where a genuine error is found in a past period, voluntary payment through DRC-03 before any notice issues closes the matter at minimal cost, instead of letting it ripen into a demand with penalty.

★

Confidence During Officer Interactions

When a query or verification comes, you respond through a professional who deals with the department regularly, in the department's own language and format, instead of facing an officer's letter alone.

★

Growth Without Compliance Anxiety

New branches, new product lines and interstate sales all carry GST consequences. With standing professional support, you expand knowing registrations, invoicing and returns will keep pace with the business.

★

A Written Trail for Every Decision

Tax positions, rate choices and credit calls are documented as they are made, so if a question arises years later, the reasoning and evidence are on file rather than in someone's fading memory.

★

Supplier Risk Caught Early

We spot suppliers who stop uploading invoices or filing returns and alert you before their default becomes your blocked credit, letting you recover amounts or switch vendors while the exposure is still small.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Portal credentials and dataLogins handled by a small engaged team under strict confidentiality, with credentials stored securely and never passed onward.Passwords circulating on chats with freelancers and part-timers, and no accountability for who has accessed your business data.
Time costRoughly an hour a month to send data and approve drafts; the portal work, reconciliation and follow-up are ours.Hours every month lost to portal errors, JSON files, OTP failures and reworking figures — usually on the due date itself.
Due-date trackingA maintained compliance calendar with internal cut-offs days before the 11th and the 20th; we chase you for data, not the other way around.Deadlines remembered from memory or phone alarms; one busy week and the return slips past the due date.
Goods in transitE-way bills generated correctly and matched to invoices, so consignments pass roadside inspections without detention or penalty.A defective or missing e-way bill can mean detention at a checkpoint, with penalties that dwarf the tax on the consignment.
Input tax creditPurchase register matched against GSTR-2B each period, with defaulting suppliers chased so eligible credit is actually captured.Credit claimed from books alone; mismatches with GSTR-2B mean lost credit or excess claims that invite departmental queries.
Refund claimsRFD-01 filed with complete statements and annexures, tracked from ARN to bank credit, with any deficiency memo answered promptly.Incomplete claims bounce back as deficiency memos while the refund sits unclaimed for months and working capital stays blocked.

AAR Ruling

Association maintenance taxed on the whole amount once the limit is crossed

TVH Lumbini Square Owners Association - AAR Tamil Nadu, Order No. 25/ARA/2019, dated 21 June 2019 · 2019-06-21

A residents welfare association collected monthly maintenance contributions from its members. The Authority held that where the contribution per member exceeds Rs. 7,500 a month, GST is payable on the entire contribution and not merely on the amount above Rs. 7,500. The Madras High Court subsequently held, in Greenwood Owners Association, that only the excess over Rs. 7,500 is taxable, and associations now follow that judicial position.

Practical effect: Chennai apartment associations should apply the High Court position carefully and keep member-wise workings ready for departmental scrutiny.

GST Council

Cancer drugs cut to 5 per cent; namkeens and savoury snacks cut to 12 per cent

54th GST Council Meeting, New Delhi — 9 September 2024 · 2024-09-09

The Council reduced GST on three cancer drugs — Trastuzumab Deruxtecan, Osimertinib and Durvalumab — from 12 per cent to 5 per cent. Extruded or expanded savoury snacks and namkeens were cut from 18 per cent to 12 per cent prospectively, aligning them with similar ready-to-eat namkeens, while un-fried snack pellets stayed at 5 per cent. The Council also brought roof-mounted package unit (RMPU) air conditioning machines for railways under 28 per cent and moved car seats from 18 per cent to 28 per cent.

What it means for you: Snack manufacturers and distributors in Chennai should apply 12 per cent prospectively from the notification date, keeping evidence of the cut-off for past-period disputes.

Circular

GST on apartment association maintenance charges above Rs 7,500 a month

Circular No. 109/28/2019-GST dated 22 July 2019 · 2019-07-22

CBIC clarified that maintenance charged by a resident welfare association is exempt where it does not exceed Rs 7,500 per member per month, a limit raised from Rs 5,000 with effect from 25 January 2018. An association is liable to register only if its annual turnover exceeds Rs 20 lakh and its charges exceed Rs 7,500. Where the limit is crossed, tax is payable on the entire amount and not merely the excess. A member owning two flats gets the limit separately for each, and the association can claim input tax credit.

What to do about it: Apartment associations across Chennai should test both the Rs 20 lakh turnover and the Rs 7,500 per-flat tests, and remember that crossing the limit taxes the whole amount.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

How long does new GST registration take in Valasaravakkam?
3-7 working days. That assumes your documents are complete and there is no departmental query. We start the same day we receive your papers and tell you the realistic completion date upfront rather than an optimistic one. Where the GST portal or the officer causes delay — clarifications, physical verification or system issues — we track it daily and keep you informed on WhatsApp.
How much does new GST registration cost in Valasaravakkam?
Our fee for new GST registration in Valasaravakkam starts at Rs.1,499 and is quoted in full before we begin — there are no hidden charges added later. The fee covers professional work end to end: document review, preparation, filing and follow-up until completion. Government fees or portal charges, where applicable, are separate and always shown to you upfront. For an exact quote based on your turnover and business type, call +91 - 9600 606 444 and a consultant will confirm it on the call.
Is PAN compulsory for GST? Do I need separate GSTINs for different states?
Yes, PAN is mandatory for normal GST registration; the GSTIN itself embeds your PAN in characters three to twelve, with the first two digits denoting the state, which is 33 for Tamil Nadu. Registration is state-wise, so if you have a fixed place of business in Tamil Nadu and another in Karnataka, you need a separate GSTIN in each state under the same PAN. Merely selling to customers in other states does not require registration there; it is having an establishment in that state that triggers it. Within Tamil Nadu, you may also take separate registrations for distinct places of business.
What is the GST registration limit for a trader selling goods in Tamil Nadu?
In Tamil Nadu, a person engaged exclusively in the supply of goods must register for GST once aggregate turnover in a financial year crosses Rs.40 lakh. Aggregate turnover is computed PAN-wide across India and includes exempt supplies and exports, not just taxable sales. The Rs.40 lakh relaxation does not apply if you make inter-state taxable supplies of goods, sell through an e-commerce operator that collects TCS, or deal in certain notified items, in which case registration becomes mandatory earlier. If your Valasaravakkam shop is approaching the limit, apply within thirty days of crossing it.
Do I need a current account before applying for GST registration?
No. Bank account details are not mandatory at the time of applying, which helps new businesses because banks often ask for the GST certificate before opening a current account. However, after registration is granted you must furnish valid bank account details on the portal within thirty days of registration or before filing GSTR-1 or using the IFF, whichever is earlier; failure to do so can lead to suspension. A savings account in the proprietor's name is acceptable for a proprietorship. Our Valasaravakkam team can add your bank details through a quick non-core amendment once your account opens.
I am a consultant in Valasaravakkam with clients in Mumbai and Delhi. Does inter-state billing force GST registration?
Not for services. Although Section 24 makes registration compulsory for inter-state taxable supplies, Notification 10/2017-Integrated Tax specifically exempts persons making inter-state supplies of services from mandatory registration until aggregate turnover crosses Rs.20 lakh. So a freelancer or consultant in Valasaravakkam can bill clients anywhere in India without registering, as long as total turnover stays within the threshold. Note that this relief is only for services; inter-state supply of goods still requires registration from the first rupee. Once you do cross Rs.20 lakh, you must register within thirty days. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 to check your position.
I am a freelancer in Valasaravakkam. At what turnover do I need GST registration for services?
For service providers in Tamil Nadu, GST registration becomes mandatory when aggregate turnover crosses Rs.20 lakh in a financial year. This is a PAN-level, all-India figure covering taxable and exempt services together. Freelancers billing foreign clients should note that export income also counts towards the Rs.20 lakh threshold, although exports themselves can be made tax-free under a LUT after registration. If you supply both goods and services, the Rs.20 lakh service threshold applies to you, not the Rs.40 lakh goods threshold. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 if you want us to assess exactly when your registration obligation starts.
I received a clarification notice on my GST application. What should I do?
The officer has issued Form REG-03 seeking clarification, additional documents or corrections, commonly for address proof mismatches or unclear photographs. You must respond in Form REG-04 through the portal within seven working days of the notice, attaching the corrected documents and a clear written explanation. If the reply satisfies the officer, registration is approved; if you fail to reply or the reply is inadequate, the application is rejected in Form REG-05 and you must apply afresh. Many applicants in Valasaravakkam come to us at exactly this stage; a precise, document-backed REG-04 usually resolves it. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 for help.
I generate e-invoices. Do I still have to prepare GSTR-1 separately?
If your aggregate turnover exceeds Rs.5 crore, e-invoicing is mandatory and the invoice details reported to the Invoice Registration Portal auto-populate into your GSTR-1. However, auto-population is not a substitute for review. B2C sales, exports without IRN issues, credit notes, amendments and advances still need to be verified or added manually before submission. We review the auto-drafted GSTR-1 against your books each month so that what is filed matches your accounts exactly. If you have just crossed the Rs.5 crore threshold, call +91 - 9600 606 444 and we will set up e-invoicing correctly.
Which grocery items in my kirana shop attract 5% GST as pre-packaged goods?
Since 18 July 2022, specified food items such as rice, wheat, atta, pulses and flours attract 5% GST when sold in pre-packaged and labelled packs up to 25 kilograms, that is, packs bearing declarations required under the Legal Metrology Act. The same items sold loose, or in bulk packs above 25 kilograms, remain exempt. So a kirana in Valasaravakkam typically has a taxable shelf of branded retail packs and an exempt section of loose grains weighed at the counter. Your billing must separate the two streams, because the mix affects both tax collected and your input credit workings. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 for a shelf-wise mapping.
Do I have to pay GST on my Adobe, Canva or AWS subscriptions billed from abroad?
If you are GST-registered and the foreign supplier has not charged Indian GST, yes. Services received from a supplier located outside India for business purposes are an import of services, taxable in your hands under reverse charge at 18 percent. You must pay the tax in cash through GSTR-3B, raise a self-invoice, and can simultaneously claim the same amount as input tax credit if the expense is otherwise eligible, making it cash-flow neutral for most businesses. Unregistered persons do not pay reverse charge; instead, the foreign provider may charge GST under the OIDAR rules. Many Valasaravakkam agencies miss these entries during scrutiny.
We pay for foreign software subscriptions and overseas consultants. Is GST payable in India?
Yes. Import of services, meaning services from a supplier located outside India received by a person in India for business, attracts IGST under reverse charge in the recipient's hands, payable in cash and claimable as ITC if eligible. This catches cloud software, foreign professional fees, overseas advertising and licence fees. Two nuances matter: services from a related foreign party, such as your parent company, are taxable even without consideration under Schedule I, and OIDAR services supplied to unregistered consumers are taxed in the foreign supplier's own hands, not under RCM. Startups and IT firms in Valasaravakkam paying by card frequently miss these entries; reconcile foreign remittances against RCM paid annually.
What is the GST rate for salons, gyms and yoga centres?
From 22 September 2025, beauty and physical well-being services, covering salons, barbers, beauty parlours, gyms, fitness centres and yoga institutes, attract 5 percent GST without input tax credit, reduced from the earlier 18 percent. The condition attached to the concessional rate is important: because credit is barred, the GST paid on your rent, equipment, cosmetics and consumables becomes part of your cost base. Service businesses in Valasaravakkam moving to the 5 percent rate should reprice services keeping this embedded tax in mind, and must not continue charging 18 percent, since excess tax collected has to be deposited with the government.
How much time do I get to raise an invoice for services?
A tax invoice for services must be issued within thirty days from the date of supply of the service. For banks, insurers, financial institutions and NBFCs, the limit is forty-five days. Where services are supplied continuously, the invoice follows the contract: if the due date of payment is ascertainable, invoice on or before that date; if not, invoice when payment is received; and if payment is linked to completion of an event or milestone, invoice on or before its completion. Consultants and agencies that bill quarterly should check their contracts against these rules, since late invoicing defers nothing legally.
What documents must I prepare for reverse charge purchases from unregistered suppliers?
Two documents are required. First, a self-invoice: Section 31(3)(f) obliges you to issue an invoice on yourself for goods or services received from an unregistered supplier on which you pay tax under reverse charge, and under Rule 47A this self-invoice must be issued within thirty days of receiving the supply. Second, a payment voucher under Rule 52 at the time of making payment to the supplier. The self-invoice is the document on which you claim the input tax credit of the reverse charge tax paid. Freight from unregistered transporters and advocate fees are typical cases where businesses miss this paperwork.
Is there really a penalty for not displaying my GST number at my shop?
Yes. Rule 18 of the CGST Rules requires every registered person to display the registration certificate in a prominent location at the principal place of business and every additional place, and to display the GSTIN on the name board at the entry of each such premises. There is no separate penalty provision for this lapse, so officers invoke the general penalty under Section 125, which can extend to Rs.25,000 under CGST with a matching state penalty. Inspection teams visiting Valasaravakkam markets routinely check name boards first, so a few hundred rupees of signage is the cheapest compliance in the entire GST law.
We conduct training programmes and events in different cities. Which state's GST applies?
Two rules operate. For admission to an event, including tickets to exhibitions or conferences, the place of supply is where the event is held. For organising an event or providing training, the place of supply is the registered recipient's location when the client is registered; if the client is unregistered, it shifts to the venue where the event or training is actually performed. So a Valasaravakkam trainer running a workshop in Hyderabad for a registered Chennai company charges CGST plus SGST of Tamil Nadu, but the same workshop sold to unregistered individuals is taxed in Telangana. Invoice each engagement after checking the client's registration.
Something is malfunctioning on the GST portal. How do I raise a formal grievance ticket?
Use the GST Self-Service Grievance Redressal Portal at selfservice.gstsystem.in. Select Report Issue, type a keyword describing the problem, and the system suggests the matching category along with FAQs; if those do not resolve it, proceed to raise the ticket by entering your GSTIN or ARN, contact details and a description, and attach screenshots of the error. A ticket reference number is issued instantly by email and SMS. Raising a ticket also creates a record that the failure was on the system side, which helps later if a deadline was missed because of a portal outage. Our Valasaravakkam office logs tickets for clients as part of retainer support.
Are there any hidden charges for new GST registration?
No. The fee quoted before we start is the fee you pay. Government fees, portal charges or statutory late fees, where they apply, are separate and disclosed to you in advance with the exact amount. We issue a proper GST invoice for our professional fee. If the scope of work changes — for example, an unexpected notice or additional periods — we tell you the revised fee before doing anything further.
Which GST office handles Valasaravakkam businesses?
Businesses in Valasaravakkam (PIN 600087) generally fall under the CGST Chennai South Commissionerate, with state-jurisdiction cases handled by the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department. Your exact division and range can be confirmed from your GSTIN on the GST portal. We regularly appear before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and hearings, so we know the local practice and documentation preferences.
Do you provide new gst registration for small businesses and proprietorships in Valasaravakkam?
Yes. A large share of our clients in Valasaravakkam are proprietors, small traders, shop owners, freelancers and family businesses rather than large companies. The fee of Rs.1,499 and the process are the same regardless of size, and we explain the compliance position in plain language — in Tamil or English — so you understand what is being filed on your behalf and why.
