Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Kottivakkam

GST does not distinguish between a large showroom and a small service unit — the due dates and matching systems apply equally to both. Kottivakkam stretches from the Kottivakkam Seafood Market and the Kuppam Road hamlet to the East Coast Road belt of design studios, gyms, service apartments and eateries, with Natco Colony and Karpagambal Nagar housing small traders. Seafood wholesalers moving between exempt fresh and taxable frozen supply, and service-apartment operators billing through aggregators, need careful classification and TCS credit reconciliation. That is why our ASMT-10 Scrutiny Reply engagements in Kottivakkam follow the same discipline whatever the client's size: written checklists, reconciliation before filing and every acknowledgement archived. Businesses from Thiruvanmiyur and Palavakkam run on the same process, entirely over WhatsApp if they prefer.

GST jurisdiction for Kottivakkam (PIN 600041): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai South Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Kottivakkam before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST Support for Wholesale Traders in Kottivakkam
Wholesale trade runs on thin margins and heavy invoice volumes, so small GST errors multiply quickly. Once taxable supplies cross Rs.50 lakh in a month, Rule 86B requires at least one percent of output tax to be paid in cash regardless of credit balance, and quantity or turnover discounts must be passed through credit notes that satisfy Section 15(3)(b) to legally reduce taxable value. A specialist keeps your invoice-wise B2B reporting clean so retailer customers receive credit without friction, watches the Rs.5 crore e-invoicing threshold as volumes grow, and documents discount schemes in agreements the department will accept. Wholesalers in Kottivakkam can call +91 - 9600 606 444 for a margin-safe compliance review.
The cost of ASMT-10 Scrutiny Reply in Kottivakkam starts at Rs.3,999 as a fixed professional fee quoted upfront, with any government fees shown separately and no hidden additions later.
Why Us

Why Kottivakkam Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

✓

Handholding for First-Time Registrants

A new GSTIN comes with obligations nobody explains at approval — the invoice series rules, displaying the registration certificate and GSTIN at your premises, and the first return cycle. We walk new registrants in Kottivakkam through each of these so month one starts correctly.

✓

Correct HSN Codes and Rates, Verified

GSTR-1 requires four-digit HSN reporting for turnover up to Rs.5 crore and six digits above it, and a wrong code often means a wrong rate. We verify the classification of what you actually supply, so your invoices and returns rest on defensible codes.

✓

We Work with Your Existing Software

Tally, Zoho Books, Busy, marketplace reports, plain Excel or even a handwritten bill book — we take your data in whatever form your Kottivakkam business already maintains it. You are never forced to buy new software or retrain staff just to become our client.

✓

Reverse Charge Tracked, Not Forgotten

Freight paid to transporters, advocate fees, imported services and other notified supplies attract GST under reverse charge, with self-invoicing where the supplier is unregistered. We maintain a running RCM check every period, because this is the liability self-filers most consistently miss.

✓

Proactive Alerts Before Problems Become Notices

If your GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B start drifting apart, if a large supplier stops filing, or if your turnover approaches the e-invoice threshold, we flag it to you immediately. Early warnings from our side are cheaper than departmental letters later.

✓

ITC Maximisation Within the Law

We match your purchase register against GSTR-2B every period, follow up on invoices your suppliers have not uploaded, and ensure every rupee of eligible input tax credit is claimed. Clients routinely recover credit they were silently losing under self-filing.

How It Works

Our Scrutiny Reply Process

Discrepancy mapping

Each item in the ASMT-10 annexure is mapped to its source, whether a GSTR-1 versus 3B gap, a 2B excess, or an e-way bill mismatch.

Reconciliation build

We rebuild the numbers from invoices and registers, identifying timing differences, amendments and credit notes that legitimately explain the gaps the officer has computed.

Accept or explain decision

For each discrepancy we advise whether to explain with evidence or accept and pay, so the reply concedes nothing that is actually defensible.

ASMT-11 filing

The reply is drafted with annexures, approved by you, and filed in Form ASMT-11 within the thirty-day limit, with DRC-03 attached for any admitted amount.

Closure follow-up

We pursue the officer for the acceptance order in ASMT-12, respond to any further queries, and document the closure to protect you in future proceedings.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

Every Eligible Rupee of ITC Claimed

Systematic GSTR-2B matching and supplier follow-up mean input tax credit that was leaking away under self-filing is captured each month, directly reducing the cash you pay out with every GSTR-3B.

★

Lower Total Cost of Compliance

A fixed professional fee is almost always cheaper than the combination of late fees, interest, lost credit and staff hours that informal, last-minute compliance quietly accumulates over a year.

★

Growth Without Compliance Anxiety

New branches, new product lines and interstate sales all carry GST consequences. With standing professional support, you expand knowing registrations, invoicing and returns will keep pace with the business.

★

Due-Diligence Ready for Investors and Buyers

Funding rounds, partnerships and business sales all begin with a compliance check. A clean, documented GST history lets you clear that scrutiny quickly instead of watching a deal stall over old filing gaps.

★

Time Back for Your Actual Business

The hours you or your accountant spent wrestling with the portal, JSON errors and reconciliations every month return to sales, operations and customers, while trained hands manage the compliance in the background.

★

Stronger Standing with Corporate Buyers

Large buyers check vendor GST compliance before releasing payments and renewing contracts. A clean filing record with timely GSTR-1 uploads keeps your invoices reflecting in their GSTR-2B and your payments unblocked.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Late fees and interestFilings go in ahead of statutory dates, so the Rs.50-per-day late fee and 18 percent interest never arise.Late fees accumulate silently every delayed day, and interest on unpaid tax runs at 18 percent per annum.
Refund claimsRFD-01 filed with complete statements and annexures, tracked from ARN to bank credit, with any deficiency memo answered promptly.Incomplete claims bounce back as deficiency memos while the refund sits unclaimed for months and working capital stays blocked.
Portal credentials and dataLogins handled by a small engaged team under strict confidentiality, with credentials stored securely and never passed onward.Passwords circulating on chats with freelancers and part-timers, and no accountability for who has accessed your business data.
Supplier defaultsSuppliers who stop uploading invoices are identified within the period and pursued before their default becomes your blocked credit.Missing supplier invoices surface only when credit is denied, by which time recovering the amount from the vendor is difficult.
Record keepingEvery return, challan, acknowledgement and working paper archived in an organised folder, retrievable in minutes years later.Documents scattered across email, downloads and old phones; assembling records for a bank or an audit takes days.
Keeping up with changesRate changes, portal updates and new thresholds such as the Rs.5 crore e-invoice limit are tracked by us and applied to your case proactively.Changes are discovered after the fact — often through a rejected filing, a blocked e-way bill or a departmental letter.

GST Developments Worth Knowing — relevant to Kottivakkam businesses

A working knowledge of recent instruments and judgments is what separates a defensible filing from a risky one.

AAR Ruling

Credit denied on branded giveaways and trade loyalty programme rewards

Sanofi India Ltd — AAR Maharashtra, Order No. GST-ARA-115/2018-19, dated 24 April 2019 · 2019-04-24

The pharmaceutical company distributed pens, diaries, notepads and other brand reminders to doctors and stockists, and also gave rewards under a trade loyalty programme for its distributors. The Maharashtra Authority for Advance Ruling held that these items were supplied free of charge and fell within the bar on credit for goods disposed of by way of gift under Section 17(5)(h), so input tax credit on their procurement was not admissible despite the business promotion purpose.

What it means for you: Reverse credit on branded giveaways and loyalty rewards, or expect the department to raise the point during scrutiny.

Portal Advisory

CBIC answers on what counts as pre-packaged and labelled

CBIC Frequently Asked Questions on GST on pre-packaged and labelled goods, dated 17 July 2022 · 2022-07-17

A day before the change took effect, the Tax Research Unit issued FAQs explaining that the expression takes its meaning from the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and covers commodities intended for retail sale in packs of up to twenty-five kilograms or twenty-five litres that must bear statutory declarations. A single package above that limit is not covered, nor are packs supplied to an industrial or institutional consumer. Loose sale from a large pack by a retailer does not attract the levy.

What it means for you: A fifty-kilogram rice bag sold as one package stays outside the levy, but the moment it is repacked into labelled retail bags of twenty-five kilograms or less, five per cent applies.

GST Council

Hotel room GST restructured on transaction value and outdoor catering cut to 5 per cent

37th GST Council Meeting, Goa — 20 September 2019 · 2019-09-20

The Council replaced the declared tariff basis for hotel accommodation with actual transaction value and reset the slabs with effect from 1 October 2019: nil where the value is up to Rs 1,000 per day, 12 per cent between Rs 1,001 and Rs 7,500, and 18 per cent above Rs 7,500. Outdoor catering, other than in premises having daily tariff above Rs 7,500, was reduced from 18 per cent with input tax credit to 5 per cent without credit. This substantially reduced tax on mid-segment hotels and on marriage and event catering.

What to do about it: Chennai hotels and outdoor caterers had to rebuild their rate logic around the actual amount charged, and caterers lost input credit in exchange for the lower five per cent rate.

No payment, no account. If the notice does not state a date we can read, it says so rather than guessing one for you.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

Is there a GST consultant near Kottivakkam for asmt 10 notice reply?
Yes. We serve Kottivakkam and the surrounding areas from our office at Porur, Chennai - 600 116, Tamil Nadu, and most scrutiny reply work is completed online — you send documents on WhatsApp and we handle the portal work. If you prefer in-person help, we offer doorstep document pickup across Kottivakkam and you are welcome to visit our office. Reach us on +91 - 9600 606 444 between 9 AM and 8 PM, Monday to Saturday.
How long does ASMT-10 scrutiny reply take in Kottivakkam?
Draft reply in 4-6 working days; statutory limit 30 days. That assumes your documents are complete and there is no departmental query. We start the same day we receive your papers and tell you the realistic completion date upfront rather than an optimistic one. Where the GST portal or the officer causes delay — clarifications, physical verification or system issues — we track it daily and keep you informed on WhatsApp.
How many days do I get to reply to an ASMT-10 notice?
The reply in Form ASMT-11 must be filed within thirty days of being informed of the discrepancies, or within such further time as the officer permits. If you need more time to gather reconciliations, write to the officer seeking an extension before the deadline instead of staying silent. The thirty days pass quickly because a proper reply needs invoice-level matching of GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-2B and your books, so start compiling data the day the notice arrives. ChennaiGST typically completes the reconciliation and files the ASMT-11 well within the window for Kottivakkam clients; call +91 - 9600 606 444 if your deadline is close.
Who can help me reply to a GST scrutiny notice near me?
Look for a practitioner who handles scrutiny replies regularly, not just return filing, because an ASMT-11 stands or falls on the quality of its reconciliations. ChennaiGST assists businesses in Kottivakkam and across Chennai with the complete cycle: reading the ASMT-10, extracting the portal data, matching GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-2B and books, drafting the reply, paying any admitted amount in DRC-03 and following up until the ASMT-12 closure order. Fees start at Rs.3,999 depending on the number of discrepancy points. Share the notice on +91 - 9600 606 444 and we will confirm the scope and timeline the same day.
What discrepancies usually trigger a GST scrutiny notice?
The frequent triggers are: tax declared in GSTR-1 exceeding tax paid in GSTR-3B; ITC claimed in GSTR-3B exceeding credit available in GSTR-2A or GSTR-2B; e-way bill turnover higher than reported outward supplies; missing reverse charge payments on transport, legal or import services; ITC not reversed on exempt supplies under Rules 42 and 43; and mismatches with TDS credits reported by government deductors in GSTR-7. Most of these are explainable through timing differences, credit notes or amendments, provided the reply maps each rupee of difference. An annual reconciliation habit prevents the majority of these notices for Kottivakkam businesses.
I agree with part of the ASMT-10 discrepancy but not all of it. How do I respond?
A split response is perfectly acceptable and often the wisest course. Pay the portion you accept through Form DRC-03 with interest at 18 percent per annum, and in your ASMT-11 reply state the payment details along with a reasoned explanation for the balance, supported by reconciliations, invoices and ledger extracts. Paying the admitted amount voluntarily at the scrutiny stage avoids penalty on it under Section 73 and shows bona fides, which helps the officer accept your explanation on the disputed part. ChennaiGST prepares this admit-and-contest working for Kottivakkam businesses so nothing is conceded unnecessarily; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to review your notice.
What happens if I do not reply to an ASMT-10 scrutiny notice?
If no satisfactory explanation is filed within thirty days, or you fail to correct the discrepancies, the officer can escalate the matter to a departmental audit under Section 65, a special audit under Section 66, an inspection under Section 67, or straightaway initiate a demand under Section 73 or Section 74. In practice, unanswered ASMT-10 notices convert into DRC-01A intimations and then show cause notices, where penalties and hearings enter the picture. Replying at the scrutiny stage is the cheapest point to close an issue, because you are only explaining, not yet defending a demand. Do not let the window lapse.
I received an ASMT-10 scrutiny notice for my Kottivakkam business. What exactly is it?
ASMT-10 is a notice issued under Section 61 after the officer scrutinises your filed returns and finds discrepancies, such as differences between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, excess ITC compared with GSTR-2B, or turnover gaps against e-way bill data. It is not yet a demand; it is an opportunity to explain. You must respond in Form ASMT-11 within thirty days, either justifying each discrepancy with reconciliations or accepting the liability and paying through DRC-03. A well-documented ASMT-11 usually closes the matter with an ASMT-12 acceptance order. Scrutiny notices are common among Kottivakkam traders, so respond seriously but without panic.
What is the difference between DRC-01A and DRC-01 in GST?
DRC-01A is a pre-show-cause intimation. In Part A the officer communicates the tax, interest and penalty he has ascertained and gives you a chance to pay or explain before formal proceedings begin; you can respond through Part B of the same form. DRC-01, by contrast, is the summary of a formal show cause notice under Section 73 or Section 74, which starts adjudication and must be answered in Form DRC-06. Handling the DRC-01A stage well can close a matter quietly, whereas a DRC-01 requires a full legal defence. Send us the document on +91 - 9600 606 444 and we will tell you which stage you are at.
Why should I reconcile GSTR-2B with my purchase books every month?
Because your input tax credit in GSTR-3B is legally restricted to invoices appearing in GSTR-2B. Under Section 16(2)(aa) and Rule 36(4), credit is available only when the supplier has reported the invoice in their GSTR-1 and it flows into your GSTR-2B. Monthly reconciliation catches suppliers who have not filed, invoices reported with wrong GSTINs, duplicate entries and rate differences, before they become mismatch notices. It also protects working capital, since missed credits sit unclaimed. A disciplined monthly reconciliation, matched invoice by invoice, is the single most effective protection against ITC disputes for businesses in Kottivakkam.
What penalties does Section 122 of the CGST Act prescribe, and for which offences?
Section 122(1) lists twenty-one offences, including supplying without an invoice, issuing an invoice without supply, collecting tax but not depositing it beyond three months, failing to deduct or collect TDS or TCS, wrongly availing input tax credit and failing to register when liable. The penalty is Rs.10,000 or an amount equivalent to the tax evaded or credit wrongly taken, whichever is higher. For short payment of tax, Section 122(2) prescribes 10 percent of the tax or Rs.10,000, whichever is higher, in non-fraud cases, and a penalty equal to the tax or Rs.10,000, whichever is higher, where fraud is involved. An equal penalty applies under the SGST Act.
Which educational services are actually exempt from GST?
The exemption is confined to an educational institution as defined, meaning one providing pre-school education, education up to higher secondary school or equivalent, education as part of a curriculum for obtaining a qualification recognised by Indian law, or an approved vocational education course. Services by such institutions to their students, and specified input services to schools such as transport, catering and security, are exempt. Everything outside this boundary is taxable: private tuition, test preparation, hobby classes, skill courses without recognised certification, and training by ed-tech companies. The recognition of the qualification under Indian law is the decisive test, not the subject taught.
How does GST work on lorry freight paid to a goods transport agency?
A goods transport agency, identified by its issue of a consignment note, is taxed in one of two ways. By default, specified recipients such as companies and registered persons pay 5 percent under reverse charge on the freight and can claim it as ITC. Alternatively, the GTA may opt to pay tax itself under forward charge, at 5 percent without ITC or 18 percent with ITC after the September 2025 rate rationalisation replaced the earlier 12 percent option, by filing the prescribed declaration for the financial year; the invoice should state this option. Transport by an individual lorry owner without a consignment note is not a GTA service and is exempt. Check each transporter's invoice wording before deciding who pays the tax.
What details must a GST tax invoice compulsorily contain?
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules prescribes the mandatory contents: your name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive serial number not exceeding sixteen characters, unique for the financial year; the date of issue; the recipient's name, address and GSTIN if registered; the HSN or SAC code; description, quantity and unit; total and taxable value; any discount; the rate and amount of CGST, SGST or IGST shown separately; place of supply with the state name for inter-state supplies; a declaration where tax is payable on reverse charge; and signature or digital signature of the supplier. Missing fields make the invoice defective and can jeopardise your buyer's credit.
I hold stock purchased before the September 2025 rate cuts at higher tax rates. What happens when I sell it now?
You charge the rate in force on the date of supply, so goods sold on or after 22 September 2025 carry the new lower rate even if you bought them when the rate was 12% or 28%. The input tax credit you took at the old, higher rate remains fully intact in your credit ledger and is not restricted merely because output is now taxed lower; it simply sets off across your overall liability. No stock declaration was required for this transition. What traders in Kottivakkam must avoid is selling old-MRP stock at prices that ignore the tax cut without reviewing pricing. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 for a transition check.
What GST rate applies to a goods transport agency: 5 percent or 18 percent?
Both exist, depending on the option exercised. The default position is 5 percent payable by the specified recipient under reverse charge, with no input tax credit to the GTA. Alternatively, a GTA may opt to pay tax itself under forward charge, either at 5 percent without input tax credit or at the higher rate with full credit, which was revised from 12 percent to 18 percent with effect from 22 September 2025. The with-credit option suits transporters with large spends on vehicles and tyres. Once the forward charge option is exercised for a year, it applies to all consignments of that year.
Is GST still charged on health insurance premiums?
Not on individual policies. With effect from 22 September 2025, premiums on all individual life insurance policies and individual health insurance policies, including family floater and senior citizen plans, are exempt from GST, along with their reinsurance. Earlier these attracted 18 percent, so the change directly reduces the premium outgo for households. Group policies taken by businesses for employees continue to be taxable, and the input tax credit position on such group covers still depends on whether the cover is statutorily obligatory. When renewing policies, check that the insurer has passed on the exemption rather than merely repricing the premium.
My shop's landlord in Kottivakkam is not GST registered. Do I pay GST on the rent myself?
Yes, if you are registered. With effect from 10 October 2024, renting of any immovable property other than a residential dwelling by an unregistered person to a registered person was notified under reverse charge, so a registered tenant must pay 18 percent on the rent in cash through GSTR-3B and can claim ITC subject to the usual conditions. Composition taxpayers were subsequently excluded from this entry with effect from 16 January 2025. You must also raise a monthly self-invoice since the landlord is unregistered. Many shop and godown tenants in Kottivakkam remain unaware of this recent entry; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to regularise past months.
