Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Thousand Lights

Thousand Lights is Chennai's medical and corporate core, where Apollo Hospitals and a chain of speciality clinics, labs and patient guest houses crowd Greams Road and Greams Lane off Anna Salai, near the landmark Thousand Lights Mosque. Hospitals earning exempt healthcare income alongside taxable pharmacy, room and canteen revenue must apportion input tax credit under Rules 42 and 43, the district's defining GST dispute. When businesses of this kind evaluate Revocation REG-21, the real question is not price alone but who answers when something goes wrong. We serve Thousand Lights, Nungambakkam and Egmore on a standing commitment: responses within the same working day, senior scrutiny before every submission, and continued support if the department ever writes back on work carrying our preparation.

GST jurisdiction for Thousand Lights (PIN 600006): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai North Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Thousand Lights before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for Hotels and Lodges in Thousand Lights
From 22 September 2025, hotel rooms priced up to Rs.7,500 per night attract 5 percent without input credit, and rooms above that attract 18 percent with credit, ending the old middle slab. A property may also opt to be a specified premises by filing a declaration, which lets its restaurant charge 18 percent with full credit instead of the default 5 percent without credit. Banquets combining hall, food and decor need composite supply analysis, and cancellation or no-show charges are themselves taxable. A specialist prices room categories sensibly around the threshold, files the specified-premises declaration where credit recovery justifies it, and keeps tariff-linked billing accurate.
To get Revocation REG-21 in Thousand Lights, share your documents by WhatsApp or visit the office, approve the prepared draft, and the filing is completed on the GST portal from Rs.2,999.
Why Us

Why Thousand Lights Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

WhatsApp Updates at Every Stage

You receive a WhatsApp message when documents are received, when the draft is ready for your approval, and when the return or application is filed, along with the acknowledgement. You never have to call and ask what is happening with your file.

No Handing Off to Untrained Juniors

Your work is executed by trained GST staff working under direct senior supervision, not passed to interns learning on your file. The person preparing your return understands reverse charge, blocked credits and place of supply, because getting these wrong costs you money.

Multi-GSTIN and Branch Coordination

Businesses with registrations in more than one State, or multiple branches under one PAN, face cross-charge, stock transfer and input service distribution questions that single-GSTIN firms never see. We keep all your registrations consistent with each other, not just compliant individually.

Notice Support Does Not Stop at Filing

If a query, ASMT-10 scrutiny notice or DRC-01 arrives on a return we filed, we stand behind our work and help you draft the reply. You are not left alone with a departmental letter and a thirty-day clock ticking against you.

Complete Documentation, Properly Archived

Every acknowledgement, challan, computation sheet and filed return is saved and shared with you in an organised folder. When a bank, buyer or GST officer asks for a document from two years ago, it reaches you the same day without any scrambling.

Fast, Clean Registrations and Amendments

New GSTIN applications, core field amendments through REG-14, additional places of business — we prepare complete, query-resistant applications the first time. Clean paperwork is the difference between smooth approval and weeks lost answering clarification memos from the department.

How It Works

Our Revocation Process

Cancellation review

We study the cancellation order, confirm the ninety-day limitation position, and list every return and payment that must be completed before revocation can be filed.

Backlog filing

All pending returns are prepared and filed period by period, with late fees and interest at 18% per annum computed and paid through the correct heads.

REG-21 application

We draft the revocation application with an honest explanation for the default, evidence of the cured compliance, and an undertaking of timely filing, then submit it.

Query and hearing response

If the officer issues REG-23 proposing rejection, we file a reasoned reply in REG-24 within the permitted time and attend any hearing as authorised.

Reactivation and safeguards

On receipt of the revocation order in REG-22 we verify the GSTIN shows active, file any returns due for the interim period, and set up compliance reminders.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

Stronger Standing with Corporate Buyers

Large buyers check vendor GST compliance before releasing payments and renewing contracts. A clean filing record with timely GSTR-1 uploads keeps your invoices reflecting in their GSTR-2B and your payments unblocked.

Fewer Errors at the Billing Counter

Your billing staff are guided on invoice fields, rates and series discipline, so mistakes are prevented where they originate — at the counter — instead of being repaired later in the returns.

Annual Returns Without the Year-End Scramble

Because monthly data is reconciled as it happens, GSTR-9 preparation before the 31 December due date becomes a review exercise rather than a painful reconstruction of twelve untidy months.

A Professional Face on Every Invoice

Correct, complete tax invoices signal a well-run business to customers, vendors and banks alike, quietly strengthening your credibility in every transaction where your paperwork is seen.

Time Back for Your Actual Business

The hours you or your accountant spent wrestling with the portal, JSON errors and reconciliations every month return to sales, operations and customers, while trained hands manage the compliance in the background.

A Clean GSTIN That Stays Active

Continuous filing protects you from the suspension and cancellation proceedings that hit chronic non-filers, so your registration, e-way bill access and ability to issue tax invoices are never suddenly cut off.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Risk of noticesGSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B reconciled before filing, removing the mismatches that trigger most scrutiny notices.Inconsistent figures across returns quietly build a mismatch history that surfaces later as ASMT-10 scrutiny or a demand notice.
Supplier defaultsSuppliers who stop uploading invoices are identified within the period and pursued before their default becomes your blocked credit.Missing supplier invoices surface only when credit is denied, by which time recovering the amount from the vendor is difficult.
Goods in transitE-way bills generated correctly and matched to invoices, so consignments pass roadside inspections without detention or penalty.A defective or missing e-way bill can mean detention at a checkpoint, with penalties that dwarf the tax on the consignment.
Due-date trackingA maintained compliance calendar with internal cut-offs days before the 11th and the 20th; we chase you for data, not the other way around.Deadlines remembered from memory or phone alarms; one busy week and the return slips past the due date.
Input tax creditPurchase register matched against GSTR-2B each period, with defaulting suppliers chased so eligible credit is actually captured.Credit claimed from books alone; mismatches with GSTR-2B mean lost credit or excess claims that invite departmental queries.
Keeping up with changesRate changes, portal updates and new thresholds such as the Rs.5 crore e-invoice limit are tracked by us and applied to your case proactively.Changes are discovered after the fact — often through a rejected filing, a blocked e-way bill or a departmental letter.

GST Rulings and Notifications That Affect You — relevant to Thousand Lights businesses

GST law moves through notifications, circulars and court decisions. These are the ones changing how filings are prepared right now.

GST Council

GST rollout formally deferred to 1 July 2017

9th GST Council Meeting, New Delhi — 16 January 2017 (Signed Minutes, Agenda Item 5) · 2017-01-16

With the revised model law still to be brought back to the Council, the fitment of rates incomplete and taxpayers needing time to configure their accounting systems, the Council unanimously agreed to extend the GST rollout date to 1 July 2017. Maharashtra, Assam and Bihar had pressed for 1 April 2017, Assam adding that changing the tax regime in the middle of a financial year was undesirable, but the Chairperson observed that the legal and rate work would spill into March 2017 and that an April deadline had become a major challenge. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka supported 1 July 2017 as the more practical date.

What to do about it: GST law in India runs from 1 July 2017, so the first return periods, the first annual return and all transitional credit deadlines are measured from that date.

AAR Ruling

Canteen contractor serving food in office premises taxable at 5 percent

Goodwill Industrial Canteen - AAR Tamil Nadu, Order No. TN/09/AAR/2018, dated 30 August 2018 · 2018-08-30

The applicant prepared food and served it in the canteens of client companies at their premises. It sought the rate applicable to this arrangement. The Authority held that the supply of food and beverages on the premises of an industrial undertaking was taxable at 18 percent up to 26 July 2018 and at 5 percent from 27 July 2018, when the restaurant service entry was amended to cover canteens at offices and factories, the concessional rate being available without input tax credit.

How we apply it: Chennai canteen contractors should bill factory and office canteens at 5 percent and forgo input tax credit on their purchases.

Notification

GST no longer payable on advances received for supply of goods

Notification No. 66/2017-Central Tax dated 15.11.2017 · 2017-11-15

This notification exempted all registered persons other than those paying tax under the composition levy from paying GST at the time of receipt of an advance towards a supply of goods. Instead, tax is payable at the time of issue of the invoice, or when the invoice ought to have been issued, under section 12(2)(a). The earlier partial relief limited to suppliers with turnover up to Rs 1.5 crore was superseded and extended to everyone.

Why this matters: A Chennai manufacturer or trader taking booking advances on goods orders pays GST only on invoicing, though advances for services continue to attract tax on receipt.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

Can I get revocation REG-21 done online without visiting the office?
Yes, the entire process can be handled online. You share scanned documents on WhatsApp or email, we prepare and file everything on the GST portal, and you receive the acknowledgement and filed copies digitally. Businesses in Thousand Lights regularly complete revocation with us without a single office visit. If a physical verification or personal hearing is required by the department, we guide you through it.
Do you provide gst revocation application for small businesses and proprietorships in Thousand Lights?
Yes. A large share of our clients in Thousand Lights are proprietors, small traders, shop owners, freelancers and family businesses rather than large companies. The fee of Rs.2,999 and the process are the same regardless of size, and we explain the compliance position in plain language — in Tamil or English — so you understand what is being filed on your behalf and why.
Do I need to file all old returns before applying for revocation?
Yes, this is a strict precondition. Where registration was cancelled for non-filing of returns, the revocation application in REG-21 cannot succeed unless all returns due up to the effective date of cancellation are filed, with tax, interest and late fees paid in full. The GSTR-3B late fee is Rs.50 per day, or Rs.20 per day for nil returns, capped with reference to turnover, and interest runs at 18 percent per annum on unpaid tax, so a long gap adds up. We first compute the exact clearance amount for your Thousand Lights business, file the backlog, and then submit REG-21 so it is approved in one pass.
My shop in Thousand Lights had GST cancelled because I stopped filing returns during a slow period. What now?
This is the most common revocation scenario we see in Thousand Lights. The sequence is: download the cancellation order and note its date, since your ninety-day REG-21 window runs from service of that order; compute and file every pending GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B up to the cancellation date; pay the tax with 18 percent interest and the late fees; then file REG-21 with a clear explanation of the lapse and proof of regularisation. Until revocation is granted you cannot issue tax invoices or generate e-way bills, so move quickly. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 with your GSTIN and we will assess the backlog the same day.
My GST registration was cancelled by the officer. How do I get it restored?
If the registration was cancelled suo motu by the officer, you can apply for revocation in Form REG-21 on the GST portal within ninety days of the service of the cancellation order. Before applying, you must clear the cause of cancellation: file all pending returns and pay the tax, interest and late fees due up to the cancellation date. The officer may restore the registration by an order in REG-22, or issue a notice in REG-23, to which you reply in REG-24 within seven working days. Once revoked, the GSTIN becomes active again with the same number. Our Thousand Lights office handles revocations end to end; call +91 - 9600 606 444.
The 90-day window for revocation is over. Is my GST number gone forever?
Not necessarily, but your options narrow. The ninety-day period for filing REG-21 runs from service of the cancellation order, and an extension beyond it can be allowed by the Commissioner on sufficient cause being shown. Separately, you can challenge the cancellation order itself by filing an appeal in Form APL-01 before the appellate authority within three months of the order. If neither route works, the practical fallback is applying for a fresh registration, though the officer will scrutinise it closely given the cancelled history and pending dues must still be cleared. Speak to us at +91 - 9600 606 444 before choosing the route.
How long does GST revocation take after filing REG-21?
Once REG-21 is filed with all returns regularised, the officer examines the application and, if satisfied, passes a revocation order in Form REG-22 within thirty days of the application. If the officer has doubts, a notice in Form REG-23 is issued; you reply in Form REG-24 within seven working days, and the officer then decides within thirty days of your reply. In practice, clean applications where every pending return is filed and dues are paid before submission move fastest. After revocation, file any returns for the period between cancellation and revocation as required to bring the GSTIN fully current.
My turnover has fallen well below the limit. Can I surrender my GST registration near me?
Yes. A registered person whose aggregate turnover has fallen below the threshold, Rs.40 lakh for goods or Rs.20 lakh for services in Tamil Nadu, may apply for cancellation in Form REG-16 on the ground that they are no longer liable to be registered. Weigh this carefully first: after cancellation you cannot issue GST invoices or claim input credit, which matters if you supply to registered businesses, and you must pay tax on closing stock and file GSTR-10 within three months. Many small Thousand Lights traders instead consider the composition scheme to cut compliance while staying registered. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 to compare both routes.
An ASMT-13 best judgment order was passed against me. Can it still be nullified by filing the return?
Yes, Section 62 contains a self-correcting mechanism. If you furnish the valid return within sixty days of service of the ASMT-13 assessment order, the order is deemed withdrawn automatically, though late fee and interest remain payable. The Finance Act 2023 added a further cushion effective 1 October 2023: even after the sixty days, you can file the return within an additional sixty days by paying an extra late fee of Rs.100 per day under the CGST Act, with a matching state levy, for each day beyond the first window, and the order still stands withdrawn. Beyond the full one hundred and twenty days, the estimated demand becomes enforceable, leaving appeal as the remedy.
Do I have to pay GST on unsold stock when I cancel my registration?
Yes. On cancellation you must pay an amount equal to the input tax credit on inputs held in stock, inputs contained in semi-finished and finished goods, and capital goods, or the output tax payable on such goods, whichever is higher. For capital goods, the credit is reduced proportionately for the period of use. This liability is declared in the REG-16 application and settled through your electronic credit or cash ledger, with any balance payable via Form DRC-03. Clearing out or selling down stock before choosing your closure date substantially reduces this hit, which is worth planning in advance with your consultant.
Why is my e-way bill generation blocked on the portal?
Under Rule 138E, the e-way bill facility is blocked when a taxpayer has not filed GSTR-3B (or CMP-08 for composition dealers) for two or more consecutive tax periods. Since an e-way bill is mandatory for moving goods worth more than Rs.50,000, blocking effectively halts dispatches. The remedy is straightforward: file the pending returns with late fee and interest, after which the facility unblocks automatically, usually the next day. Transporters and suppliers can also be affected when a counterparty GSTIN is blocked. We clear return backlogs for businesses in Thousand Lights on priority; call +91 - 9600 606 444.
I am a composition dealer. Which returns apply to me and when?
Composition taxpayers do not file GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B. Instead, you pay tax every quarter through statement CMP-08, due by the 18th of the month following the quarter, and file one annual return, GSTR-4, by 30 June following the financial year. The scheme is available for turnover up to Rs.1.5 crore for goods, with a separate 6 percent scheme for service providers up to Rs.50 lakh. Missing CMP-08 for consecutive quarters can block your e-way bill facility. Our composition package covers all four CMP-08 filings and the annual GSTR-4 at Rs.2,999 per year.
What is the difference between a GST credit note and a commercial credit note?
A GST credit note is issued under Section 34, is reported in GSTR-1, and reduces your output tax, with the buyer reversing equivalent input credit. A commercial or financial credit note adjusts only the money owed between the parties; it carries no GST, is not reported in returns, and leaves everyone's tax position untouched. Businesses use commercial credit notes when the 30 November deadline has passed, or for post-supply discounts that do not satisfy the statutory conditions for a tax adjustment. Choosing the wrong instrument is a frequent audit finding, so decide the type before the note is issued.
What is the penalty for running a business without GST registration?
A taxable person who is liable to register but fails to do so faces a penalty of Rs.10,000 or the amount of tax evaded, whichever is higher, under Section 122 of the CGST Act. Beyond the penalty, the department can demand the tax for the entire unregistered period with interest at 18 percent per annum, and you cannot recover that tax from customers you billed without GST. Goods moved without registration and e-way bills, required for consignments above Rs.50,000, also risk detention. If your turnover has crossed the threshold, registering within thirty days is far cheaper than regularising later.
What falls under the 18 percent standard rate of GST now?
The 18 percent slab is the standard rate for most services and for goods that are neither essentials nor demerit items. Notably, several products that earlier suffered 28 percent moved down to 18 percent from 22 September 2025: air conditioners, televisions of all sizes, dishwashers, cement, small cars and motorcycles up to 350cc, and most auto parts. Apparel and footwear priced above Rs.2,500 per piece also fall at 18 percent. Most professional, business support and repair services billed by professional firms continue at 18 percent with full input tax credit.
My footwear shop sells chappals at Rs.300 and shoes at Rs.4,000 on the same bill. How do I invoice this?
One invoice can comfortably carry both rates. Each pair is tested against the Rs.2,500 sale-value threshold independently, so the chappals are billed at 5% and the Rs.4,000 shoes at 18%, as separate line items under their footwear HSN codes in Chapter 64. Your GSTR-1 HSN summary will then show turnover split across the two rates. Ensure the billing software picks the rate from the item price automatically rather than from a fixed product master, because the same article sold at different price points can legitimately fall in different slabs. A quick POS configuration check prevents months of wrong-rate billing; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to arrange one.
Which food items became completely tax-free under GST 2.0?
From 22 September 2025, UHT milk, pre-packaged and labelled paneer and chena, and all Indian breads including roti, chapati, paratha and khakhra attract nil GST. In the pharma space, thirty-three notified lifesaving drugs and medicines for cancer and rare diseases also moved to nil rate. Remember that selling nil-rated goods still has compliance effects: you issue a bill of supply instead of a tax invoice for such items, and input tax credit attributable to nil-rated supplies must be reversed proportionately under Rules 42 and 43. Grocery retailers in Thousand Lights commonly need help splitting mixed billing correctly.
If I open a bulk bag and sell rice loose by weight, is that sale taxable?
No. The 5% levy on specified food items applies only when they are supplied in pre-packaged and labelled form in packs up to 25 kilograms. When a retailer opens bulk stock and weighs out loose quantities against each customer's order, the supply is not of a pre-packaged commodity, so it remains exempt. What you cannot do is sell an intact labelled retail pack and bill it as loose. Keep purchase records showing bulk procurement and maintain the loose counter separately from the packed shelf, because officers test this distinction during inspections of grocery businesses. When in doubt on a product, call +91 - 9600 606 444.
How much does revocation REG-21 cost in Thousand Lights?
Our fee for revocation REG-21 in Thousand Lights starts at Rs.2,999 and is quoted in full before we begin — there are no hidden charges added later. The fee covers professional work end to end: document review, preparation, filing and follow-up until completion. Government fees or portal charges, where applicable, are separate and always shown to you upfront. For an exact quote based on your turnover and business type, call +91 - 9600 606 444 and a consultant will confirm it on the call.
Are there any hidden charges for revocation REG-21?
No. The fee quoted before we start is the fee you pay. Government fees, portal charges or statutory late fees, where they apply, are separate and disclosed to you in advance with the exact amount. We issue a proper GST invoice for our professional fee. If the scope of work changes — for example, an unexpected notice or additional periods — we tell you the revised fee before doing anything further.
How long does revocation REG-21 take in Thousand Lights?
5-15 working days after pending compliance is cleared. That assumes your documents are complete and there is no departmental query. We start the same day we receive your papers and tell you the realistic completion date upfront rather than an optimistic one. Where the GST portal or the officer causes delay — clarifications, physical verification or system issues — we track it daily and keep you informed on WhatsApp.
