Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Royapettah

Royapettah's trade centres on Express Avenue mall on Whites Road, the Zam Bazaar cluster and electronics and textile shops along Royapettah High Road. Landlords letting commercial space must charge 18 per cent GST on rent, while high-footfall B2C retailers struggle to reconcile POS turnover with GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B before the 11th and 20th deadlines each month. For businesses here, staying on the right side of GST is not optional — buyers check compliance, and the department's systems match every return. Our firm provides Composition & CMP-08 to clients across Royapettah and neighbouring Triplicane and Teynampet, combining Chennai jurisdiction familiarity with disciplined deadline tracking. Whether you run a shop, a service practice or a growing trading concern, we handle the portal work so you can stay focused on the business itself.

GST jurisdiction for Royapettah (PIN 600014): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai North Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Royapettah before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for Textile and Apparel Businesses in Royapettah
Textile rates changed structurally from 22 September 2025: garments and made-ups priced up to Rs.2,500 per piece attract 5 percent, while pieces above that level attract 18 percent, so one saree rack in Royapettah can legitimately carry two rates. Most fabrics remain at 5 percent, and job work processes such as dyeing, printing and embroidery for registered principals are taxed at 5 percent. A specialist builds price-point-based rate logic into your billing, tracks the credit accumulation that low-rate output still causes, and keeps Chapter 50 to 63 HSN reporting accurate so automated comparisons of your GSTR-1 and e-way bill data raise no flags.
A GST-focused Chennai practice provides Composition & CMP-08 in Royapettah with senior review, reconciliation against portal data and written fee quotes from Rs.499, rather than template filings from anonymous online portals.
Why Us

Why Royapettah Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

Experience Across Trades and Sectors

Traders, manufacturers, contractors, e-commerce sellers, professionals and service exporters — we have handled GST for all of them. Whatever mix of goods and services your Royapettah business supplies, the rate, classification and place-of-supply questions have almost certainly crossed our desk before.

Multi-GSTIN and Branch Coordination

Businesses with registrations in more than one State, or multiple branches under one PAN, face cross-charge, stock transfer and input service distribution questions that single-GSTIN firms never see. We keep all your registrations consistent with each other, not just compliant individually.

Cancelled GSTIN? We Handle Revocation Too

A registration cancelled for non-filing is not the end of the road. We bring the pending returns up to date, clear the dues and file the revocation application in REG-21 within the permitted window, restoring suspended and cancelled GSTINs to active status.

One Dedicated Point of Contact

You deal with one accountable person who knows your business, your turnover pattern and your filing history. No repeating your story to a new voice every month, and no file falling between two desks when a deadline is approaching.

Notice-Proof Filing Discipline

Most GST notices trace back to mismatches between GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B. We reconcile these before filing, not after a notice arrives, so your returns are internally consistent and the most common triggers for ASMT-10 scrutiny simply never appear.

Correct HSN Codes and Rates, Verified

GSTR-1 requires four-digit HSN reporting for turnover up to Rs.5 crore and six digits above it, and a wrong code often means a wrong rate. We verify the classification of what you actually supply, so your invoices and returns rest on defensible codes.

How It Works

Our Composition Scheme Process

Eligibility and enrolment

We verify your turnover and business type against composition conditions, and file CMP-02 to opt in from the start of the financial year where applicable.

Quarterly turnover compilation

Each quarter we collect your sales summary, apply the correct composition rate, and add any tax payable under reverse charge on specified inward supplies.

CMP-08 filing

The statement-cum-challan in Form CMP-08 is prepared, tax is paid, and the form is filed by the 18th of the month following the quarter.

Annual GSTR-4

After year end we consolidate the four quarters, reconcile with your books, and file the annual return in GSTR-4 before the 30 June due date.

Limit monitoring

We track your cumulative turnover through the year and, if the Rs.1.5 crore or Rs.50 lakh limit nears, manage a clean transition to the regular scheme.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

Fewer Errors at the Billing Counter

Your billing staff are guided on invoice fields, rates and series discipline, so mistakes are prevented where they originate — at the counter — instead of being repaired later in the returns.

Audit-Ready Records at All Times

Filed returns, challans, reconciliations and working papers are archived in order from day one. If an audit or departmental verification comes, your file is ready the same week, not assembled in a panic.

Reduced Dependence on One Employee

When GST knowledge lives inside a single staff member, their resignation becomes a compliance crisis. With our firm as the standing process, your filings continue uninterrupted regardless of internal staff changes.

Faster GST Refunds

Complete RFD-01 applications with proper statements and annexures move through the system faster and attract fewer deficiency memos, which means export and inverted-duty refunds reach your bank account sooner.

A Clean GSTIN That Stays Active

Continuous filing protects you from the suspension and cancellation proceedings that hit chronic non-filers, so your registration, e-way bill access and ability to issue tax invoices are never suddenly cut off.

Slips Settled Before They Become Notices

Where a genuine error is found in a past period, voluntary payment through DRC-03 before any notice issues closes the matter at minimal cost, instead of letting it ripen into a demand with penalty.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Risk of noticesGSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B reconciled before filing, removing the mismatches that trigger most scrutiny notices.Inconsistent figures across returns quietly build a mismatch history that surfaces later as ASMT-10 scrutiny or a demand notice.
Time costRoughly an hour a month to send data and approve drafts; the portal work, reconciliation and follow-up are ours.Hours every month lost to portal errors, JSON files, OTP failures and reworking figures — usually on the due date itself.
Keeping up with changesRate changes, portal updates and new thresholds such as the Rs.5 crore e-invoice limit are tracked by us and applied to your case proactively.Changes are discovered after the fact — often through a rejected filing, a blocked e-way bill or a departmental letter.
Input tax creditPurchase register matched against GSTR-2B each period, with defaulting suppliers chased so eligible credit is actually captured.Credit claimed from books alone; mismatches with GSTR-2B mean lost credit or excess claims that invite departmental queries.
Goods in transitE-way bills generated correctly and matched to invoices, so consignments pass roadside inspections without detention or penalty.A defective or missing e-way bill can mean detention at a checkpoint, with penalties that dwarf the tax on the consignment.
Annual return preparationMonthly reconciliations roll naturally into GSTR-9, filed comfortably before 31 December with figures already agreed through the year.Twelve months of unmatched data reconstructed in December, with differences discovered too late to be corrected cleanly.

GST Council

GST 2.0: four slabs collapsed into 5 and 18 per cent, effective 22 September 2025

56th GST Council Meeting, New Delhi — 3 September 2025 · 2025-09-03

The 56th GST Council meeting approved the biggest structural reform since 2017, replacing the 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent slabs with a two-rate structure — a 5 per cent merit rate and an 18 per cent standard rate — plus a 40 per cent de-merit rate for a narrow set of luxury and sin goods. Most items at 12 per cent moved to 5 per cent and most at 28 per cent moved to 18 per cent. The new rates took effect from 22 September 2025 and remain in force.

How we apply it: Every Chennai business had to re-map product rates, reprice stock and update billing software from 22 September 2025 — rate mistakes since then invite scrutiny notices.

Circular

Cloud kitchens taxed as restaurants, ice cream parlours are not

Circular No. 164/20/2021-GST dated 06.10.2021 · 2021-10-06

This circular settled several long-running food service disputes. It clarified that service by cloud kitchens and central kitchens is restaurant service attracting 5 per cent without input tax credit, while ice cream parlours that sell already manufactured ice cream without any element of cooking supply goods and attract the applicable goods rate with credit. It also clarified the treatment of coaching services supplied under a government scholarship scheme, overloading charges recovered at toll plazas, and services in relation to admission to amusement parks.

What it means for you: A Chennai cloud kitchen bills at 5 per cent without credit, but an ice cream parlour selling tubs and cones must charge the goods rate and can keep its credits.

Notification

Concessional rate for petroleum and coal-bed methane operations raised to 12 per cent

Notification No. 8/2022-Central Tax (Rate), dated 13 July 2022 (G.S.R. 556(E)) · 2022-07-13

Specified goods supplied to holders of petroleum exploration licences, mining leases and coal-bed methane contracts had enjoyed a concessional rate of five per cent under Notification No. 3/2017-Central Tax (Rate) subject to certificate conditions. This notification raised that concessional rate to twelve per cent with effect from 18 July 2022, following the Council's decision to trim rate concessions that were creating credit accumulation. The certificate and end-use conditions of the parent notification continued unchanged.

How we apply it: Suppliers of equipment to oil and gas operators must obtain the prescribed certificate before applying the concessional rate, and must apply the rate in force on the date of supply.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

Are there any hidden charges for composition & CMP-08?
No. The fee quoted before we start is the fee you pay. Government fees, portal charges or statutory late fees, where they apply, are separate and disclosed to you in advance with the exact amount. We issue a proper GST invoice for our professional fee. If the scope of work changes — for example, an unexpected notice or additional periods — we tell you the revised fee before doing anything further.
How much does composition & CMP-08 cost in Royapettah?
Our fee for composition & CMP-08 in Royapettah starts at Rs.499/quarter and is quoted in full before we begin — there are no hidden charges added later. The fee covers professional work end to end: document review, preparation, filing and follow-up until completion. Government fees or portal charges, where applicable, are separate and always shown to you upfront. For an exact quote based on your turnover and business type, call +91 - 9600 606 444 and a consultant will confirm it on the call.
What is the composition scheme and who can opt for it?
The composition scheme lets small taxpayers pay GST at a flat rate on turnover instead of the normal invoice-wise mechanism, with drastically lighter compliance. Manufacturers, traders and restaurants with aggregate turnover up to Rs.1.5 crore in the preceding financial year can opt in. In exchange, you cannot collect tax from customers, cannot claim input tax credit, cannot make inter-state outward supplies, and must issue a bill of supply instead of a tax invoice. Compliance shrinks to a quarterly payment statement, CMP-08 by the 18th after each quarter, and one annual return, GSTR-4, by 30 June. It suits B2C businesses in Royapettah with steady margins.
My kirana shop under composition sells both loose grains and branded packs. On what turnover do I pay the 1%?
A composition trader pays 1% on the turnover of taxable supplies of goods and services in the state, so exempt sales such as loose, unbranded grains and fresh vegetables are excluded from the tax computation. Your CMP-08 working should therefore split total collections into exempt and taxable streams, paying 0.5% CGST and 0.5% SGST only on the taxable portion, typically the pre-packaged and labelled packs and other taxable groceries. Note that the full turnover, exempt included, still counts towards the Rs.1.5 crore composition ceiling. Kirana owners in Royapettah often overpay by applying 1% on everything; call +91 - 9600 606 444 for a corrected working.
What rate of tax does a composition dealer pay?
Manufacturers and traders pay 1 percent of turnover, split as 0.5 percent CGST and 0.5 percent SGST; for traders this is computed on taxable turnover of goods. Restaurants not serving alcohol pay 5 percent, split 2.5 percent and 2.5 percent. Service providers under the special scheme with turnover up to Rs.50 lakh pay 6 percent, split 3 percent and 3 percent. In every case the tax comes out of your own pocket because a composition dealer cannot collect GST from customers, so pricing must absorb it. The trade-off is minimal paperwork: quarterly CMP-08 and one annual GSTR-4.
What happens if my turnover crosses Rs.1.5 crore in the middle of the year?
Your composition option lapses from the day aggregate turnover exceeds Rs.1.5 crore, or Rs.50 lakh under the services scheme. You must file Form CMP-04, the intimation of withdrawal, within seven days of the event, start issuing tax invoices and charging GST from that day, and switch to regular returns, GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th. On the positive side, you can claim input tax credit on stock held on the transition date by filing Form ITC-01 within thirty days. If your Royapettah business is nearing the ceiling, plan the switch in advance; call +91 - 9600 606 444 for help.
Can I voluntarily come out of the composition scheme and claim input credit again?
Yes. File Form CMP-04 to withdraw from the scheme; a voluntary withdrawal can be filed at any time and takes effect from the date you indicate. From that date you become a regular taxpayer: issue tax invoices, charge GST, and file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B or opt for QRMP. To recover credit, file Form ITC-01 within thirty days of withdrawal, declaring input tax credit on inputs in stock, semi-finished and finished goods held on the day before the switch. Businesses in Royapettah usually opt out when their customer base shifts to registered dealers who want input credit on purchases from them.
Can service providers in Royapettah opt for the composition scheme?
Yes, through a separate scheme introduced under Notification 2/2019. Service providers, or mixed suppliers not eligible for the regular composition scheme, with aggregate turnover up to Rs.50 lakh in the preceding financial year can pay tax at 6 percent, comprising 3 percent CGST and 3 percent SGST, on their turnover. The same restrictions apply: no input tax credit, no tax collection from clients, no inter-state outward supply, and a bill of supply instead of a tax invoice. Compliance is CMP-08 quarterly by the 18th and GSTR-4 annually by 30 June. Small salons, tutors, and repair services in Royapettah commonly use this; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to check fit.
What happens if I miss filing GSTR-3B this month?
A late fee of Rs.50 per day (Rs.20 per day for a nil return) accrues automatically, capped based on your turnover, and interest at 18 percent per annum applies on tax paid late. You also cannot file the next period's GSTR-1 until the pending GSTR-3B is filed, since returns must be filed sequentially. If two consecutive tax periods remain unfiled, e-way bill generation gets blocked, and continued default can lead to suspension of your GSTIN. File the pending return at the earliest; call +91 - 9600 606 444 and we can clear the backlog quickly.
Is there a late fee for filing GSTR-1 after the 11th?
Yes. Late fee for GSTR-1 is Rs.50 per day of delay, and Rs.20 per day where there are no outward supplies, subject to caps linked to your turnover. Although the portal historically collected GSTR-1 late fees through the next GSTR-3B, the liability arises the moment the due date passes. Delayed GSTR-1 also hurts your customers, because your invoices miss their GSTR-2B and their input tax credit gets deferred, which can strain business relationships. Filing by the 11th every month avoids both the cost and the friction.
The portal auto-filled an interest amount in my GSTR-3B. Can I edit or dispute it?
The portal computes interest on delayed filings under Rule 88B and auto-populates it in Table 5.1 of the next period's GSTR-3B, with a break-up shown period-wise. The system value is based on your cash ledger debits and the days of delay, and while the field permits upward revision, reducing the system-computed figure will flag the return. If you believe the computation is wrong, for instance because a liability related to an earlier period was declared with correct interest already paid through DRC-03, pay what is correct and keep the working; the department can be satisfied later with the reconciliation. We verify these auto-computations for clients before every filing.
Which educational services are actually exempt from GST?
The exemption is confined to an educational institution as defined, meaning one providing pre-school education, education up to higher secondary school or equivalent, education as part of a curriculum for obtaining a qualification recognised by Indian law, or an approved vocational education course. Services by such institutions to their students, and specified input services to schools such as transport, catering and security, are exempt. Everything outside this boundary is taxable: private tuition, test preparation, hobby classes, skill courses without recognised certification, and training by ed-tech companies. The recognition of the qualification under Indian law is the decisive test, not the subject taught.
How is GST charged on clothes and footwear after the rate change?
The rate now turns on a per-piece price line of Rs.2,500. Apparel, made-up textile articles and footwear with a sale value up to Rs.2,500 per piece attract 5 percent GST, while pieces priced above Rs.2,500 attract 18 percent. The test applies item by item, so a single invoice from a garment shop in Royapettah can carry both rates: a Rs.1,800 shirt at 5 percent and a Rs.4,000 pair of shoes at 18 percent on the same bill. Configure the billing software to test the price of each line item automatically rather than applying one blanket rate.
Is GST payable under reverse charge on payments made to our company directors?
It depends on the capacity in which the director is paid. CBIC Circular 140/10/2020 settles the position: remuneration to a whole-time or executive director who is an employee, paid as salary with TDS under Section 192, is outside GST entirely as an employer-employee transaction. In contrast, sitting fees, commission and professional charges paid to independent or non-executive directors, typically suffering TDS under Section 194J, are taxable and the company pays 18 percent under reverse charge, claiming ITC. Companies in Royapettah should split their director payments ledger accordingly, issue self-invoices for the RCM portion, and keep board resolutions and TDS treatment consistent as supporting evidence.
Is GST charged before or after the discount shown on my invoice?
Discounts given before or at the time of supply and recorded on the face of the invoice are excluded from the value of supply under Section 15(3)(a). You therefore charge GST on the net amount after discount. For example, a Rs.10,000 item with a 10 percent trade discount shown on the invoice is taxed on Rs.9,000. The condition is documentation: the discount must appear on the invoice itself. Informal reductions settled outside the bill do not reduce taxable value. Retail schemes such as festival discounts and trade margins should always be structured to print on the invoice.
What is the GST rate on a works contract for a commercial building?
Under GST, a works contract relating to immovable property is treated wholly as a supply of services, and the standard rate is 18 percent on the contract value, with the contractor eligible for input tax credit on cement, steel and other inputs. This applies to construction, fabrication, erection, repair and renovation contracts for factories, offices and commercial buildings. The old VAT-plus-service-tax splitting of material and labour is gone; one rate applies to the whole consideration. Contractors should also note that free-issue materials supplied by the client can affect valuation, so contract drafting deserves attention before quoting.
Which everyday goods now attract 5 percent GST?
The 5 percent slab now covers most household essentials that earlier fell in the 12 or 18 percent brackets: soaps, shampoos, toothpaste and toothbrushes, hair oil, bicycles, kitchen utensils and tableware. Packaged foods such as butter, ghee, cheese, namkeens, sauces, pasta, biscuits and chocolates are also at 5 percent, as are most medicines, medical devices and agricultural machinery. Apparel and footwear priced up to Rs.2,500 per piece attract 5 percent as well. Retailers in Royapettah should update billing software rate masters item by item rather than assuming old rates continue.
Are any goods exempt from GST when transported by a GTA?
Yes. Transport by a GTA of agricultural produce, milk, salt and foodgrains including flours and pulses, organic manure, newspapers and magazines registered with the Registrar of Newspapers, relief materials for victims of calamities, and defence or military equipment is exempt regardless of freight value. Note that the older exemptions for small consignments, Rs.1,500 for a full truckload and Rs.750 for a single consignee, were withdrawn with effect from 18 July 2022, so ordinary cargo enjoys no value-based relief now. Transporters serving agricultural markets should describe the produce accurately on the consignment note to support the exemption.
Which GST office handles Royapettah businesses?

Your exact division and range can be confirmed from your GSTIN on the GST portal. We regularly appear before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and hearings, so we know the local practice and documentation preferences.
