Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Sivakami Nagar, Kathivakkam

Kathivakkam is a fishing town wedged between the Ennore Creek and the Chennai-Ennore Expressway, where Thazhankuppam and Ernavur kuppams supply fish traders and ice plants, and works contractors serve the Ennore Thermal Power Station, Ennore Foundries and the container traffic moving down Manali High Road. Labour and works contractors here face reverse charge and GST-TDS issues, and fish traders need clarity on exempt versus processed supplies. When businesses of this kind evaluate GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing, the real question is not price alone but who answers when something goes wrong. We serve Kathivakkam, Ennore and Ernavur on a standing commitment: responses within the same working day, senior scrutiny before every submission, and continued support if the department ever writes back on work carrying our preparation.

GST jurisdiction for Kathivakkam (PIN 600057): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai North Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Kathivakkam before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST Compliance for Retail Shops in Kathivakkam
A retail counter bills hundreds of small consumer sales a day, and GST treats them very differently from B2B trade. B2C turnover goes into GSTR-1 as consolidated rate-wise figures, exempt goods need a bill of supply instead of a tax invoice, and a mixed basket of taxable and exempt stock forces proportionate credit reversal under Rule 42. Departments now compare UPI and card settlements against declared turnover, so daily sales must reconcile with bank inflows. A specialist sets up your billing software with a verified HSN and rate master, evaluates the one percent composition option against regular filing, and keeps declared figures consistent before any mismatch query arrives.
Businesses in Kathivakkam typically choose professional GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing because reconciled, senior-reviewed filings from Rs.749 prevent the late fees, lost credit and mismatch notices that self-filing commonly produces.
Why Us

Why Sivakami Nagar, Kathivakkam Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

Complete Documentation, Properly Archived

Every acknowledgement, challan, computation sheet and filed return is saved and shared with you in an organised folder. When a bank, buyer or GST officer asks for a document from two years ago, it reaches you the same day without any scrambling.

ITC Maximisation Within the Law

We match your purchase register against GSTR-2B every period, follow up on invoices your suppliers have not uploaded, and ensure every rupee of eligible input tax credit is claimed. Clients routinely recover credit they were silently losing under self-filing.

Multi-GSTIN and Branch Coordination

Businesses with registrations in more than one State, or multiple branches under one PAN, face cross-charge, stock transfer and input service distribution questions that single-GSTIN firms never see. We keep all your registrations consistent with each other, not just compliant individually.

Cancelled GSTIN? We Handle Revocation Too

A registration cancelled for non-filing is not the end of the road. We bring the pending returns up to date, clear the dues and file the revocation application in REG-21 within the permitted window, restoring suspended and cancelled GSTINs to active status.

Same-Day Response, Every Working Day

Send your query on call or WhatsApp and you hear back the same working day, usually within a few hours. When a due date is close or a notice has landed, waiting two days for a reply is simply not acceptable, and we know it.

One Dedicated Point of Contact

You deal with one accountable person who knows your business, your turnover pattern and your filing history. No repeating your story to a new voice every month, and no file falling between two desks when a deadline is approaching.

How It Works

Our Monthly Returns Process

Monthly data collection

At month end we remind you and collect sales invoices, purchase bills and credit notes in whatever format you maintain, including Excel, Tally exports or scanned copies.

GSTR-1 preparation and filing

We prepare invoice-wise outward supply details, validate GSTINs of your B2B customers, summarise B2C supplies and file GSTR-1 on the portal before the 11th.

ITC reconciliation with GSTR-2B

We download your auto-drafted GSTR-2B, match it against purchase records, and claim only eligible input tax credit so that mismatches do not trigger scrutiny notices later.

Tax computation and confirmation

We compute net tax payable after ITC set-off, share the working with you for approval, and generate the payment challan for any cash liability.

GSTR-3B filing and reporting

After your confirmation and tax payment, we file GSTR-3B before the 20th and send you both filed acknowledgements along with a one-page summary of the month.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

A Written Trail for Every Decision

Tax positions, rate choices and credit calls are documented as they are made, so if a question arises years later, the reasoning and evidence are on file rather than in someone's fading memory.

Slips Settled Before They Become Notices

Where a genuine error is found in a past period, voluntary payment through DRC-03 before any notice issues closes the matter at minimal cost, instead of letting it ripen into a demand with penalty.

Export Benefits Fully Utilised

With the LUT filed at the start of each financial year and refund claims tracked to credit, exporters supply without blocking funds in IGST and recover accumulated credit on schedule.

Growth Without Compliance Anxiety

New branches, new product lines and interstate sales all carry GST consequences. With standing professional support, you expand knowing registrations, invoicing and returns will keep pace with the business.

Time Back for Your Actual Business

The hours you or your accountant spent wrestling with the portal, JSON errors and reconciliations every month return to sales, operations and customers, while trained hands manage the compliance in the background.

Waiver Benefits Never Missed

Late-fee waivers and amnesty windows notified by the GST Council are applied to your history within their deadlines, capturing reliefs that most businesses only hear about once the window has already closed.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Input tax creditPurchase register matched against GSTR-2B each period, with defaulting suppliers chased so eligible credit is actually captured.Credit claimed from books alone; mismatches with GSTR-2B mean lost credit or excess claims that invite departmental queries.
Time costRoughly an hour a month to send data and approve drafts; the portal work, reconciliation and follow-up are ours.Hours every month lost to portal errors, JSON files, OTP failures and reworking figures — usually on the due date itself.
Refund claimsRFD-01 filed with complete statements and annexures, tracked from ARN to bank credit, with any deficiency memo answered promptly.Incomplete claims bounce back as deficiency memos while the refund sits unclaimed for months and working capital stays blocked.
Portal credentials and dataLogins handled by a small engaged team under strict confidentiality, with credentials stored securely and never passed onward.Passwords circulating on chats with freelancers and part-timers, and no accountability for who has accessed your business data.
Annual return preparationMonthly reconciliations roll naturally into GSTR-9, filed comfortably before 31 December with figures already agreed through the year.Twelve months of unmatched data reconstructed in December, with differences discovered too late to be corrected cleanly.
Due-date trackingA maintained compliance calendar with internal cut-offs days before the 11th and the 20th; we chase you for data, not the other way around.Deadlines remembered from memory or phone alarms; one busy week and the return slips past the due date.

Portal Advisory

Negative liability in GSTR-4 for composition dealers and how it was corrected

GSTN Advisory, 2021 — negative liability appearing in Form GSTR-4 filed by composition taxpayers · 2021

Composition taxpayers who left Table 6 of the annual return GSTR-4 blank found that the tax already paid through Form CMP-08 was treated as an excess payment, creating a negative liability that was then adjusted against later quarters. GSTN clarified that outward supply and reverse charge figures must be entered in Table 6 even though the tax has already been paid, and arranged for wrongly created negative balances to be reversed.

Practical effect: Composition dealers in Chennai must complete Table 6 of GSTR-4 each year, or the portal will show a false credit and later recover it.

Circular

No section 73(11) penalty for merely paying self-assessed tax late

Circular No. 76/50/2018-GST dated 31 December 2018 · 2018-12-31

This circular answered a set of unrelated questions. The most important is that the penalty under section 73(11) does not apply where self-assessed tax shown in the return is paid late; only interest under section 50 and, where warranted, general penalty under section 125 arise. It also dealt with the rate applicable to notes issued under section 142(2) and who is the owner of goods in transit. A corrigendum of 7 March 2019 clarified that tax collected at source under the Income-tax Act is not included in the taxable value.

What to do about it: If a demand adds a heavy penalty simply because GSTR-3B tax was paid late, this circular is the answer.

Notification

Thirty-five per cent fixed sum method for monthly payment under QRMP

Notification No. 85/2020-Central Tax · 2020-11-10

A quarterly filer must still deposit tax for each of the first two months of the quarter in Form GST PMT-06 by the 25th of the following month. This notification prescribed the fixed sum method, under which the taxpayer may simply pay thirty-five per cent of the tax paid in cash in the preceding quarter, or the full cash tax of the preceding month if the previous return was monthly. No interest arises on the shortfall if this route is followed and the quarterly return is filed on time.

Practical effect: Using the fixed sum challan protects a Chennai quarterly filer from interest even if the actual liability for that month turns out to be higher.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

How long does GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing take in Kathivakkam?
Filed before the 11th and 20th of every month. That assumes your documents are complete and there is no departmental query. We start the same day we receive your papers and tell you the realistic completion date upfront rather than an optimistic one. Where the GST portal or the officer causes delay — clarifications, physical verification or system issues — we track it daily and keep you informed on WhatsApp.
Are there any hidden charges for GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing?
No. The fee quoted before we start is the fee you pay. Government fees, portal charges or statutory late fees, where they apply, are separate and disclosed to you in advance with the exact amount. We issue a proper GST invoice for our professional fee. If the scope of work changes — for example, an unexpected notice or additional periods — we tell you the revised fee before doing anything further.
What is GSTR-2B and why does my consultant match it before filing?
GSTR-2B is an auto-drafted statement of the input tax credit available to you, generated on the 14th of every month from the GSTR-1 and IFF filings of your suppliers. Input tax credit in GSTR-3B can only be claimed for invoices appearing in GSTR-2B, so matching your purchase register against it before filing is essential. If a supplier has not uploaded an invoice, the credit must be deferred and the supplier followed up. This monthly reconciliation is included in our return filing service for businesses in Kathivakkam.
Swiggy and Zomato pay the GST on my restaurant orders. How do I show these sales in my returns?
Since 1 January 2022, tax on restaurant services supplied through e-commerce operators is payable by the operator under Section 9(5), so you do not charge GST on app orders and no TCS is collected on them either. You must still report these supplies: show them in GSTR-3B Table 3.1.1(ii) as supplies on which the operator pays tax, and disclose them in GSTR-1, without paying tax on them again. Direct dine-in and takeaway billing remains taxable in your hands at 5%. Mixing up these tables is a common error we correct for restaurants in Kathivakkam; call +91 - 9600 606 444 for help.
My workshop bills customers for spare parts and labour together. How should GST be charged?
The accepted practice, supported by CBIC's clarification on servicing, is that where the invoice separately shows the value of parts and the value of labour, each takes its own treatment: parts as a supply of goods and repair labour as a service at 18%. Since auto components also moved to 18% from September 2025, both lines of a typical job card now carry the same rate, which removes the old temptation to shift value between parts and labour. Still keep the split, because HSN and SAC reporting in GSTR-1 differ for goods and services. Workshops can call +91 - 9600 606 444 for invoice-format templates.
Is there a deadline for declaring credit notes for a financial year?
Yes, and it is strict. A credit note relating to an invoice of a financial year must be declared in your returns by 30 November following the end of that financial year, or the date of filing the annual return, whichever is earlier. After this date, you can no longer reduce your output tax through a GST credit note for that year's invoices; any adjustment becomes purely commercial with no tax benefit. Sales returns in Kathivakkam businesses often surface months later, especially season-end returns from distributors, so sweep your pending returns and disputes each October and issue the credit notes in time.
My SaaS startup in Kathivakkam bills both US and Indian customers. Is everything zero-rated?
No. Only the supplies satisfying the export conditions are zero-rated under your LUT. Subscriptions billed to customers located in India are ordinary taxable supplies at 18 percent, with the place of supply being the registered customer's location, or the address on record for unregistered users. Your GSTR-1 must therefore separate export invoices from domestic B2B and B2C supplies, and your accumulated ITC refund is computed only in proportion to export turnover. Many Kathivakkam SaaS founders wrongly treat all revenue as export because billing runs through one gateway; a revenue-wise mapping avoids demands later. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 for a review.
My bank account was debited for a GST challan but the cash ledger shows nothing. What do I do?
This is a payment-communication failure between the bank and the portal, and the prescribed remedy is Form PMT-07, filed under Services, then Payments, then Grievance against Payment. Quote the CPIN, bank name and debit details; the system takes up the discrepancy with the bank, and the amount either credits your ledger once the bank confirms, or is re-credited to your account if the transaction failed. Do not pay twice immediately; most cases resolve within a day or two. If a return due date is pressing, generate a fresh challan and later seek refund of the duplicate. Kathivakkam clients can call +91 - 9600 606 444 for urgent help.
My buyer has not accepted my credit note. Does that affect my tax reduction?
Yes. Your output tax reduction on a credit note is conditional on the corresponding input tax credit being reversed by the recipient. On the portal, the Invoice Management System now presents your credit notes to the buyer for action, and a rejected credit note flows back into your liability computation. Practically, this means credit notes need commercial agreement before they are reported, not after. Keep an email trail with the buyer, confirm they will reverse the credit in their GSTR-3B, and reconcile IMS actions monthly. ChennaiGST tracks credit note acceptance for Kathivakkam clients as part of the monthly filing cycle.
My business had zero sales this month. Do I still need to file GST returns?
Yes. Every registered taxpayer must file returns for every tax period, even when there are no sales, no purchases and no tax liability. In that case you file nil GSTR-1 and nil GSTR-3B. Failure to file nil returns attracts a late fee of Rs.20 per day per return, capped at Rs.500 per return, and breaks the sequential filing chain. Prolonged non-filing can lead to suspension and eventually cancellation of your GSTIN. Our nil return plan for dormant businesses in Kathivakkam starts at just Rs.749 per month.
How do I claim credit of the IGST paid on imported goods?
IGST paid at customs on imported goods is fully creditable, with the bill of entry serving as the prescribed duty-paying document instead of a tax invoice. The data flows from ICEGATE into your GSTR-2B, and the claim is made in Table 4(A)(1) of GSTR-3B. If a bill of entry does not appear, use the search BoE facility on the GST portal to fetch the record before assuming it is missing. Remember that basic customs duty and the social welfare surcharge are never creditable; only the IGST and compensation cess components are. Importers in Kathivakkam should reconcile their ICEGATE ledger with GSTR-2B quarterly, because clearance-date mismatches are frequent.
What is the difference between the electronic cash ledger and the electronic credit ledger?
The electronic cash ledger reflects actual money you have deposited through challans, plus TDS and TCS credits you have accepted; it can pay tax, interest, penalty, late fee and any other amount. The electronic credit ledger reflects input tax credit claimed through your returns, and it can be used only for paying output tax, never for interest, penalty or late fee. Both are visible under Services, then Ledgers, after login. Refund of an excess cash balance is possible, while credit is refundable only in specified cases such as exports and inverted duty structure.
Can my GST registration be cancelled for not filing returns?
Yes. Under Rule 21A, the department can suspend a GSTIN where returns are not filed for a continuous period, and Section 29 permits cancellation where a regular taxpayer has not filed returns for six months (two quarters for QRMP, and a composition taxpayer defaulting on the annual return beyond three months). During suspension you cannot issue tax invoices or file returns, which freezes the business. If cancellation happens, revocation must be sought through REG-21 within 90 days after clearing all dues. If you have received a suspension notice in Kathivakkam, call +91 - 9600 606 444 immediately.
Is GST applicable on rent for my shop or office premises?
Yes. Renting of commercial property such as shops, offices, godowns and industrial sheds is a taxable supply of services at 18 percent, charged by the landlord under forward charge once the landlord's aggregate turnover, including this rent, crosses Rs.20 lakh. The tenant, if registered and using the premises for business, can claim the GST as input tax credit, since renting is not a blocked credit. Landlords with several small commercial properties often cross the threshold without realising it, because rent from all properties on the same PAN is clubbed. A yearly turnover check protects against retrospective demands.
If I open a bulk bag and sell rice loose by weight, is that sale taxable?
No. The 5% levy on specified food items applies only when they are supplied in pre-packaged and labelled form in packs up to 25 kilograms. When a retailer opens bulk stock and weighs out loose quantities against each customer's order, the supply is not of a pre-packaged commodity, so it remains exempt. What you cannot do is sell an intact labelled retail pack and bill it as loose. Keep purchase records showing bulk procurement and maintain the loose counter separately from the packed shelf, because officers test this distinction during inspections of grocery businesses. When in doubt on a product, call +91 - 9600 606 444.
Are hospital and clinic charges exempt from GST?
Healthcare services provided by a clinical establishment, an authorised medical practitioner or paramedics are exempt from GST. This covers diagnosis, treatment and care for illness, injury, deformity or pregnancy in any recognised system of medicine in India, and includes transportation of patients by ambulance, which is separately exempt for any provider. Consultation fees, surgery charges, nursing and diagnostic services within this definition carry no GST, which is why hospitals do not charge tax on treatment bills. The exemption attaches to the nature of the service, not the size of the hospital, so both a large corporate hospital and a single-doctor clinic are covered.
Is GST payable on hostel or paying guest accommodation in Kathivakkam?
A specific exemption effective 15 July 2024 covers accommodation services supplied at a value up to Rs.20,000 per person per month, provided the accommodation is supplied for a minimum continuous period of ninety days. Student hostels and working men's or women's PGs in Kathivakkam charging within this limit for long stays are therefore exempt. Where the monthly charge exceeds Rs.20,000, or the stay is shorter than ninety days, the supply is taxable like ordinary accommodation. Operators should maintain stay records and agreements evidencing the duration, because the ninety-day condition is what officers test first during verification.
What is the GST rate on a works contract for a commercial building?
Under GST, a works contract relating to immovable property is treated wholly as a supply of services, and the standard rate is 18 percent on the contract value, with the contractor eligible for input tax credit on cement, steel and other inputs. This applies to construction, fabrication, erection, repair and renovation contracts for factories, offices and commercial buildings. The old VAT-plus-service-tax splitting of material and labour is gone; one rate applies to the whole consideration. Contractors should also note that free-issue materials supplied by the client can affect valuation, so contract drafting deserves attention before quoting.
