Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Govindu Street, T. Nagar

GST does not distinguish between a large showroom and a small service unit — the due dates and matching systems apply equally to both. T. Nagar is South India's densest retail market, from silk showrooms on Usman Road to jewellery flagships around Panagal Park and garment stalls on Ranganathan Street. Turnover crosses the Rs.5 crore e-invoice threshold quickly here, and high-volume B2C billing produces chronic GSTR-1 versus GSTR-3B gaps, branch stock-transfer questions and close scrutiny of jewellers' HSN-wise reporting. That is why our GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing engagements in T. Nagar follow the same discipline whatever the client's size: written checklists, reconciliation before filing and every acknowledgement archived. Businesses from West Mambalam and Nungambakkam run on the same process, entirely over WhatsApp if they prefer.

GST jurisdiction for T. Nagar (PIN 600017): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai South Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from T. Nagar before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST Services for Jewellers in T. Nagar
Jewellery sits in a rate structure of its own: 3 percent on gold and silver ornaments, 5 percent on making charges when billed separately, and 0.25 percent on rough precious stones. Buying old gold from an unregistered individual attracts no reverse charge, and if exchanged ornaments are resold as they are, the margin scheme under Rule 32(5) can limit tax to the dealer's margin. Chapter 71 goods are exempt from e-way bills, yet delivery challans for karigar job work and HUID-linked stock registers remain essential during inspections. A specialist keeps making-charge invoicing, old-gold purchase records and job work documentation aligned so high-value scrutiny passes cleanly.
A GST-focused Chennai practice provides GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing in T. Nagar with senior review, reconciliation against portal data and written fee quotes from Rs.749, rather than template filings from anonymous online portals.
Why Us

Why Govindu Street, T. Nagar Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

We Work with Your Existing Software

Tally, Zoho Books, Busy, marketplace reports, plain Excel or even a handwritten bill book — we take your data in whatever form your T. Nagar business already maintains it. You are never forced to buy new software or retrain staff just to become our client.

Advisory, Not Just Data Entry

We tell you when the composition scheme stops making sense, when QRMP suits your cash flow, and when a supplier's non-compliance is quietly costing you credit. Filing is the minimum; helping you make better GST decisions is the actual job.

Deadline Tracking Done for You

GSTR-1 by the 11th, GSTR-3B by the 20th, CMP-08 by the 18th after each quarter — we maintain a compliance calendar for every client and start chasing your data well before the due date, so late fees never enter the picture.

Waiver and Amnesty Windows Applied for You

Whenever the GST Council notifies a late-fee waiver or an amnesty window for pending returns or old demands, we check every client's history against it and act within the deadline. Relief that businesses in T. Nagar would otherwise read about after it lapsed reaches our clients in time.

Experience Across Trades and Sectors

Traders, manufacturers, contractors, e-commerce sellers, professionals and service exporters — we have handled GST for all of them. Whatever mix of goods and services your T. Nagar business supplies, the rate, classification and place-of-supply questions have almost certainly crossed our desk before.

WhatsApp Updates at Every Stage

You receive a WhatsApp message when documents are received, when the draft is ready for your approval, and when the return or application is filed, along with the acknowledgement. You never have to call and ask what is happening with your file.

How It Works

Our Monthly Returns Process

Monthly data collection

At month end we remind you and collect sales invoices, purchase bills and credit notes in whatever format you maintain, including Excel, Tally exports or scanned copies.

GSTR-1 preparation and filing

We prepare invoice-wise outward supply details, validate GSTINs of your B2B customers, summarise B2C supplies and file GSTR-1 on the portal before the 11th.

ITC reconciliation with GSTR-2B

We download your auto-drafted GSTR-2B, match it against purchase records, and claim only eligible input tax credit so that mismatches do not trigger scrutiny notices later.

Tax computation and confirmation

We compute net tax payable after ITC set-off, share the working with you for approval, and generate the payment challan for any cash liability.

GSTR-3B filing and reporting

After your confirmation and tax payment, we file GSTR-3B before the 20th and send you both filed acknowledgements along with a one-page summary of the month.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

Export Benefits Fully Utilised

With the LUT filed at the start of each financial year and refund claims tracked to credit, exporters supply without blocking funds in IGST and recover accumulated credit on schedule.

Credit Notes That Actually Reduce Your Tax

Sales returns, discounts and price revisions are adjusted through properly reported credit notes within the statutory window, so you never keep paying tax on turnover you have already reversed.

Every Eligible Rupee of ITC Claimed

Systematic GSTR-2B matching and supplier follow-up mean input tax credit that was leaking away under self-filing is captured each month, directly reducing the cash you pay out with every GSTR-3B.

Goods That Move Without Detention

Correct e-way bills matched to correct invoices mean your consignments clear roadside inspections cleanly, avoiding detention proceedings whose penalties can far exceed the tax on the goods being carried.

No Interest Outflows at 18 Percent

Interest on delayed GST payment runs at 18 percent per annum, which is costlier than most working capital finance. Timely computation and payment through our calendar keeps that meter permanently at zero.

A Written Trail for Every Decision

Tax positions, rate choices and credit calls are documented as they are made, so if a question arises years later, the reasoning and evidence are on file rather than in someone's fading memory.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Goods in transitE-way bills generated correctly and matched to invoices, so consignments pass roadside inspections without detention or penalty.A defective or missing e-way bill can mean detention at a checkpoint, with penalties that dwarf the tax on the consignment.
Record keepingEvery return, challan, acknowledgement and working paper archived in an organised folder, retrievable in minutes years later.Documents scattered across email, downloads and old phones; assembling records for a bank or an audit takes days.
Late fees and interestFilings go in ahead of statutory dates, so the Rs.50-per-day late fee and 18 percent interest never arise.Late fees accumulate silently every delayed day, and interest on unpaid tax runs at 18 percent per annum.
Risk of noticesGSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B reconciled before filing, removing the mismatches that trigger most scrutiny notices.Inconsistent figures across returns quietly build a mismatch history that surfaces later as ASMT-10 scrutiny or a demand notice.
When a notice arrivesA professional drafts the reply in the department's format and files it within the statutory window, such as thirty days for ASMT-11.You face departmental language alone, and a missed reply deadline can convert a simple query into a demand with penalty.
Input tax creditPurchase register matched against GSTR-2B each period, with defaulting suppliers chased so eligible credit is actually captured.Credit claimed from books alone; mismatches with GSTR-2B mean lost credit or excess claims that invite departmental queries.

GST Council

Fortified rice kernel cut to 5 per cent; gene therapy fully exempted; ACC blocks with fly ash at 12 per cent

55th GST Council Meeting, Jaisalmer — 21 December 2024 · 2024-12-21

The 55th meeting reduced GST on fortified rice kernel (FRK) to 5 per cent regardless of end use, supporting public distribution fortification programmes. Gene therapy was fully exempted from GST, a major relief for patients of ultra-expensive treatments. Autoclaved aerated concrete (ACC) blocks containing more than 50 per cent fly ash content were classified under HS 6815 at 12 per cent. The Council also reduced the rate of compensation cess to 0.1 per cent on supplies to merchant exporters, bringing it on par with the concessional 0.1 per cent GST rate on such supplies.

Practical effect: Construction suppliers dealing in fly-ash-based AAC blocks should bill at 12 per cent and revisit classification disputes on past supplies.

Case Law

Supreme Court holds branded software supplied on a medium is goods for tax purposes

Tata Consultancy Services v. State of Andhra Pradesh — Supreme Court, (2005) 1 SCC 308, judgment dated 05-11-2004 · 2004-11-05

The Court examined whether canned or branded software sold on floppies and discs could be taxed as goods under sales tax law. It held that the term goods covers all types of movable property, tangible or intangible, provided the item can be abstracted, transmitted, transferred, delivered, stored and possessed. Branded software satisfies that test and is goods, even though the intellectual content is intangible. Customised software developed for a single customer stands on a different footing.

What to do about it: Chennai software and IT product businesses should classify off-the-shelf licences separately from bespoke development, since the goods or services character drives the rate, the place of supply and the e-invoice treatment.

Notification

The master rate notification for every service supplied in India

Notification No. 11/2017-Central Tax (Rate) dated 28.06.2017 · 2017-06-28

This is the parent notification that fixes the CGST rate for services. It runs as a long table arranged by service accounting code, from construction and works contract under heading 9954, through accommodation, restaurant and transport services, to the residual entry that taxes any service not specifically listed. Many entries carry conditions, most commonly a lower rate available only if input tax credit is not taken. Every later services rate change since 2017 has been an amendment to this notification.

How we apply it: Whenever you are asked what rate applies to a service you supply in Chennai, the answer starts and ends with the current amended text of Notification 11/2017.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

Which GST office handles T. Nagar businesses?
Businesses in T. Nagar (PIN 600017) generally fall under the CGST Chennai South Commissionerate, with state-jurisdiction cases handled by the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department. Your exact division and range can be confirmed from your GSTIN on the GST portal. We regularly appear before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and hearings, so we know the local practice and documentation preferences.
Do you provide GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing for businesses on Govindu Street?
Yes. We serve businesses on and around Govindu Street in T. Nagar — shops, offices, godowns and home-run businesses alike. Document pickup can be arranged at your premises, or you can send everything on WhatsApp and complete monthly returns without leaving your counter. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 and mention your location; a consultant will confirm the fee and timeline immediately.
My shop was closed for a month. Can I skip filing GST returns for that period?
No. Once you hold an active GSTIN, returns must be filed for every tax period regardless of business activity. If there were no sales and no purchases, you must file nil GSTR-1 and nil GSTR-3B for that month. Skipping creates a break in the sequential filing chain, blocks future returns, accumulates late fees and can eventually lead to suspension of registration. Nil returns take only minutes and can even be filed by SMS. If your business in T. Nagar has periods of inactivity, ask us about our low-cost nil filing plan.
What is the due date for GSTR-3B in Tamil Nadu?
For monthly filers, GSTR-3B is due on the 20th of the following month. If you are registered in Tamil Nadu and have opted for the QRMP scheme, your quarterly GSTR-3B is due on the 22nd of the month following the quarter. GSTR-3B is the summary return through which you actually pay tax, so missing it attracts a late fee of Rs.50 per day (Rs.20 for nil returns) plus interest at 18 percent per annum on tax paid late.
Is there a deadline for declaring credit notes for a financial year?
Yes, and it is strict. A credit note relating to an invoice of a financial year must be declared in your returns by 30 November following the end of that financial year, or the date of filing the annual return, whichever is earlier. After this date, you can no longer reduce your output tax through a GST credit note for that year's invoices; any adjustment becomes purely commercial with no tax benefit. Sales returns in T. Nagar businesses often surface months later, especially season-end returns from distributors, so sweep your pending returns and disputes each October and issue the credit notes in time.
Is there a late fee for filing GSTR-1 after the 11th?
Yes. Late fee for GSTR-1 is Rs.50 per day of delay, and Rs.20 per day where there are no outward supplies, subject to caps linked to your turnover. Although the portal historically collected GSTR-1 late fees through the next GSTR-3B, the liability arises the moment the due date passes. Delayed GSTR-1 also hurts your customers, because your invoices miss their GSTR-2B and their input tax credit gets deferred, which can strain business relationships. Filing by the 11th every month avoids both the cost and the friction.
Our institute charges one fee covering classes, study material and hostel. How is it taxed?
A single price for naturally bundled components is a composite supply, taxed at the rate of the principal supply. For a coaching institute, coaching is the principal supply, so the entire lump sum, including printed materials and boarding provided as part of the package, attracts 18 percent. Printing separate invoices for books at nil rate out of a bundled fee is a known audit red flag and is routinely rejected. If the institute genuinely sells optional printed books to anyone at a separate price, those standalone sales can take the book's own treatment. Structure the fee schedule deliberately, not after the demand arrives.
Do I have to report HSN codes in my GSTR-1?
Yes. Taxpayers with aggregate turnover up to Rs.5 crore must report a 4-digit HSN summary for B2B supplies in Table 12 of GSTR-1, while those above Rs.5 crore must report 6-digit HSN codes for all supplies. The portal now validates HSN entries against its master list, so wrong or truncated codes can block filing. Getting HSN classification right also determines your tax rate, so it is worth a one-time review of your product list. Our team in T. Nagar maintains a verified HSN master for every client.
Our company spends on CSR activities. Is the GST paid on those purchases creditable?
Not any more. Section 17(5)(fa), inserted with effect from 1 October 2023, specifically blocks input tax credit on goods or services used for corporate social responsibility activities under Section 135 of the Companies Act. Before this date the position was contested, with advance rulings going both ways, so credits availed for earlier periods may still be defensible on merits if questioned. For current periods, GST on CSR purchases, whether school furniture donated or medical supplies distributed, is a cost. Companies in T. Nagar should route CSR procurement through a separate expense code so their monthly reconciliation automatically excludes these invoices from the ITC claim.
What is the 180-day payment rule for input tax credit?
Under the second proviso to Section 16(2) read with Rule 37, if you do not pay your supplier the invoice value including tax within 180 days from the invoice date, you must reverse the proportionate ITC in GSTR-3B, along with interest at 18 percent per annum from the date of availment. The credit can be re-availed, without any time limit, once payment is actually made. Long credit periods negotiated with vendors around T. Nagar frequently breach this rule unnoticed, so your reconciliation should include an ageing of creditors mapped to ITC claimed. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 if you need this ageing built into your monthly process.
What is the late fee if I file a nil return late?
For a nil GSTR-3B or nil GSTR-1 filed after the due date, the late fee is Rs.20 per day of delay (Rs.10 CGST plus Rs.10 SGST), capped at Rs.500 per return (Rs.250 plus Rs.250). No interest applies since there is no tax payable. While Rs.500 sounds small, defaults across several months add up, and the bigger cost is the compliance chain breaking and your GSTIN being flagged. If you have a backlog of nil returns pending in T. Nagar, call +91 - 9600 606 444; clearing them usually takes us a single working day.
Which purchases commonly attract GST under reverse charge for a regular business?
Under Section 9(3), the recipient pays tax on notified supplies. The entries a typical business in T. Nagar encounters are: goods transport agency services, services of advocates and arbitral tribunals, sponsorship provided to companies and partnership firms, services of directors, security services from non-corporate providers, renting of passenger motor vehicles from non-corporate operators charging five percent, import of services, and renting of property from unregistered landlords in notified cases. Each month, scan your expense ledger for these heads, pay the tax in cash through GSTR-3B, and claim it back as ITC where eligible. Missed RCM is among the top audit findings; call +91 - 9600 606 444 for an RCM exposure review.
I returned an advance because the deal was cancelled. What document do I issue?
It depends on how far the paperwork went. If you had issued only a receipt voucher and no tax invoice, you issue a refund voucher under Rule 51 when returning the advance, and the tax paid on that advance can be adjusted. If a tax invoice had already been issued, the cancellation is handled through a credit note under Section 34 instead. The refund voucher records the original receipt voucher reference, the amount refunded and the tax involved. Event managers and contractors see cancellations regularly, and using the wrong document between these two is a common reconciliation error.
How do I document free samples and gifts given to customers?
Goods supplied genuinely free of cost to unrelated persons are not a supply, so no tax invoice is raised and no GST is charged; the movement is covered by a delivery challan marked as free samples. The cost is that input tax credit on those goods must be reversed. Two traps deserve care: gifts to related persons or between distinct GSTINs of the same PAN are taxable under Schedule I even without consideration, and promotional schemes like buy one get one are treated as a single price for two items, taxed normally with credit intact. Structure your T. Nagar promotions with this distinction in mind.
I declare income under Section 44ADA. Does that mean I am exempt from GST?
No, this is a common myth. Section 44ADA is a presumptive taxation scheme under the Income Tax Act that lets professionals declare fifty percent of gross receipts as income; it has nothing to do with GST. GST liability depends solely on aggregate turnover crossing the registration threshold and the nature of your supplies. In fact, the two departments now cross-match data, so gross receipts reported in your ITR and Form 26AS that exceed the GST turnover you declared are a known trigger for notices. Treat the two laws as parallel obligations, each with its own limits and filings.
My shop's landlord in T. Nagar is not GST registered. Do I pay GST on the rent myself?
Yes, if you are registered. With effect from 10 October 2024, renting of any immovable property other than a residential dwelling by an unregistered person to a registered person was notified under reverse charge, so a registered tenant must pay 18 percent on the rent in cash through GSTR-3B and can claim ITC subject to the usual conditions. Composition taxpayers were subsequently excluded from this entry with effect from 16 January 2025. You must also raise a monthly self-invoice since the landlord is unregistered. Many shop and godown tenants in T. Nagar remain unaware of this recent entry; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to regularise past months.
How do I decide whether to charge CGST plus SGST or IGST on an invoice?
Compare two data points: the location of the supplier and the place of supply determined under the IGST Act. If both fall in the same state, the supply is intra-state and you charge CGST plus SGST; if they fall in different states, it is inter-state and you charge IGST. The buyer's billing address alone is not the test; the place of supply rules for the specific goods or service govern. Common traps include hotel stays, property-linked services and bill-to ship-to chains, where the place of supply departs from the customer's address. Configuring these rules in your billing software saves T. Nagar businesses repeated corrections; call +91 - 9600 606 444 for a setup review.
Is GST payable under reverse charge on payments made to our company directors?
It depends on the capacity in which the director is paid. CBIC Circular 140/10/2020 settles the position: remuneration to a whole-time or executive director who is an employee, paid as salary with TDS under Section 192, is outside GST entirely as an employer-employee transaction. In contrast, sitting fees, commission and professional charges paid to independent or non-executive directors, typically suffering TDS under Section 194J, are taxable and the company pays 18 percent under reverse charge, claiming ITC. Companies in T. Nagar should split their director payments ledger accordingly, issue self-invoices for the RCM portion, and keep board resolutions and TDS treatment consistent as supporting evidence.
How long does GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing take in T. Nagar?

Send what you have on WhatsApp to +91 - 9600 606 444 and we will confirm within the same working day exactly what else is needed, so nothing is rejected later for a missing paper.
