Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Wallajah Road, Chepauk

Chepauk is Chennai's government and sporting quarter: the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Wallajah Road, the Chepauk Palace secretariat offices in Ezhilagam, the University of Madras along Kamarajar Salai and hostels and eateries on Bells Road and Victoria Hostel Road. Caterers, event vendors and contractors billing government departments face 2 per cent GST TDS reported in GSTR-7, making monthly credit acceptance essential. That commercial character shapes the GST questions we see from Chepauk every week — registrations, monthly returns, credit mismatches and departmental queries. We deliver New GST Registration for businesses in Chepauk, and clients also reach us from Triplicane and Chintadripet nearby. Documents move over WhatsApp, drafts are approved before filing, and a senior consultant reviews every submission, so distance from our office never dilutes the quality of the work.

GST jurisdiction for Chepauk (PIN 600005): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai North Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Chepauk before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for Event Management Businesses in Chepauk
Event management lives on place-of-supply rules. For registered clients, tax follows the client's location, but admission to events and services for unregistered customers are taxed where the event actually happens under Section 12(7) of the IGST Act, so a wedding or conference executed outside Tamil Nadu can shift your billing state. Staging events in another state without premises there may require casual registration before the event begins. Packages combining venue, catering, decor and sound are composite supplies taxed at the principal service's 18 percent rate. Event firms in Chepauk running multi-city calendars need a specialist who maps each contract's place of supply before invoicing; call +91 - 9600 606 444.
A GST-focused Chennai practice provides New GST Registration in Chepauk with senior review, reconciliation against portal data and written fee quotes from Rs.1,499, rather than template filings from anonymous online portals.
Why Us

Why Wallajah Road, Chepauk Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

Deadline Tracking Done for You

GSTR-1 by the 11th, GSTR-3B by the 20th, CMP-08 by the 18th after each quarter — we maintain a compliance calendar for every client and start chasing your data well before the due date, so late fees never enter the picture.

QRMP Managed Properly, Not Just Opted Into

Quarterly filing still demands monthly attention — IFF uploads so your buyers see their credit on time, and tax payment through PMT-06 by the 25th for the first two months of each quarter. We run that monthly rhythm so QRMP saves you effort without creating gaps.

A Real Local Office You Can Walk Into

We are a Chennai firm with a physical office, not a faceless portal. If you prefer to sit across a table with your papers, you are welcome. Clients from Chepauk regularly visit us for registrations, notice discussions and annual return reviews.

Correct HSN Codes and Rates, Verified

GSTR-1 requires four-digit HSN reporting for turnover up to Rs.5 crore and six digits above it, and a wrong code often means a wrong rate. We verify the classification of what you actually supply, so your invoices and returns rest on defensible codes.

Complete Documentation, Properly Archived

Every acknowledgement, challan, computation sheet and filed return is saved and shared with you in an organised folder. When a bank, buyer or GST officer asks for a document from two years ago, it reaches you the same day without any scrambling.

We Work with Your Existing Software

Tally, Zoho Books, Busy, marketplace reports, plain Excel or even a handwritten bill book — we take your data in whatever form your Chepauk business already maintains it. You are never forced to buy new software or retrain staff just to become our client.

How It Works

Our GST Registration Process

Document collection

You share PAN, Aadhaar, photographs, address proof and bank details over WhatsApp or email. We review each document against portal requirements and flag anything that could trigger an officer query.

Application preparation

We draft Form GST REG-01 with the correct business constitution, principal place of business, HSN or SAC codes and authorised signatory details, then share a summary for your confirmation.

Filing and Aadhaar authentication

The application is filed on the GST portal and we guide the authorised signatory through Aadhaar OTP authentication, which speeds up approval and usually avoids physical verification of premises.

Query handling

We track the ARN daily. If the officer issues a notice in Form REG-03 seeking clarification, we draft and file the reply in Form REG-04 within the permitted time.

GSTIN delivery and handover

Once approved, we download your registration certificate in Form REG-06, help set up portal login credentials, and brief you on invoice format, return due dates and e-way bill obligations.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Record keepingEvery return, challan, acknowledgement and working paper archived in an organised folder, retrievable in minutes years later.Documents scattered across email, downloads and old phones; assembling records for a bank or an audit takes days.
Due-date trackingA maintained compliance calendar with internal cut-offs days before the 11th and the 20th; we chase you for data, not the other way around.Deadlines remembered from memory or phone alarms; one busy week and the return slips past the due date.
Late fees and interestFilings go in ahead of statutory dates, so the Rs.50-per-day late fee and 18 percent interest never arise.Late fees accumulate silently every delayed day, and interest on unpaid tax runs at 18 percent per annum.
Annual return preparationMonthly reconciliations roll naturally into GSTR-9, filed comfortably before 31 December with figures already agreed through the year.Twelve months of unmatched data reconstructed in December, with differences discovered too late to be corrected cleanly.
Input tax creditPurchase register matched against GSTR-2B each period, with defaulting suppliers chased so eligible credit is actually captured.Credit claimed from books alone; mismatches with GSTR-2B mean lost credit or excess claims that invite departmental queries.
Keeping up with changesRate changes, portal updates and new thresholds such as the Rs.5 crore e-invoice limit are tracked by us and applied to your case proactively.Changes are discovered after the fact — often through a rejected filing, a blocked e-way bill or a departmental letter.

Compliance Watch

GST Developments Worth Knowing — relevant to Chepauk businesses

A working knowledge of recent instruments and judgments is what separates a defensible filing from a risky one.

AAR Ruling

Money received by a liaison office from its head office is not a supply

Takko Holding GmbH, India liaison office - AAR Tamil Nadu, Order No. TN/14/AAR/2018, dated 27 September 2018 · 2018-09-27

A German company's liaison office in Tamil Nadu carried on only the representational and coordination activities permitted by the Reserve Bank of India and received funds from its head office to meet office expenses. The Authority held that liaison activities carried on strictly within the RBI permission do not amount to a supply under the CGST and TNGST Acts, the remittances from the head office are not consideration, and the liaison office is neither liable to pay GST nor required to register.

What it means for you: A genuine liaison office in Chennai doing only representational work stays outside GST, but any commercial activity changes that position.

Case Law

Prohibition order modified and goods released provisionally where the department showed no supporting material

Tvl. Rising International Co. v. Commissioner of Central GST and Central Excise — Madras High Court (Madurai Bench), W.P.(MD) No. 12152 of 2020, decided 6 October 2020 (G.R. Swaminathan J.) · 2020-10-06

An importer of toys challenged seizure and prohibition orders issued during a GST inspection. The Madras High Court partly allowed the petition, sustaining the seizure but modifying the prohibition order and directing provisional release of the goods on a personal bond plus a deposit of Rs. 2 lakh. The Court noted that the officers had not produced the material on which their reason to believe was founded, and took into account the severe business disruption caused by the pandemic.

What to do about it: Seized stock can often be released provisionally on bond and a modest deposit while the investigation continues, instead of remaining locked up indefinitely.

GST Council

Composition threshold raised to Rs 1 crore

22nd GST Council Meeting, New Delhi — 6 October 2017 (PIB Release ID 1505133) · 2017-10-06

The Council raised the composition scheme threshold from Rs 75 lakh to Rs 1 crore of annual aggregate turnover, and from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 75 lakh for Special Category States other than Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand, which were given Rs 1 crore. Both migrated and new taxpayers could opt in under the higher threshold up to 31 March 2018, with the option becoming operational from the first day of the month following the month in which it was exercised.

How we apply it: This brought a large part of Chennai's small trading and restaurant sector within reach of quarterly composition filing instead of monthly returns.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

Do you provide new GST registration for businesses on Wallajah Road?
Yes. We serve businesses on and around Wallajah Road in Chepauk — shops, offices, godowns and home-run businesses alike. Document pickup can be arranged at your premises, or you can send everything on WhatsApp and complete GST registration without leaving your counter. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 and mention your location; a consultant will confirm the fee and timeline immediately.
Which GST office handles Chepauk businesses?
Businesses in Chepauk (PIN 600005) generally fall under the CGST Chennai North Commissionerate, with state-jurisdiction cases handled by the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department. Your exact division and range can be confirmed from your GSTIN on the GST portal. We regularly appear before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and hearings, so we know the local practice and documentation preferences.
I am a freelancer in Chepauk. At what turnover do I need GST registration for services?
For service providers in Tamil Nadu, GST registration becomes mandatory when aggregate turnover crosses Rs.20 lakh in a financial year. This is a PAN-level, all-India figure covering taxable and exempt services together. Freelancers billing foreign clients should note that export income also counts towards the Rs.20 lakh threshold, although exports themselves can be made tax-free under a LUT after registration. If you supply both goods and services, the Rs.20 lakh service threshold applies to you, not the Rs.40 lakh goods threshold. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 if you want us to assess exactly when your registration obligation starts.
What documents are needed for GST registration of a proprietorship?
For a sole proprietorship you need the proprietor's PAN card, Aadhaar card, a passport-size photograph, proof of the principal place of business, and bank details such as a cancelled cheque or bank statement. For business premises proof, an electricity bill, property tax receipt or legal ownership document works for owned property, while rented property needs the rent agreement plus the owner's utility bill. No separate business PAN is required because a proprietorship uses the proprietor's own PAN. If you share your documents on WhatsApp, our Chepauk team can usually file the application the same day; call +91 - 9600 606 444.
My turnover is below the limit. Should I still take GST registration voluntarily?
Voluntary registration is allowed under Section 25(3) even below the threshold, and it makes sense in specific situations: your corporate customers insist on GST invoices, you want to claim input tax credit on purchases, you plan to sell on e-commerce platforms, or you want to export under LUT. The trade-off is real: once registered, you must charge GST, file GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of every month or opt for the quarterly QRMP scheme, even for nil turnover. Weigh compliance cost against credit benefit before deciding; many small Chepauk businesses do benefit.
I am a doctor running my own clinic. Do I need GST registration at all?
If your entire income consists of exempt healthcare services, no. Section 23 provides that a person engaged exclusively in supplying exempt goods or services is not liable to registration, irrespective of turnover, so a practitioner earning even Rs.1 crore purely from consultations and treatment need not register. The position changes the moment taxable income enters the same PAN, such as commercial property rent, pharmacy sales to outpatients, aesthetic procedures or paid webinars for a company; then the normal Rs.20 lakh aggregate threshold applies, counting the exempt receipts too. Many doctors in Chepauk cross the line through rental income without noticing.
I am a consultant in Chepauk with clients in Mumbai and Delhi. Does inter-state billing force GST registration?
Not for services. Although Section 24 makes registration compulsory for inter-state taxable supplies, Notification 10/2017-Integrated Tax specifically exempts persons making inter-state supplies of services from mandatory registration until aggregate turnover crosses Rs.20 lakh. So a freelancer or consultant in Chepauk can bill clients anywhere in India without registering, as long as total turnover stays within the threshold. Note that this relief is only for services; inter-state supply of goods still requires registration from the first rupee. Once you do cross Rs.20 lakh, you must register within thirty days. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 to check your position.
Will a GST officer visit my shop in Chepauk before approving registration?
Not in every case. Physical verification of premises is typically ordered when Aadhaar authentication has not been completed, when authentication fails, or when the application is flagged as risky by the department's analytics. The officer visits the declared address, photographs the premises, and uploads a verification report on the portal. To pass smoothly, display your name board with GSTIN space, keep the rent agreement or ownership papers at hand, and ensure someone responsible is present. Verification can also happen after registration is granted. Genuine premises with matching documents have nothing to worry about during such visits.
I trade in fabrics and yarn. What are the GST rates for the textile chain now?
The September 2025 rationalisation largely unified the textile value chain at 5%. Man-made fibre came down from 18% and man-made yarn from 12%, joining cotton and natural fibres at 5%, which corrected the long-standing inverted duty problem in the man-made segment. Woven and knitted fabrics continue at 5%. For a fabric merchant, this means input and output rates now broadly match, so credit accumulation reduces sharply compared with earlier years. Textile traders should re-examine old accumulated credit and pricing after the change. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 for a rate-wise review of your product list.
My company has taken a residential flat on rent. Why is our accountant paying GST on it?
Because of a reverse charge entry effective 18 July 2022: renting of a residential dwelling to a registered person attracts 18 percent GST payable by the tenant under reverse charge, even when the landlord is unregistered. Renting to unregistered individuals for residence remains fully exempt. There is a carve-out from 1 January 2023: a proprietor renting a dwelling in his personal capacity for use as his own residence, on his own account and not for the business, is exempt. Companies and firms renting flats, including for guest houses, must therefore pay RCM monthly through GSTR-3B. We correct many such missed entries during our compliance health checks.
How do I find the correct GST rate for my product or service?
The rate is always determined by classification: identify the correct HSN code for goods or SAC code for services, then read the rate against that code in the current CBIC rate notifications, as amended by the September 2025 restructuring notifications. The GST portal and the CBIC website both host searchable rate finders. Classification disputes are common where a product sits between two descriptions, and the wrong choice means either losing margin or facing a demand with interest. ChennaiGST maintains verified rate masters for clients in Chepauk and reviews them whenever the Council changes rates; call +91 - 9600 606 444 for a classification review.
Why is there GST on an under-construction flat but not on a ready-to-move one?
Construction of an apartment intended for sale is a supply of service only when any part of the consideration is received before the completion certificate is issued or before first occupation. Such under-construction sales attract 1 percent for affordable residential apartments and 5 percent for other residential apartments, both without input tax credit to the builder. Once the completion certificate is issued, sale of the building is neither a supply of goods nor of services under Schedule III, so a ready-to-move flat carries no GST at all, only stamp duty and registration charges. Timing of booking therefore changes the buyer's cost materially.
My GST status shows suspended. What does that mean for my business in Chepauk?
Suspension is an intermediate state that occurs when you apply for cancellation, or when the officer initiates cancellation proceedings, commonly for return defaults or data mismatches. While suspended, you cannot make taxable supplies, meaning you should not issue tax invoices or charge GST, and e-way bill generation is blocked. The fix depends on the cause: if you triggered it by applying for cancellation, await the order; if the department triggered it, reply to the show cause notice in REG-18 within seven working days and clear pending returns. Acting within the notice window usually gets the suspension lifted; call +91 - 9600 606 444 if you have received one.
What GST rate applies to a goods transport agency: 5 percent or 18 percent?
Both exist, depending on the option exercised. The default position is 5 percent payable by the specified recipient under reverse charge, with no input tax credit to the GTA. Alternatively, a GTA may opt to pay tax itself under forward charge, either at 5 percent without input tax credit or at the higher rate with full credit, which was revised from 12 percent to 18 percent with effect from 22 September 2025. The with-credit option suits transporters with large spends on vehicles and tyres. Once the forward charge option is exercised for a year, it applies to all consignments of that year.
What is the place of supply for freight and courier charges on goods?
For transportation of goods, including by courier, Section 12(8) fixes the place of supply as the location of the recipient where the recipient is registered. Where the recipient is unregistered, it is the location where the goods are handed over for transportation. So a registered Chepauk manufacturer paying a transporter for a Chennai-to-Delhi movement has Tamil Nadu as the place of supply, and the RCM liability is paid as CGST plus SGST if the transporter is also in Tamil Nadu. This rule matters chiefly for paying reverse charge on GTA freight under the correct heads, because paying IGST where CGST and SGST were due creates a refund-and-repay exercise later.
Can I transfer cash ledger balance from one GSTIN to another GSTIN of the same PAN?
Yes, within limits. Under Section 49(10), unutilised IGST and CGST balances in the electronic cash ledger can be transferred through PMT-09 to the cash ledger of a distinct person, that is, another GSTIN registered on the same PAN in the same or another state. SGST balances cannot be moved across states in this manner. The transfer is not permitted if the transferring GSTIN has any unpaid liability standing in its electronic liability register. Multi-state businesses headquartered in Chepauk use this to shift idle deposits to the branch that actually needs the cash, avoiding fresh working capital outflow.
What is the GST rate on a works contract for a commercial building?
Under GST, a works contract relating to immovable property is treated wholly as a supply of services, and the standard rate is 18 percent on the contract value, with the contractor eligible for input tax credit on cement, steel and other inputs. This applies to construction, fabrication, erection, repair and renovation contracts for factories, offices and commercial buildings. The old VAT-plus-service-tax splitting of material and labour is gone; one rate applies to the whole consideration. Contractors should also note that free-issue materials supplied by the client can affect valuation, so contract drafting deserves attention before quoting.
How do I file Form PMT-09 to move money between heads in my cash ledger?
Log in and open Services, then Ledgers, then Electronic Cash Ledger, and select File GST PMT-09 for transfer of amount. The screen shows your balance under each major and minor head. Choose the transfer-from head and amount, choose the transfer-to head, add the details to the table, preview and file with DSC or EVC. The transfer reflects in the ledger immediately and an ARN is generated for your records. There is no limit on how often PMT-09 can be filed, and no government fee applies, so it is always the first fix for a wrong-head deposit.
Is there a GST consultant near Chepauk for new gst registration?
Yes. We serve Chepauk and the surrounding areas from our office at Porur, Chennai - 600 116, Tamil Nadu, and most GST registration work is completed online — you send documents on WhatsApp and we handle the portal work. If you prefer in-person help, we offer doorstep document pickup across Chepauk and you are welcome to visit our office. Reach us on +91 - 9600 606 444 between 9 AM and 8 PM, Monday to Saturday.
What is the process for new GST registration?
The process runs in clear stages: Document collection; Application preparation; Filing and Aadhaar authentication; Query handling. A senior consultant reviews your file at each stage rather than passing it to a data-entry desk, and you receive a confirmation with the filed documents once it is complete. You always know which stage your work is at — we update you on WhatsApp instead of leaving you to follow up.
Are there any hidden charges for new GST registration?
No. The fee quoted before we start is the fee you pay. Government fees, portal charges or statutory late fees, where they apply, are separate and disclosed to you in advance with the exact amount. We issue a proper GST invoice for our professional fee. If the scope of work changes — for example, an unexpected notice or additional periods — we tell you the revised fee before doing anything further.
