Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Egmore

Egmore's economy runs on its railway terminus: hotels and lodges on Gandhi Irwin Road and Kennet Lane, restaurants, travel operators and medical suppliers around the Government Museum and Pantheon Road. Hospitality operators here wrestle with GST rate slabs on room tariffs, restaurant supplies without input credit, and TCS reconciliation on bookings received through e-commerce travel platforms. For businesses here, staying on the right side of GST is not optional — buyers check compliance, and the department's systems match every return. Our firm provides E-Way Bill Registration & Support to clients across Egmore and neighbouring Chetpet and Vepery, combining Chennai jurisdiction familiarity with disciplined deadline tracking. Whether you run a shop, a service practice or a growing trading concern, we handle the portal work so you can stay focused on the business itself.

GST jurisdiction for Egmore (PIN 600008): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai North Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Egmore before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for Hospitals and Clinics in Egmore
Healthcare services by clinical establishments and doctors are exempt, but a clinic in Egmore rarely earns exempt income alone. Pharmacy sales to outpatients, implants billed separately, and cosmetic or aesthetic procedures undertaken for appearance rather than treatment are all taxable, and room charges above Rs.5,000 per day for non-ICU rooms attract 5 percent without credit. Exempt receipts still count towards aggregate turnover, so a hospital with a busy pharmacy can need registration despite mostly exempt revenue. A specialist separates the taxable streams, applies Rule 42 reversals on common expenses like housekeeping and equipment maintenance, and keeps the exemption for core treatment intact.
Urgent E-Way Bill Registration & Support in Egmore is handled on priority — expiring deadlines, suspended registrations and notice replies are taken up the same working day, with fixed professional fees starting at Rs.999.
Why Us

Why Egmore Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

✓

Fast, Clean Registrations and Amendments

New GSTIN applications, core field amendments through REG-14, additional places of business — we prepare complete, query-resistant applications the first time. Clean paperwork is the difference between smooth approval and weeks lost answering clarification memos from the department.

✓

Correct HSN Codes and Rates, Verified

GSTR-1 requires four-digit HSN reporting for turnover up to Rs.5 crore and six digits above it, and a wrong code often means a wrong rate. We verify the classification of what you actually supply, so your invoices and returns rest on defensible codes.

✓

Deadline Tracking Done for You

GSTR-1 by the 11th, GSTR-3B by the 20th, CMP-08 by the 18th after each quarter — we maintain a compliance calendar for every client and start chasing your data well before the due date, so late fees never enter the picture.

✓

A Real Local Office You Can Walk Into

We are a Chennai firm with a physical office, not a faceless portal. If you prefer to sit across a table with your papers, you are welcome. Clients from Egmore regularly visit us for registrations, notice discussions and annual return reviews.

✓

Handholding for First-Time Registrants

A new GSTIN comes with obligations nobody explains at approval — the invoice series rules, displaying the registration certificate and GSTIN at your premises, and the first return cycle. We walk new registrants in Egmore through each of these so month one starts correctly.

✓

WhatsApp Updates at Every Stage

You receive a WhatsApp message when documents are received, when the draft is ready for your approval, and when the return or application is filed, along with the acknowledgement. You never have to call and ask what is happening with your file.

How It Works

Our E-Way Bill Process

Portal registration

We register your GSTIN on the e-way bill portal using the OTP sent to your registered mobile, and set secure login credentials for your business.

Master data setup

Products with HSN codes, regular customers, suppliers and transporters are added as masters so daily e-way bill generation takes minutes rather than repeated data entry.

Team training

Your dispatch staff learn to fill Part A and Part B, compute validity by distance, extend validity when transit is delayed, and cancel bills within twenty-four hours.

Process documentation

We give you a simple checklist covering when an e-way bill is needed, exemptions, documents the driver must carry, and what to do at an interception.

Ongoing support

For the first month we remain available on WhatsApp for generation help, rejected entries and practical situations like vehicle breakdown or transhipment en route.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

★

Smooth Scheme Transitions

Whether moving between composition and regular scheme, opting into QRMP, or crossing the e-invoice threshold at Rs.5 crore, transitions are planned in advance rather than discovered after a compliance breach.

★

Better Cash Flow Planning

You know your expected GST outflow days before the 20th, not on the night of filing. That advance visibility lets you plan payments, collections and bank balances instead of scrambling for funds at the deadline.

★

Goods That Move Without Detention

Correct e-way bills matched to correct invoices mean your consignments clear roadside inspections cleanly, avoiding detention proceedings whose penalties can far exceed the tax on the goods being carried.

★

Fewer Errors at the Billing Counter

Your billing staff are guided on invoice fields, rates and series discipline, so mistakes are prevented where they originate — at the counter — instead of being repaired later in the returns.

★

Supplier Risk Caught Early

We spot suppliers who stop uploading invoices or filing returns and alert you before their default becomes your blocked credit, letting you recover amounts or switch vendors while the exposure is still small.

★

Marketplace Accounts That Stay Live

E-commerce platforms continuously validate seller GSTINs and filing status. A consistently compliant registration keeps your listings active and settlements flowing, with no sudden suspension of your online sales channel.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Keeping up with changesRate changes, portal updates and new thresholds such as the Rs.5 crore e-invoice limit are tracked by us and applied to your case proactively.Changes are discovered after the fact — often through a rejected filing, a blocked e-way bill or a departmental letter.
Due-date trackingA maintained compliance calendar with internal cut-offs days before the 11th and the 20th; we chase you for data, not the other way around.Deadlines remembered from memory or phone alarms; one busy week and the return slips past the due date.
Portal credentials and dataLogins handled by a small engaged team under strict confidentiality, with credentials stored securely and never passed onward.Passwords circulating on chats with freelancers and part-timers, and no accountability for who has accessed your business data.
Registration and amendmentsQuery-resistant applications prepared correctly the first time, with supporting documents matched to what proper officers actually verify.Repeated clarification memos and resubmissions, with weeks lost because a rent agreement or premises photograph did not meet expectations.
Goods in transitE-way bills generated correctly and matched to invoices, so consignments pass roadside inspections without detention or penalty.A defective or missing e-way bill can mean detention at a checkpoint, with penalties that dwarf the tax on the consignment.
Refund claimsRFD-01 filed with complete statements and annexures, tracked from ARN to bank credit, with any deficiency memo answered promptly.Incomplete claims bounce back as deficiency memos while the refund sits unclaimed for months and working capital stays blocked.

GST Council

Council clears entire pending GST compensation dues to states

49th GST Council Meeting, New Delhi — 18 February 2023 · 2023-02-18

The 49th GST Council meeting decided to clear the entire balance of GST compensation dues to states, with the Centre releasing Rs 16,982 crore for June 2022 from its own resources pending cess collections. The Council also approved release of admissible final compensation to states that had furnished revenue figures certified by their Accountant General. This closed the five-year compensation window promised to states at the launch of GST, while cess collections continued to service the back-to-back loans taken during COVID.

Why this matters: Compensation cess on items like aerated drinks, coal and motor vehicles continued to apply to fund loan repayment, so businesses dealing in cess goods had to keep charging it.

AAR Ruling

Project management consultancy for a public water project held exempt

Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company Ltd - AAR Tamil Nadu, advance ruling reported at 2019 (2) TMI 187 · 2019

The Chennai company provided management consultancy and detailed project report services to the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board for water related projects. It asked whether the service attracted GST. The Authority held that the supply was a pure service with no supply of goods involved, rendered in relation to a function entrusted to a municipality, and was therefore exempt from GST under the entry covering pure services supplied to government and local authorities.

What it means for you: Chennai consultants on government water and civic projects should test the pure services exemption before adding GST to their invoices.

Case Law

Supreme Court treats State tax dues as a secured debt in insolvency proceedings

State Tax Officer v. Rainbow Papers Ltd — Supreme Court, judgment dated 06-09-2022 · 2022-09-06

The Supreme Court held that where a State tax statute creates a first charge on the assets of a defaulting dealer, the tax department qualifies as a secured creditor under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. A resolution plan that simply ignores statutory tax dues, or provides nil recovery to the State, can be rejected. The decision considerably strengthened the position of tax authorities in corporate insolvency resolution processes.

What to do about it: A Chennai company entering insolvency cannot assume its GST and VAT arrears will be wiped out; statutory dues must be properly dealt with in the resolution plan.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

What is the process for e-way bill registration & support?
The process runs in clear stages: Portal registration; Master data setup; Team training; Process documentation. A senior consultant reviews your file at each stage rather than passing it to a data-entry desk, and you receive a confirmation with the filed documents once it is complete. You always know which stage your work is at — we update you on WhatsApp instead of leaving you to follow up.
Are there any hidden charges for e-way bill registration & support?
No. The fee quoted before we start is the fee you pay. Government fees, portal charges or statutory late fees, where they apply, are separate and disclosed to you in advance with the exact amount. We issue a proper GST invoice for our professional fee. If the scope of work changes — for example, an unexpected notice or additional periods — we tell you the revised fee before doing anything further.
What happens if my goods are caught moving without a valid e-way bill?
The vehicle and goods can be detained under Section 129 of the CGST Act. Release requires payment of a penalty equal to two hundred percent of the tax payable on the goods where the owner comes forward, with harsher terms where ownership is not claimed; for exempted goods the penalty is two percent of the value up to Rs.25,000. The officer issues notices in the MOV series, and orders can be appealed in APL-01, currently with a twenty-five percent pre-deposit of the penalty for Section 129 cases. Prevention is far cheaper, so tighten dispatch checks or call +91 - 9600 606 444 if a vehicle in Egmore is detained.
My vehicle was stopped and detained by a GST squad. What is the process that follows?
Interception follows a defined MOV trail. The officer records a statement in MOV-01, orders physical verification in MOV-02, and completes an inspection report in MOV-04 within the prescribed time. If discrepancies are found, a detention order in MOV-06 issues along with a notice in MOV-07 stating the proposed penalty, which the law requires within seven days of detention. After hearing you, the officer passes the penalty order in MOV-09, uploading the demand in DRC-07, and must do so within seven days of the notice. Goods are released on payment through MOV-05. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 immediately if a vehicle from Egmore is held; timelines move fast.
What is confiscation under Section 130 and how is it different from detention?
Detention under Section 129 is temporary custody pending a penalty for a transit contravention. Confiscation under Section 130 is the graver step where the department alleges intent to evade tax, for instance supplying unaccounted goods, or using a conveyance for carrying goods in contravention with the owner's knowledge. Confiscated goods vest in the government, but the owner is given an option to pay a fine in lieu of confiscation up to the market value of the goods less the tax, in addition to tax and penalty. The conveyance owner can similarly redeem the vehicle by paying a fine equal to the tax payable on the goods carried.
Can the transporter get the truck released even if the penalty on the goods is unpaid?
Yes. Section 129(6) permits release of the conveyance alone on payment by the transporter of the penalty determined or Rs.1 lakh, whichever is less, so a lorry owner is not held hostage to a consignor's dispute. On the goods themselves, if the penalty is not paid within fifteen days of the MOV-09 order, the department can sell or dispose of the detained goods to recover the amount, and perishable or hazardous goods can be sold even earlier. Filing an appeal within the window, with the prescribed pre-deposit, is the lawful way to stall this. We assist transporters serving Egmore markets in exactly these situations.
How do I register my business on the e-way bill portal?
Go to ewaybillgst.gov.in, click Registration and then e-Way Bill Registration, and enter your GSTIN. The portal pulls your details from the GST database and sends an OTP to your registered mobile for verification, after which you create a username and password. The whole process takes about ten minutes if your GST registration details are current. You can then add sub-users for your billing staff at different locations, which is useful for businesses with multiple godowns around Egmore. ChennaiGST completes e-way bill registration and staff training for Rs.999; call +91 - 9600 606 444 if you want it handled for you.
How long does an e-way bill remain valid and how is the distance calculated?
Validity depends on distance: one day for every 200 kilometres or part thereof for normal cargo, and one day for every 20 kilometres for over-dimensional cargo. So a consignment from Chennai to Coimbatore at roughly 500 kilometres gets three days. Validity starts when Part B with the vehicle number is first entered, and each day runs to midnight of the following day. The portal auto-calculates distance from the PIN codes entered, and you may enter a distance up to ten percent more than the auto-computed figure. Plan dispatches so goods are not caught in transit on an expired bill.
My company finds Indian customers for a foreign software firm on commission. Is that an export?
No. Arranging or facilitating a supply between a foreign principal and its customers makes you an intermediary under Section 2(13) of the IGST Act. For intermediary services, Section 13(8)(b) fixes the place of supply at the supplier's own location, so the service is taxable at 18 percent in India even though the commission arrives in foreign exchange. By contrast, services you provide on your own account, such as writing code delivered to the foreign client, remain exports. Note that the GST Council in September 2025 recommended omitting Section 13(8)(b), which would let such intermediary services to foreign recipients qualify as exports once the legislative amendment is brought into force, so verify the current position before finalising treatment. Because contracts often mix both roles, we review agreements clause by clause for Egmore companies before deciding the tax treatment.
I sell combo packs, like a phone bundled with earbuds, at one price. Which GST rate applies to the bundle?
A bundle of items sold for a single price, which are not naturally bundled as a matter of trade, is a mixed supply under Section 8, and the entire price is taxed at the rate of the item carrying the highest rate in the pack. If instead you bill each item separately with its own price, each takes its own rate. Since phones and most accessories are all at 18%, many electronics combos are unaffected, but a grocery or gift hamper mixing 5% and 18% items at one price gets taxed wholly at 18%. Structure festival hampers and combos deliberately; call +91 - 9600 606 444 for guidance.
What are the GST rates on silver articles, diamonds and gold coins?
Silver and articles of silver, like gold, attract 3% GST, and so do gold and silver coins. Cut and polished diamonds attract 1.5%, while rough diamonds are taxed at 0.25%. Imitation jewellery attracts 3%. For a jewellery showroom this means the rate master must distinguish metal-based items at 3%, the diamond component where separately dealt with, and making charges at 5% when billed as a service. Precious metal rates were deliberately left untouched in the September 2025 rationalisation. If you also trade bullion between dealers, keep HSN-wise records clean, since bullion movements draw departmental attention. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 for guidance.
We pay for foreign software subscriptions and overseas consultants. Is GST payable in India?
Yes. Import of services, meaning services from a supplier located outside India received by a person in India for business, attracts IGST under reverse charge in the recipient's hands, payable in cash and claimable as ITC if eligible. This catches cloud software, foreign professional fees, overseas advertising and licence fees. Two nuances matter: services from a related foreign party, such as your parent company, are taxable even without consideration under Schedule I, and OIDAR services supplied to unregistered consumers are taxed in the foreign supplier's own hands, not under RCM. Startups and IT firms in Egmore paying by card frequently miss these entries; reconcile foreign remittances against RCM paid annually.
How do I round off tax amounts on a GST invoice?
Section 170 of the CGST Act prescribes normal rounding to the nearest rupee: where the tax contains a part of a rupee, fifty paise or more is rounded up to one rupee, and less than fifty paise is ignored. The rounding is applied to the tax amount on each invoice, separately for each tax head, so CGST and SGST are each rounded individually rather than rounding only the invoice total. Most billing software handles this automatically, but spreadsheets and manual bills often round the grand total instead, creating one-rupee mismatches that clutter reconciliations across thousands of invoices.
Which educational services are actually exempt from GST?
The exemption is confined to an educational institution as defined, meaning one providing pre-school education, education up to higher secondary school or equivalent, education as part of a curriculum for obtaining a qualification recognised by Indian law, or an approved vocational education course. Services by such institutions to their students, and specified input services to schools such as transport, catering and security, are exempt. Everything outside this boundary is taxable: private tuition, test preparation, hobby classes, skill courses without recognised certification, and training by ed-tech companies. The recognition of the qualification under Indian law is the decisive test, not the subject taught.
If I open a bulk bag and sell rice loose by weight, is that sale taxable?
No. The 5% levy on specified food items applies only when they are supplied in pre-packaged and labelled form in packs up to 25 kilograms. When a retailer opens bulk stock and weighs out loose quantities against each customer's order, the supply is not of a pre-packaged commodity, so it remains exempt. What you cannot do is sell an intact labelled retail pack and bill it as loose. Keep purchase records showing bulk procurement and maintain the loose counter separately from the packed shelf, because officers test this distinction during inspections of grocery businesses. When in doubt on a product, call +91 - 9600 606 444.
By when must I issue a tax invoice when I sell goods?
For goods, Section 31 requires the tax invoice to be issued before or at the time of removal of the goods, where the supply involves movement, or before or at the time of delivery or making the goods available in other cases. In simple terms, the invoice must travel with the goods; a lorry leaving your Egmore godown without an invoice is exposed to detention even if the e-way bill exists. For continuous supplies of goods with successive statements or payments, the invoice must be issued when each statement is issued or each payment is received.
Our security agency does not charge GST on its bills. Is that correct?
Quite possibly, yes. Since 1 January 2019, security services meaning supply of security personnel, when provided by any person other than a body corporate to a registered person, fall under reverse charge, so the agency correctly bills without tax and you pay 18 percent through GSTR-3B in cash, claiming ITC. If your security agency is a private limited company, however, RCM does not apply and it must charge GST on its invoice under forward charge. Composition taxpayers as recipients are excluded from this entry. Confirm the agency's constitution from its PAN, because paying under the wrong mechanism creates trouble for both sides.
Our company paid fees to a lawyer. Who pays the GST on this?
You do, as the recipient. Legal services supplied by an individual advocate, a firm of advocates or a senior advocate to a business entity are notified under Section 9(3), so the advocate does not charge GST and your business pays 18 percent under reverse charge in cash through GSTR-3B, claiming it back as ITC if otherwise eligible. Relief exists for small recipients: legal services to a business entity whose turnover is within the registration threshold are exempt. Since the advocate is usually unregistered, remember to raise a self-invoice and payment voucher for the transaction. Litigation-heavy businesses in Egmore should reconcile their legal expense ledger against RCM paid every quarter.
How much does e-way bill registration & support cost in Egmore?
Our fee for e-way bill registration & support in Egmore starts at Rs.999 and is quoted in full before we begin — there are no hidden charges added later. The fee covers professional work end to end: document review, preparation, filing and follow-up until completion. Government fees or portal charges, where applicable, are separate and always shown to you upfront. For an exact quote based on your turnover and business type, call +91 - 9600 606 444 and a consultant will confirm it on the call.
What documents are required for e-way bill registration & support in Egmore?
For e-way bill registration & support you will generally need: GST portal login credentials, GSTIN and registered mobile number for portal registration, Transporter details and transporter ID, if using regular carriers, Sample invoice and delivery challan formats, List of dispatch locations and godowns. The exact list depends on your constitution — proprietorship, partnership, LLP or company — and on the specifics of your case. Send what you have on WhatsApp to +91 - 9600 606 444 and we will confirm within the same working day exactly what else is needed, so nothing is rejected later for a missing paper.
How long does e-way bill registration & support take in Egmore?
Same day to 1 working day. That assumes your documents are complete and there is no departmental query. We start the same day we receive your papers and tell you the realistic completion date upfront rather than an optimistic one. Where the GST portal or the officer causes delay — clarifications, physical verification or system issues — we track it daily and keep you informed on WhatsApp.
