Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for NSK Salai, Kodambakkam

Every locality in Chennai has its own commercial rhythm, and Kodambakkam is no exception. Kodambakkam gave Kollywood its name, and film production houses, editing suites and event managers still work off Arcot Road and Rangarajapuram Main Road alongside dense neighbourhood retail. Media businesses here struggle with GST classification of production services, reverse charge on copyright payments to composers and artists, and input tax credit scattered across multi-location shoots and vendor invoices. Our practice has shaped its GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing work around exactly these realities, serving clients in Kodambakkam as well as T. Nagar and Vadapalani. Registrations, returns, refunds and notice replies are handled by one accountable team, with fees fixed in writing before work begins and every filing reconciled against portal data before it is submitted.

GST jurisdiction for Kodambakkam (PIN 600024): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai South Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Kodambakkam before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for Professional Services Firms in Kodambakkam
Professional firms bill at 18 percent, but the mechanics differ by profession: services of advocates to business entities are taxed in the client's hands under reverse charge, while chartered accountants, company secretaries and architects charge tax on their own invoices. Fees received in advance are taxable on receipt, and retainers must be invoiced within the time limits of Section 31(2). Amounts recovered from clients as a pure agent, such as government fees paid on their behalf, stay outside taxable value only if every condition of Rule 33 is met and documented. A specialist sets up retainer invoicing, pure agent documentation and branch cross-charges correctly; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to discuss your firm.
To get GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing in Kodambakkam, share your documents by WhatsApp or visit the office, approve the prepared draft, and the filing is completed on the GST portal from Rs.749.
Why Us

Why NSK Salai, Kodambakkam Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

✓

Transparent, Fixed Fees Quoted Upfront

You are told the full fee before we begin, in writing. No surprise additions for uploads, revisions or acknowledgements. Government fees and taxes, where applicable, are shown separately, so businesses in Kodambakkam always know exactly what the engagement costs them.

✓

Fast, Clean Registrations and Amendments

New GSTIN applications, core field amendments through REG-14, additional places of business — we prepare complete, query-resistant applications the first time. Clean paperwork is the difference between smooth approval and weeks lost answering clarification memos from the department.

✓

Refund and Export Experience That Shows

From filing the LUT in RFD-11 at the start of each financial year to preparing RFD-01 refund claims with complete annexures, we know what makes a refund file move. Exporters and inverted-duty businesses come to us specifically for this.

✓

Composition Scheme Compliance Without Slips

Composition dealers have their own rulebook — CMP-08 every quarter, GSTR-4 annually by 30 June, bills of supply instead of tax invoices, and a turnover ceiling that must be watched. We handle each of these correctly so the scheme's simplicity never turns into a violation.

✓

Familiar with Chennai Jurisdictions and Officers' Expectations

We work with Chennai GST ranges and circles every week, including the jurisdiction covering Kodambakkam. We know how local proper officers examine registrations, what supporting documents they routinely call for, and how to present a file so it moves without repeated queries.

✓

Job Work Movements Tracked Through ITC-04

Goods sent to job workers must move on delivery challans, return within the statutory period, and be reported in ITC-04. We track every outward and return leg for manufacturing clients in Kodambakkam, so inputs sent out for processing never quietly convert into a deemed supply carrying tax and interest.

How It Works

Our Monthly Returns Process

Monthly data collection

At month end we remind you and collect sales invoices, purchase bills and credit notes in whatever format you maintain, including Excel, Tally exports or scanned copies.

GSTR-1 preparation and filing

We prepare invoice-wise outward supply details, validate GSTINs of your B2B customers, summarise B2C supplies and file GSTR-1 on the portal before the 11th.

ITC reconciliation with GSTR-2B

We download your auto-drafted GSTR-2B, match it against purchase records, and claim only eligible input tax credit so that mismatches do not trigger scrutiny notices later.

Tax computation and confirmation

We compute net tax payable after ITC set-off, share the working with you for approval, and generate the payment challan for any cash liability.

GSTR-3B filing and reporting

After your confirmation and tax payment, we file GSTR-3B before the 20th and send you both filed acknowledgements along with a one-page summary of the month.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

★

Clarity on What You Actually Owe

Each period you receive a simple computation showing output tax, credit utilised and net cash payable, so GST becomes a number you understand and question rather than a figure you accept blindly.

★

Closure Without Loose Ends

When a business winds up, proper cancellation and a timely final return ensure the file is genuinely closed, so no demand or late-fee computation resurfaces against you long after the shutters came down.

★

Notices Answered Within the Time Limit

Statutory windows such as thirty days for an ASMT-11 reply are tracked from the day a notice arrives, so responses go in on time, complete, and with your best case properly presented.

★

Lower Total Cost of Compliance

A fixed professional fee is almost always cheaper than the combination of late fees, interest, lost credit and staff hours that informal, last-minute compliance quietly accumulates over a year.

★

Better Cash Flow Planning

You know your expected GST outflow days before the 20th, not on the night of filing. That advance visibility lets you plan payments, collections and bank balances instead of scrambling for funds at the deadline.

★

TDS and TCS Credits Converted to Cash

Amounts deducted by government buyers as GST TDS and by marketplaces as TCS are accepted on the portal each period, so money withheld against your GSTIN actually reaches your cash ledger instead of lying unclaimed.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Registration and amendmentsQuery-resistant applications prepared correctly the first time, with supporting documents matched to what proper officers actually verify.Repeated clarification memos and resubmissions, with weeks lost because a rent agreement or premises photograph did not meet expectations.
Refund claimsRFD-01 filed with complete statements and annexures, tracked from ARN to bank credit, with any deficiency memo answered promptly.Incomplete claims bounce back as deficiency memos while the refund sits unclaimed for months and working capital stays blocked.
Due-date trackingA maintained compliance calendar with internal cut-offs days before the 11th and the 20th; we chase you for data, not the other way around.Deadlines remembered from memory or phone alarms; one busy week and the return slips past the due date.
Time costRoughly an hour a month to send data and approve drafts; the portal work, reconciliation and follow-up are ours.Hours every month lost to portal errors, JSON files, OTP failures and reworking figures — usually on the due date itself.
Goods in transitE-way bills generated correctly and matched to invoices, so consignments pass roadside inspections without detention or penalty.A defective or missing e-way bill can mean detention at a checkpoint, with penalties that dwarf the tax on the consignment.
Portal credentials and dataLogins handled by a small engaged team under strict confidentiality, with credentials stored securely and never passed onward.Passwords circulating on chats with freelancers and part-timers, and no accountability for who has accessed your business data.

Law Update

GST Rulings and Notifications That Affect You — relevant to Kodambakkam businesses

GST law moves through notifications, circulars and court decisions. These are the ones changing how filings are prepared right now.

Circular

What the department must do before assessing a non-filer to best judgment

Circular No. 129/48/2019-GST dated 24 December 2019 · 2019-12-24

CBIC prescribed a uniform procedure for non-filers. A system-generated reminder goes out three days before the due date, followed by a notice in FORM GSTR-3A after the due date giving fifteen days to file. If the return is still not filed, the officer may assess the liability to the best of his judgment under section 62 and issue an order in FORM GST ASMT-13. That order is deemed withdrawn if the taxpayer files the valid return within thirty days of service.

How we apply it: An ASMT-13 best-judgment order is not the end; filing the missing return within the statutory window from service makes it fall away automatically.

GST Council

Group of Ministers formed on State cess for natural calamities

30th GST Council Meeting (video conference) — 28 September 2018 (PIB Release ID 1547891) · 2018-09-28

Meeting shortly after the Kerala floods, the Council discussed that State's proposal to impose a cess on SGST to fund rehabilitation and flood-related works. Because GST had removed the States' independent power to levy such a cess, the Council constituted a seven-member Group of Ministers convened by the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, with members from Assam, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab and Uttarakhand, to examine modalities for revenue mobilisation in case of natural calamities and disasters, reporting by 31 October 2018.

How we apply it: This process produced the Kerala flood cess of 2019, the only State-specific GST cess so far, and set the template for how any similar Tamil Nadu levy would have to be approved.

Case Law

Madras High Court: GST on apartment maintenance applies only to the amount exceeding Rs 7,500

Greenwood Owners Association v. Union of India — Madras High Court, 2021 · 2021-07-01

Resident welfare associations challenged the CBIC circular and AAR view that once monthly maintenance exceeds Rs 7,500 per member, GST applies on the entire amount. The Madras High Court held that the exemption operates up to Rs 7,500, and only the amount in excess of that threshold is taxable — the term 'up to' marks a clear slab. The circular's contrary interpretation was quashed as contrary to the exemption notification.

How we apply it: Chennai apartment associations collecting over Rs 7,500 per month per flat should charge GST only on the excess over Rs 7,500, relying on this jurisdictional ruling.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

What documents are required for GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing in Kodambakkam?
For GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing you will generally need: Sales invoices or sales register for the month, Purchase invoices or purchase register, Credit notes and debit notes issued during the month, GST portal login credentials, Bank statement for the period, if reconciliation is needed. The exact list depends on your constitution — proprietorship, partnership, LLP or company — and on the specifics of your case. Send what you have on WhatsApp to +91 - 9600 606 444 and we will confirm within the same working day exactly what else is needed, so nothing is rejected later for a missing paper.
Do you provide gst return filing for small businesses and proprietorships in Kodambakkam?
Yes. A large share of our clients in Kodambakkam are proprietors, small traders, shop owners, freelancers and family businesses rather than large companies. The fee of Rs.749/month and the process are the same regardless of size, and we explain the compliance position in plain language — in Tamil or English — so you understand what is being filed on your behalf and why.
When can I issue a GST credit note against my sales invoice?
Section 34 permits a credit note where the taxable value or tax charged in the invoice exceeds what is actually payable, where the goods are returned by the recipient, or where the goods or services are found deficient. The credit note references the original invoice, and reporting it in your GSTR-1 reduces your output tax liability for that period. It is the correct tool for sales returns, rate errors and quality claims. What a credit note cannot do is cancel an e-invoice after the twenty-four hour IRP window or rewrite history for a different customer; it must trace to a genuine adjustment on an identified invoice.
We hire security guards from an agency. Should they charge GST or should we pay it ourselves?
Check the agency's constitution. Since 1 January 2019, security services by way of supply of security personnel provided by any person other than a body corporate to a registered person fall under reverse charge, so your business pays the 18 percent directly and claims credit. If the agency is a body corporate, such as a private limited company, it charges GST under forward charge on its invoice. Recipients registered under the composition scheme are excluded from this reverse charge entry. Businesses in Kodambakkam commonly pay agencies' forward-charge invoices while also missing their own RCM cases, so an annual review of security and manpower bills is worthwhile.
My shop was closed for a month. Can I skip filing GST returns for that period?
No. Once you hold an active GSTIN, returns must be filed for every tax period regardless of business activity. If there were no sales and no purchases, you must file nil GSTR-1 and nil GSTR-3B for that month. Skipping creates a break in the sequential filing chain, blocks future returns, accumulates late fees and can eventually lead to suspension of registration. Nil returns take only minutes and can even be filed by SMS. If your business in Kodambakkam has periods of inactivity, ask us about our low-cost nil filing plan.
What is a B2C large invoice and what is the current threshold?
A B2C large invoice is an inter-state supply to an unregistered person exceeding the notified value threshold, which was reduced from Rs.2.5 lakh to Rs.1 lakh. Such invoices must be reported individually in Table 5 of GSTR-1 with the place of supply, instead of being merged into the consolidated B2C summary. The rule helps states track high-value consumer sales flowing across borders. If your Kodambakkam showroom occasionally bills an unregistered customer from another state above Rs.1 lakh, your billing and returns process must flag it for invoice-wise reporting, or GSTR-1 validations and later scrutiny will surface the gap.
Can I issue a single credit note against several invoices?
Yes. Since the amendment to Section 34 by the CGST (Amendment) Act, 2018, effective 1 February 2019, the law permits one or more credit notes to be issued against one or more tax invoices of a financial year. A distributor giving a season-end adjustment to a retailer can therefore issue one consolidated credit note covering dozens of invoices, rather than one note per bill. When reporting it in GSTR-1, the portal accepts credit notes without invoice-wise linking for this reason. Maintain a working annexed to the credit note listing the invoices covered, because in scrutiny the officer will ask you to establish the linkage and the arithmetic.
The portal auto-filled an interest amount in my GSTR-3B. Can I edit or dispute it?
The portal computes interest on delayed filings under Rule 88B and auto-populates it in Table 5.1 of the next period's GSTR-3B, with a break-up shown period-wise. The system value is based on your cash ledger debits and the days of delay, and while the field permits upward revision, reducing the system-computed figure will flag the return. If you believe the computation is wrong, for instance because a liability related to an earlier period was declared with correct interest already paid through DRC-03, pay what is correct and keep the working; the department can be satisfied later with the reconciliation. We verify these auto-computations for clients before every filing.
Who has to file the GSTR-9 annual return?
GSTR-9 is the annual return for regular taxpayers, consolidating the outward supplies, input tax credit and tax paid reported through the year's GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings. As per CBIC notifications, filing is optional for taxpayers with aggregate turnover up to Rs.2 crore for the relevant financial year, and mandatory above that. Composition taxpayers file GSTR-4 instead, and e-commerce operators collecting TCS under Section 52 file GSTR-9B. Even where optional, filing GSTR-9 is often advisable because it locks your annual position before any departmental scrutiny. We prepare GSTR-9 for businesses across Kodambakkam every year.
My supplier has not uploaded an invoice and it is missing from GSTR-2B. Can I still claim the ITC?
No, not until it appears. Since 1 January 2022, Section 16(2)(aa) permits ITC only on invoices furnished by the supplier in GSTR-1 and communicated to you in GSTR-2B; the earlier provisional credit tolerance is gone. Claiming credit on a missing invoice invites a Rule 88D intimation and reversal with interest at 18 percent. The practical remedy is vendor follow-up: withhold the tax portion of payment until the supplier uploads, and claim the credit in the month it appears in GSTR-2B, subject to the overall time limit of 30 November following the financial year. Vendor discipline clauses in purchase orders help enormously.
I am selling old machinery on which ITC was claimed. Do I have to pay anything back?
Yes. Under Section 18(6) read with Rule 44, on supply of capital goods on which credit was taken, you must pay the higher of two amounts: the ITC originally availed reduced by five percent per quarter or part thereof from the invoice date, or the tax on the transaction value of the sale. For example, machinery held for three full years has its credit reduced by sixty percent, and you compare the remaining forty percent with the actual tax on the sale price. Refractory bricks, moulds, dies, jigs and fixtures sold as scrap need tax only on transaction value. Compute both figures before invoicing the buyer.
What are the most common mistakes Chennai businesses make with GST refunds and ITC?
The recurring ones we see across Kodambakkam are: missing the two-year limitation for RFD-01, mismatches between GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and shipping bill data that stall export refunds, forgetting the April LUT renewal, claiming ITC on invoices absent from GSTR-2B, ignoring blocked credits under Section 17(5), breaching the 180-day supplier payment rule, and treating deficiency memos as rejections instead of refiling within limitation. Each of these is preventable with a simple monthly checklist and a year-end reconciliation. ChennaiGST builds exactly this discipline into its retainer engagements; call +91 - 9600 606 444 if any of these sounds familiar.
Which food items became completely tax-free under GST 2.0?
From 22 September 2025, UHT milk, pre-packaged and labelled paneer and chena, and all Indian breads including roti, chapati, paratha and khakhra attract nil GST. In the pharma space, thirty-three notified lifesaving drugs and medicines for cancer and rare diseases also moved to nil rate. Remember that selling nil-rated goods still has compliance effects: you issue a bill of supply instead of a tax invoice for such items, and input tax credit attributable to nil-rated supplies must be reversed proportionately under Rules 42 and 43. Grocery retailers in Kodambakkam commonly need help splitting mixed billing correctly.
How do I document free samples and gifts given to customers?
Goods supplied genuinely free of cost to unrelated persons are not a supply, so no tax invoice is raised and no GST is charged; the movement is covered by a delivery challan marked as free samples. The cost is that input tax credit on those goods must be reversed. Two traps deserve care: gifts to related persons or between distinct GSTINs of the same PAN are taxable under Schedule I even without consideration, and promotional schemes like buy one get one are treated as a single price for two items, taxed normally with credit intact. Structure your Kodambakkam promotions with this distinction in mind.
What are the common types of GST notices a business can receive?
The frequent ones are: REG-03 seeking clarification on a registration application; GSTR-3A for non-filing of returns; ASMT-10 pointing out discrepancies found on scrutiny of returns; DRC-01A intimating an ascertained tax liability before formal proceedings; DRC-01, the show cause notice under Section 73 or 74; ADT-01 intimating a departmental audit; REG-17 proposing cancellation of registration; RFD-08 proposing rejection of a refund claim; and summons under Section 70. Each has its own reply form and deadline, ranging from seven working days to thirty days, so identifying the notice type correctly is the first step in responding. When in doubt, call +91 - 9600 606 444.
How do I track the status of a grievance ticket or any ARN I have on the GST portal?
For grievance tickets, open selfservice.gstsystem.in and use Check Status by entering the ticket reference number; the screen shows whether it is open, under processing or resolved, with the resolution comments. For applications filed on the main portal, log in and use Services, then Track Application Status, choosing the module and entering the ARN, or open My Applications to see every application with its case detail folder, notices and replies in one place. Diarise every ARN the day it is generated, because reply windows run from portal timestamps. ChennaiGST maintains an ARN tracker for every client engagement.
What is self-invoicing under RCM and is there a time limit for it?
When you receive supplies liable to reverse charge from an unregistered supplier, Section 31(3)(f) requires you, the recipient, to issue an invoice on yourself, because the supplier cannot issue a tax invoice. You must also issue a payment voucher when paying the supplier. From 1 November 2024, Rule 47A prescribes a firm deadline: the self-invoice must be issued within thirty days of receiving the supply. This document is not a formality; the time limit for claiming the RCM credit is reckoned from the self-invoice, and its absence can cost you the credit besides inviting penalty. Maintain a monthly self-invoice series covering rent, freight, legal fees and similar unregistered-supplier heads.
I hold stock purchased before the September 2025 rate cuts at higher tax rates. What happens when I sell it now?
You charge the rate in force on the date of supply, so goods sold on or after 22 September 2025 carry the new lower rate even if you bought them when the rate was 12% or 28%. The input tax credit you took at the old, higher rate remains fully intact in your credit ledger and is not restricted merely because output is now taxed lower; it simply sets off across your overall liability. No stock declaration was required for this transition. What traders in Kodambakkam must avoid is selling old-MRP stock at prices that ignore the tax cut without reviewing pricing. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 for a transition check.
Do you provide GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing for businesses on NSK Salai?
Yes. We serve businesses on and around NSK Salai in Kodambakkam — shops, offices, godowns and home-run businesses alike. Document pickup can be arranged at your premises, or you can send everything on WhatsApp and complete monthly returns without leaving your counter. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 and mention your location; a consultant will confirm the fee and timeline immediately.
What is the process for GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing?
The process runs in clear stages: Monthly data collection; GSTR-1 preparation and filing; ITC reconciliation with GSTR-2B; Tax computation and confirmation. A senior consultant reviews your file at each stage rather than passing it to a data-entry desk, and you receive a confirmation with the filed documents once it is complete. You always know which stage your work is at — we update you on WhatsApp instead of leaving you to follow up.
Can I get GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing done online without visiting the office?
Yes, the entire process can be handled online. You share scanned documents on WhatsApp or email, we prepare and file everything on the GST portal, and you receive the acknowledgement and filed copies digitally. Businesses in Kodambakkam regularly complete monthly returns with us without a single office visit. If a physical verification or personal hearing is required by the department, we guide you through it.
