Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for ELCOT SEZ, Sholinganallur

GST does not distinguish between a large showroom and a small service unit — the due dates and matching systems apply equally to both. Sholinganallur is the OMR IT corridor's signal hub, home to ELCOT SEZ campuses of major IT companies plus PG accommodations, cloud kitchens and builders along Medavakkam-Sholinganallur Main Road. SEZ-focused exporters must keep LUTs current each financial year for zero-rated billing, and landlords letting to IT staff must separate exempt residential from taxable commercial rental income. That is why our New GST Registration engagements in Sholinganallur follow the same discipline whatever the client's size: written checklists, reconciliation before filing and every acknowledgement archived. Businesses from Navalur and Medavakkam run on the same process, entirely over WhatsApp if they prefer.

GST jurisdiction for Sholinganallur (PIN 600119): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai South Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Sholinganallur before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for IT and SaaS Companies in Sholinganallur
IT and SaaS services are taxed at 18 percent domestically, but the real complexity is qualifying overseas billing as export under Section 2(6) of the IGST Act: the recipient must be outside India, consideration must arrive in convertible foreign exchange or INR where RBI permits, and the Indian entity and foreign recipient must not be mere establishments of the same person. Marketing or support arms serving a foreign parent risk classification as intermediaries under Section 13(8), making the place of supply India and the income taxable. Supplies to SEZ units are zero-rated with proper endorsements. A specialist structures contracts and invoicing so export status survives departmental scrutiny.
Yes, professional New GST Registration is available in Sholinganallur starting at Rs.1,499. The process is handled end to end — documents over WhatsApp, senior-reviewed preparation, portal filing and same-day acknowledgement sharing.
Why Us

Why ELCOT SEZ, Sholinganallur Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

Complete Documentation, Properly Archived

Every acknowledgement, challan, computation sheet and filed return is saved and shared with you in an organised folder. When a bank, buyer or GST officer asks for a document from two years ago, it reaches you the same day without any scrambling.

Multi-GSTIN and Branch Coordination

Businesses with registrations in more than one State, or multiple branches under one PAN, face cross-charge, stock transfer and input service distribution questions that single-GSTIN firms never see. We keep all your registrations consistent with each other, not just compliant individually.

Cancelled GSTIN? We Handle Revocation Too

A registration cancelled for non-filing is not the end of the road. We bring the pending returns up to date, clear the dues and file the revocation application in REG-21 within the permitted window, restoring suspended and cancelled GSTINs to active status.

Ledger Housekeeping on the Portal

Your cash ledger, credit ledger and liability register are reviewed regularly, not just at filing time. Excess balances are flagged for use or refund, and where a genuine slip surfaces, a voluntary payment through DRC-03 settles it before it can mature into a notice.

Transparent, Fixed Fees Quoted Upfront

You are told the full fee before we begin, in writing. No surprise additions for uploads, revisions or acknowledgements. Government fees and taxes, where applicable, are shown separately, so businesses in Sholinganallur always know exactly what the engagement costs them.

Composition Scheme Compliance Without Slips

Composition dealers have their own rulebook — CMP-08 every quarter, GSTR-4 annually by 30 June, bills of supply instead of tax invoices, and a turnover ceiling that must be watched. We handle each of these correctly so the scheme's simplicity never turns into a violation.

How It Works

Our GST Registration Process

Document collection

You share PAN, Aadhaar, photographs, address proof and bank details over WhatsApp or email. We review each document against portal requirements and flag anything that could trigger an officer query.

Application preparation

We draft Form GST REG-01 with the correct business constitution, principal place of business, HSN or SAC codes and authorised signatory details, then share a summary for your confirmation.

Filing and Aadhaar authentication

The application is filed on the GST portal and we guide the authorised signatory through Aadhaar OTP authentication, which speeds up approval and usually avoids physical verification of premises.

Query handling

We track the ARN daily. If the officer issues a notice in Form REG-03 seeking clarification, we draft and file the reply in Form REG-04 within the permitted time.

GSTIN delivery and handover

Once approved, we download your registration certificate in Form REG-06, help set up portal login credentials, and brief you on invoice format, return due dates and e-way bill obligations.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

Supplier Risk Caught Early

We spot suppliers who stop uploading invoices or filing returns and alert you before their default becomes your blocked credit, letting you recover amounts or switch vendors while the exposure is still small.

Better Cash Flow Planning

You know your expected GST outflow days before the 20th, not on the night of filing. That advance visibility lets you plan payments, collections and bank balances instead of scrambling for funds at the deadline.

Growth Without Compliance Anxiety

New branches, new product lines and interstate sales all carry GST consequences. With standing professional support, you expand knowing registrations, invoicing and returns will keep pace with the business.

Advances Treated Correctly

Advances received for services attract GST on receipt while advances for goods generally do not; applying this distinction correctly means you neither prepay tax unnecessarily nor omit a liability that surfaces later with interest.

Notices Answered Within the Time Limit

Statutory windows such as thirty days for an ASMT-11 reply are tracked from the day a notice arrives, so responses go in on time, complete, and with your best case properly presented.

A Written Trail for Every Decision

Tax positions, rate choices and credit calls are documented as they are made, so if a question arises years later, the reasoning and evidence are on file rather than in someone's fading memory.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Risk of noticesGSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B reconciled before filing, removing the mismatches that trigger most scrutiny notices.Inconsistent figures across returns quietly build a mismatch history that surfaces later as ASMT-10 scrutiny or a demand notice.
Goods in transitE-way bills generated correctly and matched to invoices, so consignments pass roadside inspections without detention or penalty.A defective or missing e-way bill can mean detention at a checkpoint, with penalties that dwarf the tax on the consignment.
Registration and amendmentsQuery-resistant applications prepared correctly the first time, with supporting documents matched to what proper officers actually verify.Repeated clarification memos and resubmissions, with weeks lost because a rent agreement or premises photograph did not meet expectations.
Refund claimsRFD-01 filed with complete statements and annexures, tracked from ARN to bank credit, with any deficiency memo answered promptly.Incomplete claims bounce back as deficiency memos while the refund sits unclaimed for months and working capital stays blocked.
Time costRoughly an hour a month to send data and approve drafts; the portal work, reconciliation and follow-up are ours.Hours every month lost to portal errors, JSON files, OTP failures and reworking figures — usually on the due date itself.
Keeping up with changesRate changes, portal updates and new thresholds such as the Rs.5 crore e-invoice limit are tracked by us and applied to your case proactively.Changes are discovered after the fact — often through a rejected filing, a blocked e-way bill or a departmental letter.
Case Law & Notifications

What the Department and the Courts Have Said — relevant to Sholinganallur businesses

We track every notification, circular and judgment that changes a filing position, so your returns and replies reflect the current law.

Notification

No registration needed if your buyer pays all the tax under reverse charge

Notification No. 05/2017-Central Tax dated 19.06.2017 · 2017-06-19

This notification exempts from obtaining registration those persons who supply only goods or services on which the entire tax is payable by the recipient under reverse charge in terms of section 9(3) of the CGST Act. Typical beneficiaries are small goods transport agencies, individual advocates, and persons supplying only notified reverse charge items, because the recipient discharges the tax and the supplier has no output liability to report.

What to do about it: A Chennai transporter or advocate whose entire turnover is covered by reverse charge need not take GST registration, however genuinely mixed turnover destroys this exemption.

Case Law

No profit motive does not exempt a charitable trust from GST registration

Nagri Eye Research Foundation v. Union of India — Gujarat High Court, Special Civil Application No. 7822 of 2021, judgment dated 9 July 2021 · 2021-07-09

A charitable trust ran a medical store attached to its hospital, selling medicines at a discount, and argued that as it worked without profit motive it was not carrying on business and needed no registration. The High Court held that the sale of medicines is a supply of goods, and that the absence of a profit motive does not take the activity outside the definition of business under the CGST Act. The trust was therefore required to obtain registration once the threshold was crossed.

How we apply it: Trusts, societies and associations in Chennai cannot assume that having no profit motive means no GST — registration turns on the supply, not the motive.

GST Council

The 28 per cent slab pruned from 224 headings to about 50 items

23rd GST Council Meeting, Guwahati — 10 November 2017 (PIB Release ID 1509037) · 2017-11-10

The Council recommended reducing the GST rate from 28 to 18 per cent on goods falling in 178 headings at the four-digit level, including four headings only partially pruned, so that the 28 per cent list fell from 224 tariff headings to only about 50. Further reductions were recommended from 28 to 12 per cent, from 18 to 12 per cent and from 18 to 5 per cent on specified goods, together with relief for the aviation and handicraft sectors and restaurants.

What to do about it: This is the single largest rate rationalisation of the early GST years and reset the price and credit position for most Chennai consumer goods dealers overnight.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

Can I get new GST registration done online without visiting the office?
Yes, the entire process can be handled online. You share scanned documents on WhatsApp or email, we prepare and file everything on the GST portal, and you receive the acknowledgement and filed copies digitally. Businesses in Sholinganallur regularly complete GST registration with us without a single office visit. If a physical verification or personal hearing is required by the department, we guide you through it.
How much does new GST registration cost in Sholinganallur?
Our fee for new GST registration in Sholinganallur starts at Rs.1,499 and is quoted in full before we begin — there are no hidden charges added later. The fee covers professional work end to end: document review, preparation, filing and follow-up until completion. Government fees or portal charges, where applicable, are separate and always shown to you upfront. For an exact quote based on your turnover and business type, call +91 - 9600 606 444 and a consultant will confirm it on the call.
Is PAN compulsory for GST? Do I need separate GSTINs for different states?
Yes, PAN is mandatory for normal GST registration; the GSTIN itself embeds your PAN in characters three to twelve, with the first two digits denoting the state, which is 33 for Tamil Nadu. Registration is state-wise, so if you have a fixed place of business in Tamil Nadu and another in Karnataka, you need a separate GSTIN in each state under the same PAN. Merely selling to customers in other states does not require registration there; it is having an establishment in that state that triggers it. Within Tamil Nadu, you may also take separate registrations for distinct places of business.
Does a coaching centre in Sholinganallur have to charge GST on its fees?
Yes, once registration is required. Commercial coaching and training, including NEET, JEE, banking and UPSC preparation, is taxable at 18 percent; the education exemptions cover only specified institutions, not private coaching. A coaching centre must register when aggregate fee collections cross Rs.20 lakh in a financial year, and within thirty days of crossing it. Fees collected in advance for a full course also attract tax at the time of receipt, which surprises many institutes during their first year. Our team registers coaching institutes across Sholinganallur and sets up their invoicing correctly from day one; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to begin.
Is Aadhaar authentication compulsory for GST registration?
Aadhaar authentication is not compulsory, but it is strongly recommended. When the promoter and authorised signatory complete Aadhaar OTP authentication, the application is processed on the fast track and deemed approval applies if the officer does not act within seven working days. Without Aadhaar authentication, the department treats the application as higher risk, physical verification of the business premises is usually ordered, and approval can take up to thirty days. Most applicants in Sholinganallur finish the OTP step in minutes, so there is rarely a reason to skip it unless the Aadhaar-linked mobile number is inactive.
I run a boutique in Sholinganallur doing tailoring and also selling dress materials. How is GST charged?
Tailoring service attracts a concessional GST rate of 5%. The dress materials and fabrics you sell are goods at 5%, and readymade pieces follow the Rs.2,500 threshold, with 5% up to that value and 18% above it. Because your boutique supplies both goods and services, the Rs.20 lakh service-supplier threshold governs when registration becomes mandatory, not the Rs.40 lakh goods limit. Bill stitching charges and material separately so each takes its correct rate and your turnover streams stay clean. Many boutiques in Sholinganallur register voluntarily to serve corporate and export orders; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to decide.
How do I apply for a new GST registration for my business in Sholinganallur?
GST registration is done online on the GST portal in two parts. In Part A of Form REG-01 you validate your PAN, mobile number and email to generate a Temporary Reference Number. In Part B you upload your business details, promoter details, principal place of business proof, bank details and photographs, then sign with EVC or DSC. On submission you receive an ARN to track status. If Aadhaar authentication succeeds and the application is complete, approval normally follows within about seven working days. Our team in Sholinganallur handles the entire filing end to end; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to get started.
I just received my GSTIN. What returns do I need to start filing?
From your first tax period, a regular taxpayer files GSTR-1, the outward supplies statement, by the 11th of the following month, and GSTR-3B, the summary return with tax payment, by the 20th. If your expected turnover is up to Rs.5 crore, you can opt for the QRMP scheme: returns become quarterly, GSTR-3B is due by the 22nd of the month after the quarter for Tamil Nadu, monthly tax is paid by challan, and the optional IFF by the 13th lets you pass credit to buyers monthly. Returns are mandatory even for nil turnover; the nil late fee is Rs.20 per day. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 and we will set up your filing calendar.
When is GSTR-1 due for my business in Sholinganallur?
GSTR-1, the statement of outward supplies, is due on the 11th of the following month for taxpayers filing monthly. If you have opted for the QRMP scheme, the quarterly GSTR-1 is due on the 13th of the month after the quarter ends. Filing on time matters because your invoices flow into your buyers' GSTR-2B, which decides their input tax credit. Our team in Sholinganallur tracks these dates for every client so nothing slips. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 if you need a filing reminder set up.
Medicines are sold at MRP. Do I add GST on top of the MRP at my medical shop?
No. MRP is the maximum retail price inclusive of all taxes, so you can never charge GST over and above it. Your invoice must instead work backwards from the price charged: for a medicine at 5%, the taxable value is the price divided by 1.05, with the balance shown as CGST and SGST. Billing software handles this automatically once items are mapped to correct rates. Charging tax above MRP invites consumer complaints under the Legal Metrology rules in addition to GST issues. Medical shops in Sholinganallur moving from manual billing should get the inclusive-tax configuration verified once; call +91 - 9600 606 444.
What are the GST rates on silver articles, diamonds and gold coins?
Silver and articles of silver, like gold, attract 3% GST, and so do gold and silver coins. Cut and polished diamonds attract 1.5%, while rough diamonds are taxed at 0.25%. Imitation jewellery attracts 3%. For a jewellery showroom this means the rate master must distinguish metal-based items at 3%, the diamond component where separately dealt with, and making charges at 5% when billed as a service. Precious metal rates were deliberately left untouched in the September 2025 rationalisation. If you also trade bullion between dealers, keep HSN-wise records clean, since bullion movements draw departmental attention. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 for guidance.
Are any goods exempt from GST when transported by a GTA?
Yes. Transport by a GTA of agricultural produce, milk, salt and foodgrains including flours and pulses, organic manure, newspapers and magazines registered with the Registrar of Newspapers, relief materials for victims of calamities, and defence or military equipment is exempt regardless of freight value. Note that the older exemptions for small consignments, Rs.1,500 for a full truckload and Rs.750 for a single consignee, were withdrawn with effect from 18 July 2022, so ordinary cargo enjoys no value-based relief now. Transporters serving agricultural markets should describe the produce accurately on the consignment note to support the exemption.
Which daily-use grocery items became cheaper under GST from September 2025?
The 56th GST Council's rationalisation, effective 22 September 2025, moved a large basket of daily essentials from 12% or 18% down to 5%, including butter, ghee, cheese, namkeens, sauces, pasta, chocolates, biscuits, cornflakes, hair oil, shampoo, soaps and toothpaste. UHT milk, pre-packaged paneer and all Indian breads such as roti, chapati and paratha became nil rated. Aerated and caffeinated beverages, by contrast, went to the 40% demerit rate. Grocery and supermarket billing masters needed a near-complete refresh from that date, and old stock is simply sold at the new rate applicable on the date of supply.
The GST rate on my product changed. Which rate applies to pending orders and invoices?
Section 14 of the CGST Act decides this by looking at three events: the date of supply, the date of invoice and the date of payment. Broadly, if any two of the three events fall after the rate change, the new rate applies; if two fall before, the old rate applies. So goods delivered in Sholinganallur before 22 September 2025 but invoiced and paid for afterwards attract the new rate, while goods delivered and invoiced earlier keep the old rate even if payment came later. Document dates carefully during any transition window, because officers test these invoices in scrutiny.
My customer in Mumbai asked me to deliver goods directly to his buyer in Sholinganallur. How do I bill this?
This is a bill-to ship-to transaction under Section 10(1)(b). When goods are delivered to a third party on the instruction of your customer, the law deems your customer's principal place of business as the place of supply, not the actual delivery point. So you invoice the Mumbai customer with IGST even though the goods physically moved within Tamil Nadu, and the Mumbai customer raises a second invoice on the ultimate recipient in Sholinganallur. Only one e-way bill is needed for the movement, generated by either party with both invoice legs captured. Wrongly billing the delivery-point state is a classic error that misplaces the credit chain entirely.
Should I claim a refund of my accumulated ITC or just carry it forward?
Carry-forward suits businesses whose future output tax will absorb the credit within a few months, since it avoids refund paperwork. A refund makes sense when the credit keeps growing and will never be absorbed, which is typical for exporters under LUT and businesses with inverted duty structure, because idle credit is interest-free money locked with the government. Remember that refunds are only available in categories permitted by Section 54; ordinary accumulated credit from slow sales cannot be refunded. A quick review of your credit ledger trend over six months usually makes the right answer obvious.
Is GST payable on hostel or paying guest accommodation in Sholinganallur?
A specific exemption effective 15 July 2024 covers accommodation services supplied at a value up to Rs.20,000 per person per month, provided the accommodation is supplied for a minimum continuous period of ninety days. Student hostels and working men's or women's PGs in Sholinganallur charging within this limit for long stays are therefore exempt. Where the monthly charge exceeds Rs.20,000, or the stay is shorter than ninety days, the supply is taxable like ordinary accommodation. Operators should maintain stay records and agreements evidencing the duration, because the ninety-day condition is what officers test first during verification.
Our security agency does not charge GST on its bills. Is that correct?
Quite possibly, yes. Since 1 January 2019, security services meaning supply of security personnel, when provided by any person other than a body corporate to a registered person, fall under reverse charge, so the agency correctly bills without tax and you pay 18 percent through GSTR-3B in cash, claiming ITC. If your security agency is a private limited company, however, RCM does not apply and it must charge GST on its invoice under forward charge. Composition taxpayers as recipients are excluded from this entry. Confirm the agency's constitution from its PAN, because paying under the wrong mechanism creates trouble for both sides.
What documents are required for new GST registration in Sholinganallur?
For new GST registration you will generally need: PAN card of the proprietor, firm or company, Aadhaar card of proprietor, partners or directors, Passport-size photograph of proprietor, partners or directors, Business address proof such as electricity bill or property tax receipt, Rent agreement and owner NOC if premises are rented. The exact list depends on your constitution — proprietorship, partnership, LLP or company — and on the specifics of your case. Send what you have on WhatsApp to +91 - 9600 606 444 and we will confirm within the same working day exactly what else is needed, so nothing is rejected later for a missing paper.
Do you provide new GST registration for businesses on ELCOT SEZ?
Yes. We serve businesses on and around ELCOT SEZ in Sholinganallur — shops, offices, godowns and home-run businesses alike. Document pickup can be arranged at your premises, or you can send everything on WhatsApp and complete GST registration without leaving your counter. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 and mention your location; a consultant will confirm the fee and timeline immediately.
What is the process for new GST registration?
The process runs in clear stages: Document collection; Application preparation; Filing and Aadhaar authentication; Query handling. A senior consultant reviews your file at each stage rather than passing it to a data-entry desk, and you receive a confirmation with the filed documents once it is complete. You always know which stage your work is at — we update you on WhatsApp instead of leaving you to follow up.
