Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Jayanthi Nagar, Kolathur

Every locality in Chennai has its own commercial rhythm, and Kolathur is no exception. Kolathur is India's best-known ornamental fish hub, with breeding farms and aquarium shops clustered off Red Hills Road near Retteri junction, alongside hardware stores and construction material suppliers serving fast-growing residential pockets like Poombuhar Nagar. Many fish breeders and online sellers cross the Rs.40 lakh goods threshold without realising it, making first-time registration and e-commerce reporting the local GST pain point. Our practice has shaped its GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing work around exactly these realities, serving clients in Kolathur as well as Villivakkam and Perambur. Registrations, returns, refunds and notice replies are handled by one accountable team, with fees fixed in writing before work begins and every filing reconciled against portal data before it is submitted.

GST jurisdiction for Kolathur (PIN 600099): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai North Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Kolathur before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for Builders and Contractors in Kolathur
Under-construction residential sales are taxed at 1 percent for affordable housing and 5 percent for other units, both without input credit, while commercial works contracts run at 18 percent with credit. Builders must procure at least 80 percent of inputs and input services from registered suppliers each year; any shortfall attracts tax under reverse charge, and cement bought from unregistered dealers is taxed under reverse charge at its full rate regardless of the shortfall test. Development rights and joint development agreements carry their own liability trigger points. A specialist runs the 80-20 computation annually and tracks reverse charge on cement and landowner area sharing so project costing stays accurate.
Yes, professional GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing is available in Kolathur starting at Rs.749. The process is handled end to end — documents over WhatsApp, senior-reviewed preparation, portal filing and same-day acknowledgement sharing.
Why Us

Why Jayanthi Nagar, Kolathur Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

Composition Scheme Compliance Without Slips

Composition dealers have their own rulebook — CMP-08 every quarter, GSTR-4 annually by 30 June, bills of supply instead of tax invoices, and a turnover ceiling that must be watched. We handle each of these correctly so the scheme's simplicity never turns into a violation.

E-Invoice and E-Way Bill Fluency

E-invoicing is mandatory once turnover crosses Rs.5 crore and e-way bills apply to goods movements above Rs.50,000. We set up, train and troubleshoot both systems, so your despatches from Kolathur are never held up by a compliance gap at the gate.

Clean Exits When a Business Closes

Winding up attracts its own GST obligations — the cancellation application, reversal of credit on closing stock, and the final return in GSTR-10 within three months. We close registrations properly so a business you shut in Kolathur never writes back to you as a demand years later.

A Real Local Office You Can Walk Into

We are a Chennai firm with a physical office, not a faceless portal. If you prefer to sit across a table with your papers, you are welcome. Clients from Kolathur regularly visit us for registrations, notice discussions and annual return reviews.

WhatsApp Updates at Every Stage

You receive a WhatsApp message when documents are received, when the draft is ready for your approval, and when the return or application is filed, along with the acknowledgement. You never have to call and ask what is happening with your file.

Job Work Movements Tracked Through ITC-04

Goods sent to job workers must move on delivery challans, return within the statutory period, and be reported in ITC-04. We track every outward and return leg for manufacturing clients in Kolathur, so inputs sent out for processing never quietly convert into a deemed supply carrying tax and interest.

How It Works

Our Monthly Returns Process

Monthly data collection

At month end we remind you and collect sales invoices, purchase bills and credit notes in whatever format you maintain, including Excel, Tally exports or scanned copies.

GSTR-1 preparation and filing

We prepare invoice-wise outward supply details, validate GSTINs of your B2B customers, summarise B2C supplies and file GSTR-1 on the portal before the 11th.

ITC reconciliation with GSTR-2B

We download your auto-drafted GSTR-2B, match it against purchase records, and claim only eligible input tax credit so that mismatches do not trigger scrutiny notices later.

Tax computation and confirmation

We compute net tax payable after ITC set-off, share the working with you for approval, and generate the payment challan for any cash liability.

GSTR-3B filing and reporting

After your confirmation and tax payment, we file GSTR-3B before the 20th and send you both filed acknowledgements along with a one-page summary of the month.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

Stronger Standing with Corporate Buyers

Large buyers check vendor GST compliance before releasing payments and renewing contracts. A clean filing record with timely GSTR-1 uploads keeps your invoices reflecting in their GSTR-2B and your payments unblocked.

A Written Trail for Every Decision

Tax positions, rate choices and credit calls are documented as they are made, so if a question arises years later, the reasoning and evidence are on file rather than in someone's fading memory.

Tax Paid Under the Right Head

Getting IGST versus CGST and SGST right at the invoice stage spares you the painful cycle of paying the correct head again and pursuing a refund of the amount paid under the wrong one.

Lower Total Cost of Compliance

A fixed professional fee is almost always cheaper than the combination of late fees, interest, lost credit and staff hours that informal, last-minute compliance quietly accumulates over a year.

TDS and TCS Credits Converted to Cash

Amounts deducted by government buyers as GST TDS and by marketplaces as TCS are accepted on the portal each period, so money withheld against your GSTIN actually reaches your cash ledger instead of lying unclaimed.

Annual Returns Without the Year-End Scramble

Because monthly data is reconciled as it happens, GSTR-9 preparation before the 31 December due date becomes a review exercise rather than a painful reconstruction of twelve untidy months.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Refund claimsRFD-01 filed with complete statements and annexures, tracked from ARN to bank credit, with any deficiency memo answered promptly.Incomplete claims bounce back as deficiency memos while the refund sits unclaimed for months and working capital stays blocked.
Registration and amendmentsQuery-resistant applications prepared correctly the first time, with supporting documents matched to what proper officers actually verify.Repeated clarification memos and resubmissions, with weeks lost because a rent agreement or premises photograph did not meet expectations.
Risk of noticesGSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B reconciled before filing, removing the mismatches that trigger most scrutiny notices.Inconsistent figures across returns quietly build a mismatch history that surfaces later as ASMT-10 scrutiny or a demand notice.
Record keepingEvery return, challan, acknowledgement and working paper archived in an organised folder, retrievable in minutes years later.Documents scattered across email, downloads and old phones; assembling records for a bank or an audit takes days.
Supplier defaultsSuppliers who stop uploading invoices are identified within the period and pursued before their default becomes your blocked credit.Missing supplier invoices surface only when credit is denied, by which time recovering the amount from the vendor is difficult.
Portal credentials and dataLogins handled by a small engaged team under strict confidentiality, with credentials stored securely and never passed onward.Passwords circulating on chats with freelancers and part-timers, and no accountability for who has accessed your business data.

Selected notifications, Council decisions and court rulings that practising consultants are applying to live cases.

GST Council

Council approves the principles of a single monthly return

27th GST Council Meeting (video conference) — 4 May 2018 (PIB Release ID 1531331) · 2018-05-04

Acting on the report of the Group of Ministers on IT simplification, the Council approved the design principles for a new return: one monthly return for all taxpayers except composition dealers and a few others, with staggered due dates by turnover; unidirectional flow of invoices uploaded by the seller at any time during the month, which would be the valid document for the buyer's credit; no requirement to upload purchase invoices; four-digit HSN for B2B invoices; and automatic computation of liability and credit.

How we apply it: The upload-lock-pay idea behind today's auto-populated GSTR-2B and GSTR-3B originates in these principles.

Circular

Credit is available where the place of supply of transport services is outside India

Circular No. 184/16/2022-GST · 2022-12-27

Where an Indian transporter supplies goods transport services to a registered Indian recipient but the destination of the goods is outside India, the proviso to Section 12(8) of the IGST Act fixed the place of supply outside India. The Board clarified that this remains an inter-State supply on which integrated tax is payable, that the supplier must report it correctly in GSTR-1, and that the Indian recipient is entitled to input tax credit. The proviso itself was later omitted with effect from 1 October 2023.

Practical effect: Chennai exporters and freight users should not reverse credit on such transport invoices for the period the proviso was in force.

AAR Ruling

Electronic toys attract 18 percent while other toys stay at 12 percent

Navbharat Imports - AAR Tamil Nadu, Advance Ruling No. 35/AAR/2021, dated 30 September 2021 · 2021-09-30

The importer sold a range of children's toys, some containing electronic circuits and some working purely mechanically. It asked for the correct rate on each. The Authority held that toys containing electronic components attract 18 percent under the residual entry for electronic toys, irrespective of how those components are used, so children's scooters and smart tricycles with lights and music are taxed at 18 percent, while toys that work without electronics remain at 12 percent.

What to do about it: Chennai toy traders must classify item by item, because a single electronic component moves a product from 12 to 18 percent.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

Are there any hidden charges for GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing?
No. The fee quoted before we start is the fee you pay. Government fees, portal charges or statutory late fees, where they apply, are separate and disclosed to you in advance with the exact amount. We issue a proper GST invoice for our professional fee. If the scope of work changes — for example, an unexpected notice or additional periods — we tell you the revised fee before doing anything further.
Do you provide gst return filing for small businesses and proprietorships in Kolathur?
Yes. A large share of our clients in Kolathur are proprietors, small traders, shop owners, freelancers and family businesses rather than large companies. The fee of Rs.749/month and the process are the same regardless of size, and we explain the compliance position in plain language — in Tamil or English — so you understand what is being filed on your behalf and why.
What documents do I need to give my GST consultant every month?
For monthly returns you need your sales invoices (or a sales register), purchase invoices, credit and debit notes, details of advances received for services, and any export or SEZ supply documents. If you use accounting software, an exported sales and purchase summary is enough. We then match your purchases against GSTR-2B on the portal before claiming input tax credit. Most clients in Kolathur simply share their data on WhatsApp or email by the 5th of each month and we handle the rest. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 to set up a simple monthly routine.
How should I raise invoices on foreign clients and report them in my returns?
You may invoice in foreign currency, but your GST records must state the value in rupees. An export invoice under LUT should carry the endorsement that the supply is meant for export under Letter of Undertaking without payment of integrated tax, along with your GSTIN, SAC code and the recipient's overseas address. In GSTR-1, these invoices go into Table 6A marked without payment of tax, and the turnover flows into GSTR-3B as zero-rated supplies. Match every invoice to a FIRC or bank credit. Our filing package for exporters in Kolathur includes this export documentation at Rs.749 per month.
Do I have to pay GST on my Adobe, Canva or AWS subscriptions billed from abroad?
If you are GST-registered and the foreign supplier has not charged Indian GST, yes. Services received from a supplier located outside India for business purposes are an import of services, taxable in your hands under reverse charge at 18 percent. You must pay the tax in cash through GSTR-3B, raise a self-invoice, and can simultaneously claim the same amount as input tax credit if the expense is otherwise eligible, making it cash-flow neutral for most businesses. Unregistered persons do not pay reverse charge; instead, the foreign provider may charge GST under the OIDAR rules. Many Kolathur agencies miss these entries during scrutiny.
What is a debit note under GST and when do I issue one?
You issue a debit note when the taxable value or tax charged in the original invoice was less than what is actually payable, for example a price escalation clause kicking in or a rate charged short. Declaring the debit note in GSTR-1 increases your output liability, payable with interest where the shortfall relates to an earlier period. There is no outer time limit on issuing a debit note itself. For your buyer, the debit note is a credit document: following the amendment to Section 16(4), the buyer's time limit to claim ITC runs from the date of the debit note, not the original invoice.
How does a GTA opt for forward charge, and by when must it be done?
The option is exercised by filing the Annexure V declaration on the GST portal. For an existing GTA, the window for a financial year runs from 1 January to 31 March of the preceding financial year, so the choice for the coming year must be locked in by 31 March. A newly registered GTA must file the declaration within forty-five days of applying for registration or one month from the date of obtaining registration, whichever is later. Once exercised, the option continues for future years automatically unless the GTA files Annexure VI to revert to reverse charge. Missing the window means remaining under the default reverse charge mechanism for the whole year.
What is the due date for GSTR-3B in Tamil Nadu?
For monthly filers, GSTR-3B is due on the 20th of the following month. If you are registered in Tamil Nadu and have opted for the QRMP scheme, your quarterly GSTR-3B is due on the 22nd of the month following the quarter. GSTR-3B is the summary return through which you actually pay tax, so missing it attracts a late fee of Rs.50 per day (Rs.20 for nil returns) plus interest at 18 percent per annum on tax paid late.
Should I choose QRMP or continue monthly filing?
It depends on your customer profile. QRMP means fewer returns and suits businesses selling mainly to consumers or unregistered buyers. However, if most customers are registered businesses, monthly GSTR-1 (or disciplined use of IFF) gets them input tax credit faster, which many corporate buyers insist on. Cash flow also matters: under QRMP you still pay monthly via PMT-06, so there is no tax deferral, only compliance simplification. We review turnover, buyer mix and working capital before recommending either route to businesses in Kolathur. A short call on +91 - 9600 606 444 is enough to decide.
My supplier issued a credit note against an earlier invoice. What must I do with the ITC?
When a supplier issues a credit note reducing the taxable value or tax, you must correspondingly reverse the proportionate ITC you had claimed on the original invoice, since the supplier's output liability reduces only when your credit reduces. The credit note flows into your GSTR-2B as a negative entry, and your GSTR-3B claim should net it off in the same period. With the Invoice Management System introduced on the portal from October 2024, you can accept, reject or keep pending supplier documents, and your action on a credit note directly shapes your GSTR-2B. Reconcile purchase returns, rate differences and discount credit notes monthly so reversals never lag behind.
My business had zero sales this month. Do I still need to file GST returns?
Yes. Every registered taxpayer must file returns for every tax period, even when there are no sales, no purchases and no tax liability. In that case you file nil GSTR-1 and nil GSTR-3B. Failure to file nil returns attracts a late fee of Rs.20 per day per return, capped at Rs.500 per return, and breaks the sequential filing chain. Prolonged non-filing can lead to suspension and eventually cancellation of your GSTIN. Our nil return plan for dormant businesses in Kolathur starts at just Rs.749 per month.
What is the difference between a GST credit note and a commercial credit note?
A GST credit note is issued under Section 34, is reported in GSTR-1, and reduces your output tax, with the buyer reversing equivalent input credit. A commercial or financial credit note adjusts only the money owed between the parties; it carries no GST, is not reported in returns, and leaves everyone's tax position untouched. Businesses use commercial credit notes when the 30 November deadline has passed, or for post-supply discounts that do not satisfy the statutory conditions for a tax adjustment. Choosing the wrong instrument is a frequent audit finding, so decide the type before the note is issued.
Can one document cover both taxable and exempt items sold together?
Yes, in one specific situation. Rule 46A permits a registered person supplying both taxable and exempt goods or services to an unregistered recipient to issue a single invoice-cum-bill of supply covering the entire transaction. This saves retail counters from splitting every mixed basket into two documents. The concession applies only when the buyer is unregistered; for a registered buyer, you must still issue a tax invoice for the taxable items and a separate bill of supply for the exempt items. Supermarkets and pharmacies with mixed inventories use this format daily, and billing software handles the split automatically once configured.
We sponsored a trade event. Does reverse charge apply to the sponsorship amount?
If your business is a body corporate or partnership firm, sponsorship services received are notified under Section 9(3) and you must pay 18 percent GST under reverse charge, with ITC available since sponsorship is a marketing expense. One recent change matters: with effect from 16 January 2025, sponsorship services provided by a body corporate were moved to forward charge, so if the event organiser billing you is a company, it now charges GST on its invoice and RCM does not apply. Where the provider is a proprietor, trust or society, RCM continues. Verify the organiser's constitution before booking the entry, and raise a self-invoice where the provider is unregistered.
What is the GST rate on a works contract for a commercial building?
Under GST, a works contract relating to immovable property is treated wholly as a supply of services, and the standard rate is 18 percent on the contract value, with the contractor eligible for input tax credit on cement, steel and other inputs. This applies to construction, fabrication, erection, repair and renovation contracts for factories, offices and commercial buildings. The old VAT-plus-service-tax splitting of material and labour is gone; one rate applies to the whole consideration. Contractors should also note that free-issue materials supplied by the client can affect valuation, so contract drafting deserves attention before quoting.
Why are so many businesses suddenly receiving GST notices these days?
Enforcement has shifted from manual selection to data analytics. The portal now automatically compares GSTR-1 with GSTR-3B and flags tax shortfalls through DRC-01B intimations under Rule 88C, and compares GSTR-2B with GSTR-3B to flag excess ITC through DRC-01C under Rule 88D. E-way bill, e-invoice, TDS and income tax data are also cross-matched, and limitation deadlines for older financial years have pushed departments to clear pending demands in batches. The practical lesson for Kolathur businesses is that mismatches no longer go unnoticed, so month-wise reconciliation before filing is now essential hygiene rather than a year-end exercise.
What is the penalty for running a business without GST registration?
A taxable person who is liable to register but fails to do so faces a penalty of Rs.10,000 or the amount of tax evaded, whichever is higher, under Section 122 of the CGST Act. Beyond the penalty, the department can demand the tax for the entire unregistered period with interest at 18 percent per annum, and you cannot recover that tax from customers you billed without GST. Goods moved without registration and e-way bills, required for consignments above Rs.50,000, also risk detention. If your turnover has crossed the threshold, registering within thirty days is far cheaper than regularising later.
Where is the place of supply for services connected to a building or land?
Services directly relating to immovable property, including those of architects, interior decorators, engineers, surveyors, construction and works contract services, renting, and accommodation in hotels, are supplied where the property is located, under Section 12(3). The recipient's location and registration are irrelevant. So a Kolathur architect designing a factory in Coimbatore charges CGST plus SGST of Tamil Nadu, but for a project in Kochi the place of supply is Kerala and IGST applies. For hotels, the state where the hotel stands is always the place of supply, which is why accommodation is invariably billed with that state's local taxes regardless of where the guest's business is registered.
