Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Palaniappa Nagar, Valasaravakkam

Businesses in Valasaravakkam looking for GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing want two things: work done correctly and someone answerable when questions come. Valasaravakkam has shifted from farmland to apartment blocks, and promoters, interior contractors and building material suppliers now work alongside supermarkets and clinics on Arcot Road and in Alwarthirunagar. Works contract taxation drives most disputes here: the 18 per cent rate on contract services, blocked input credit on construction under Section 17(5) and GSTR-7 TDS where contracts involve government bodies. We serve this belt — including Virugambakkam and Alwarthirunagar — with fixed fees quoted upfront, a written document checklist, and filings completed ahead of statutory due dates. Every acknowledgement is shared the day it is generated, and our support continues if the department raises any query on work we have filed.

GST jurisdiction for Valasaravakkam (PIN 600087): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai South Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Valasaravakkam before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for Builders and Contractors in Valasaravakkam
Under-construction residential sales are taxed at 1 percent for affordable housing and 5 percent for other units, both without input credit, while commercial works contracts run at 18 percent with credit. Builders must procure at least 80 percent of inputs and input services from registered suppliers each year; any shortfall attracts tax under reverse charge, and cement bought from unregistered dealers is taxed under reverse charge at its full rate regardless of the shortfall test. Development rights and joint development agreements carry their own liability trigger points. A specialist runs the 80-20 computation annually and tracks reverse charge on cement and landowner area sharing so project costing stays accurate.
For GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Monthly Filing in Valasaravakkam the working timeline is Filed before the 11th and 20th of every month, counted from the point your documents are complete. The realistic completion date is confirmed to you in writing before work starts, and the acknowledgement is shared on WhatsApp immediately after filing.

You deal with one accountable person who knows your business, your turnover pattern and your filing history. No repeating your story to a new voice every month, and no file falling between two desks when a deadline is approaching.

Experience Across Trades and Sectors

Traders, manufacturers, contractors, e-commerce sellers, professionals and service exporters — we have handled GST for all of them. Whatever mix of goods and services your Valasaravakkam business supplies, the rate, classification and place-of-supply questions have almost certainly crossed our desk before.

How It Works

Our Monthly Returns Process

Monthly data collection

At month end we remind you and collect sales invoices, purchase bills and credit notes in whatever format you maintain, including Excel, Tally exports or scanned copies.

GSTR-1 preparation and filing

We prepare invoice-wise outward supply details, validate GSTINs of your B2B customers, summarise B2C supplies and file GSTR-1 on the portal before the 11th.

ITC reconciliation with GSTR-2B

We download your auto-drafted GSTR-2B, match it against purchase records, and claim only eligible input tax credit so that mismatches do not trigger scrutiny notices later.

Tax computation and confirmation

We compute net tax payable after ITC set-off, share the working with you for approval, and generate the payment challan for any cash liability.

GSTR-3B filing and reporting

After your confirmation and tax payment, we file GSTR-3B before the 20th and send you both filed acknowledgements along with a one-page summary of the month.

Outcomes

What You Get

Practical outcomes our clients measure us by.

★

Books and Returns That Agree at Year End

Because turnover in your GST returns is kept aligned with your accounts through the year, income tax filing and statutory audit proceed without the GST-versus-books mismatch queries that now surface routinely through data matching.

★

Every Eligible Rupee of ITC Claimed

Systematic GSTR-2B matching and supplier follow-up mean input tax credit that was leaking away under self-filing is captured each month, directly reducing the cash you pay out with every GSTR-3B.

★

Waiver Benefits Never Missed

Late-fee waivers and amnesty windows notified by the GST Council are applied to your history within their deadlines, capturing reliefs that most businesses only hear about once the window has already closed.

★

Advances Treated Correctly

Advances received for services attract GST on receipt while advances for goods generally do not; applying this distinction correctly means you neither prepay tax unnecessarily nor omit a liability that surfaces later with interest.

★

Stronger Standing with Corporate Buyers

Large buyers check vendor GST compliance before releasing payments and renewing contracts. A clean filing record with timely GSTR-1 uploads keeps your invoices reflecting in their GSTR-2B and your payments unblocked.

★

Credit Notes That Actually Reduce Your Tax

Sales returns, discounts and price revisions are adjusted through properly reported credit notes within the statutory window, so you never keep paying tax on turnover you have already reversed.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Time costRoughly an hour a month to send data and approve drafts; the portal work, reconciliation and follow-up are ours.Hours every month lost to portal errors, JSON files, OTP failures and reworking figures — usually on the due date itself.
Input tax creditPurchase register matched against GSTR-2B each period, with defaulting suppliers chased so eligible credit is actually captured.Credit claimed from books alone; mismatches with GSTR-2B mean lost credit or excess claims that invite departmental queries.
Registration and amendmentsQuery-resistant applications prepared correctly the first time, with supporting documents matched to what proper officers actually verify.Repeated clarification memos and resubmissions, with weeks lost because a rent agreement or premises photograph did not meet expectations.
Keeping up with changesRate changes, portal updates and new thresholds such as the Rs.5 crore e-invoice limit are tracked by us and applied to your case proactively.Changes are discovered after the fact — often through a rejected filing, a blocked e-way bill or a departmental letter.
Annual return preparationMonthly reconciliations roll naturally into GSTR-9, filed comfortably before 31 December with figures already agreed through the year.Twelve months of unmatched data reconstructed in December, with differences discovered too late to be corrected cleanly.
Due-date trackingA maintained compliance calendar with internal cut-offs days before the 11th and the 20th; we chase you for data, not the other way around.Deadlines remembered from memory or phone alarms; one busy week and the return slips past the due date.

GST Council

GST slashed on COVID medicines, oxygen equipment and ambulances until 30 September 2021

44th GST Council Meeting (video conferencing) — 12 June 2021 · 2021-06-12

Acting on a Group of Ministers report, the Council cut rates on COVID relief goods until 30 September 2021. Tocilizumab and Amphotericin B moved to nil, while Remdesivir and anti-coagulants such as heparin were reduced to 5 per cent. Medical grade oxygen, oxygen concentrators, ventilators, BiPAP machines, COVID testing kits and specified diagnostic kits all moved from 12 to 5 per cent. Pulse oximeters, hand sanitiser, temperature check equipment and crematorium furnaces moved to 5 per cent, and ambulances from 28 to 12 per cent.

Practical effect: These were temporary rates with a hard expiry, so suppliers must be able to show that concessional invoices fall inside the notified relief period.

Case Law

Wrong GSTIN of the customer typed into GSTR-1 can be corrected even after the deadline

Pentacle Plant Machineries (P) Ltd v. Office of the GST Council — Madras High Court, W.P. No. 1022 of 2020, decided 23 February 2021 (Anita Sumanth J.) · 2021-02-23

The supplier keyed in the customer's Uttar Pradesh GST number instead of the Andhra Pradesh one while filing GSTR-1, and the correction window had lapsed. The Madras High Court allowed the writ petition and directed that the return be permitted to be amended, describing the mistake as a bona fide human error. The Court observed that assessees should not be prejudiced from availing credit they are otherwise legitimately entitled to, particularly where the matching forms were never notified.

What to do about it: A typographical GSTIN error that has cost your buyer their credit is curable — do not simply write off the credit as lost because the portal has closed the amendment window.

Portal Advisory

New portal statement tracks ITC reversed and reclaimed

GSTN Advisory dated 31 August 2023 — Electronic Credit Reversal and Re-claimed Statement · 2023-08-31

GSTN introduced the Electronic Credit Reversal and Re-claimed Statement on the portal to track credit reversed in Table 4B(2) of GSTR-3B and later reclaimed in Tables 4D(1) and 4A(5). It applied from the August 2023 return for monthly filers and from the July to September 2023 quarter for quarterly filers. The cumulative opening balance of reversals awaiting reclaim had to be reported by 30 November 2023, with up to three amendments allowed until 31 December 2023. The portal now warns when reclaimed credit exceeds the available balance.

Practical effect: Maintain a running register of credit reversed and reclaimed, because the portal flags excess reclaims and the data feeds departmental scrutiny.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

What is the process for GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing?
The process runs in clear stages: Monthly data collection; GSTR-1 preparation and filing; ITC reconciliation with GSTR-2B; Tax computation and confirmation. A senior consultant reviews your file at each stage rather than passing it to a data-entry desk, and you receive a confirmation with the filed documents once it is complete. You always know which stage your work is at — we update you on WhatsApp instead of leaving you to follow up.
Which GST office handles Valasaravakkam businesses?
Businesses in Valasaravakkam (PIN 600087) generally fall under the CGST Chennai South Commissionerate, with state-jurisdiction cases handled by the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department. Your exact division and range can be confirmed from your GSTIN on the GST portal. We regularly appear before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and hearings, so we know the local practice and documentation preferences.
How exactly do I pay RCM in my return and claim it back as credit?
Report the taxable value and tax in Table 3.1(d) of GSTR-3B; this liability must be discharged in cash through the electronic cash ledger, because input tax credit cannot be used to pay reverse charge dues. In the same return, claim the amount as ITC in Table 4(A)(2) or 4(A)(3), so the net impact is usually nil. RCM invoices from registered suppliers like GTAs appear in GSTR-2B, but credit for unregistered-supplier RCM rests on your self-invoice, and Circular 211/5/2024 confirms the Section 16(4) deadline runs from the year of that self-invoice. Businesses in Valasaravakkam that skip the 3.1(d) reporting but claim the credit invite automatic mismatch flags.
What is the due date for GSTR-3B in Tamil Nadu?
For monthly filers, GSTR-3B is due on the 20th of the following month. If you are registered in Tamil Nadu and have opted for the QRMP scheme, your quarterly GSTR-3B is due on the 22nd of the month following the quarter. GSTR-3B is the summary return through which you actually pay tax, so missing it attracts a late fee of Rs.50 per day (Rs.20 for nil returns) plus interest at 18 percent per annum on tax paid late.
What documents do I need to give my GST consultant every month?
For monthly returns you need your sales invoices (or a sales register), purchase invoices, credit and debit notes, details of advances received for services, and any export or SEZ supply documents. If you use accounting software, an exported sales and purchase summary is enough. We then match your purchases against GSTR-2B on the portal before claiming input tax credit. Most clients in Valasaravakkam simply share their data on WhatsApp or email by the 5th of each month and we handle the rest. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 to set up a simple monthly routine.
We hire security guards from an agency. Should they charge GST or should we pay it ourselves?
Check the agency's constitution. Since 1 January 2019, security services by way of supply of security personnel provided by any person other than a body corporate to a registered person fall under reverse charge, so your business pays the 18 percent directly and claims credit. If the agency is a body corporate, such as a private limited company, it charges GST under forward charge on its invoice. Recipients registered under the composition scheme are excluded from this reverse charge entry. Businesses in Valasaravakkam commonly pay agencies' forward-charge invoices while also missing their own RCM cases, so an annual review of security and manpower bills is worthwhile.
Our Valasaravakkam factory hires lorries through a transport agency. Who pays the GST?
Under the reverse charge entry, when a GTA that has not opted for forward charge provides service to specified recipients, the recipient pays the 5 percent tax. Specified recipients include factories, registered persons, body corporates, partnership firms including AOPs, co-operative societies and casual taxable persons. Your factory therefore pays 5 percent in cash through GSTR-3B, reports it in the reverse charge tables, and claims the same amount as input tax credit since freight is a business expense. Confirm from the transporter's invoice or declaration whether it has opted for forward charge, because paying RCM on an FCM invoice creates double taxation. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 if your freight entries need a review.
What is the difference between CPIN and CIN, and how long is a GST challan valid?
When you generate a challan in Form PMT-06 on the portal, the system issues a fourteen-digit Common Portal Identification Number, the CPIN, which identifies the unpaid challan and remains valid for fifteen days. Once the bank receives your payment, a seventeen-digit Challan Identification Number, the CIN, is generated, comprising the CPIN plus the bank code, and the amount credits your electronic cash ledger. If a challan expires unpaid, simply generate a fresh one; no consequence follows. Payment modes include net banking, UPI, cards, NEFT or RTGS, and over-the-counter deposit up to Rs.10,000 per challan per tax period.
Should I choose QRMP or continue monthly filing?
It depends on your customer profile. QRMP means fewer returns and suits businesses selling mainly to consumers or unregistered buyers. However, if most customers are registered businesses, monthly GSTR-1 (or disciplined use of IFF) gets them input tax credit faster, which many corporate buyers insist on. Cash flow also matters: under QRMP you still pay monthly via PMT-06, so there is no tax deferral, only compliance simplification. We review turnover, buyer mix and working capital before recommending either route to businesses in Valasaravakkam. A short call on +91 - 9600 606 444 is enough to decide.
Our company spends on CSR activities. Is the GST paid on those purchases creditable?
Not any more. Section 17(5)(fa), inserted with effect from 1 October 2023, specifically blocks input tax credit on goods or services used for corporate social responsibility activities under Section 135 of the Companies Act. Before this date the position was contested, with advance rulings going both ways, so credits availed for earlier periods may still be defensible on merits if questioned. For current periods, GST on CSR purchases, whether school furniture donated or medical supplies distributed, is a cost. Companies in Valasaravakkam should route CSR procurement through a separate expense code so their monthly reconciliation automatically excludes these invoices from the ITC claim.
How do I file a nil GSTR-3B by SMS?
From the mobile number registered as authorised signatory, send an SMS to 14409 in the format NIL space 3B space your GSTIN space tax period in MMYYYY format. The portal replies with a six-digit verification code; confirm by sending CNF space 3B space the code to 14409. You receive an ARN on successful filing. SMS filing works only if the return is genuinely nil, meaning no outward supplies, no liability of any kind, and no pending returns for earlier periods. If the SMS route fails, we can file it online for you the same day.
Our security agency does not charge GST on its bills. Is that correct?
Quite possibly, yes. Since 1 January 2019, security services meaning supply of security personnel, when provided by any person other than a body corporate to a registered person, fall under reverse charge, so the agency correctly bills without tax and you pay 18 percent through GSTR-3B in cash, claiming ITC. If your security agency is a private limited company, however, RCM does not apply and it must charge GST on its invoice under forward charge. Composition taxpayers as recipients are excluded from this entry. Confirm the agency's constitution from its PAN, because paying under the wrong mechanism creates trouble for both sides.
What is the GST rate on a works contract for a commercial building?
Under GST, a works contract relating to immovable property is treated wholly as a supply of services, and the standard rate is 18 percent on the contract value, with the contractor eligible for input tax credit on cement, steel and other inputs. This applies to construction, fabrication, erection, repair and renovation contracts for factories, offices and commercial buildings. The old VAT-plus-service-tax splitting of material and labour is gone; one rate applies to the whole consideration. Contractors should also note that free-issue materials supplied by the client can affect valuation, so contract drafting deserves attention before quoting.
How does GST work on lorry freight paid to a goods transport agency?
A goods transport agency, identified by its issue of a consignment note, is taxed in one of two ways. By default, specified recipients such as companies and registered persons pay 5 percent under reverse charge on the freight and can claim it as ITC. Alternatively, the GTA may opt to pay tax itself under forward charge, at 5 percent without ITC or 18 percent with ITC after the September 2025 rate rationalisation replaced the earlier 12 percent option, by filing the prescribed declaration for the financial year; the invoice should state this option. Transport by an individual lorry owner without a consignment note is not a GTA service and is exempt. Check each transporter's invoice wording before deciding who pays the tax.
The GST rate on my product changed. Which rate applies to pending orders and invoices?
Section 14 of the CGST Act decides this by looking at three events: the date of supply, the date of invoice and the date of payment. Broadly, if any two of the three events fall after the rate change, the new rate applies; if two fall before, the old rate applies. So goods delivered in Valasaravakkam before 22 September 2025 but invoiced and paid for afterwards attract the new rate, while goods delivered and invoiced earlier keep the old rate even if payment came later. Document dates carefully during any transition window, because officers test these invoices in scrutiny.
What does a GST consultant in Valasaravakkam typically charge for refund and compliance work?
Fees vary with complexity. Simple filings such as an LUT or an excess cash ledger refund are usually fixed-fee assignments, while export and inverted duty refunds involve invoice statements, formula workings and departmental follow-up, so they may be priced as a fixed fee or a small percentage of the refund secured. Monthly reconciliation and return packages are subscription-based. ChennaiGST publishes transparent pricing starting at Rs.749 with no percentage cut on straightforward claims, and you pay only after the scope is agreed in writing. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 for a quote specific to your turnover and refund type.
My shop's landlord in Valasaravakkam is not GST registered. Do I pay GST on the rent myself?
Yes, if you are registered. With effect from 10 October 2024, renting of any immovable property other than a residential dwelling by an unregistered person to a registered person was notified under reverse charge, so a registered tenant must pay 18 percent on the rent in cash through GSTR-3B and can claim ITC subject to the usual conditions. Composition taxpayers were subsequently excluded from this entry with effect from 16 January 2025. You must also raise a monthly self-invoice since the landlord is unregistered. Many shop and godown tenants in Valasaravakkam remain unaware of this recent entry; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to regularise past months.
Does buying from unregistered dealers attract reverse charge for everyone?
No. The general reverse charge on all unregistered purchases under Section 9(4) was never fully implemented and now applies only to notified classes, principally real estate. A promoter must procure at least eighty percent of inputs and input services from registered suppliers for a project; on any shortfall, the promoter pays 18 percent under RCM, and cement purchased from an unregistered dealer attracts RCM at the rate applicable to cement, 18 percent since the September 2025 rate rationalisation reduced it from 28 percent, irrespective of the eighty percent test. Transfer of development rights and long-term leases to promoters are also covered. An ordinary trader or service provider in Valasaravakkam buying stationery from an unregistered shop has no Section 9(4) liability at all.
What documents are required for GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing in Valasaravakkam?
For GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing you will generally need: Sales invoices or sales register for the month, Purchase invoices or purchase register, Credit notes and debit notes issued during the month, GST portal login credentials, Bank statement for the period, if reconciliation is needed. The exact list depends on your constitution — proprietorship, partnership, LLP or company — and on the specifics of your case. Send what you have on WhatsApp to +91 - 9600 606 444 and we will confirm within the same working day exactly what else is needed, so nothing is rejected later for a missing paper.
Can I get GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B monthly filing done online without visiting the office?
Yes, the entire process can be handled online. You share scanned documents on WhatsApp or email, we prepare and file everything on the GST portal, and you receive the acknowledgement and filed copies digitally. Businesses in Valasaravakkam regularly complete monthly returns with us without a single office visit. If a physical verification or personal hearing is required by the department, we guide you through it.
Do you provide gst return filing for small businesses and proprietorships in Valasaravakkam?
Yes. A large share of our clients in Valasaravakkam are proprietors, small traders, shop owners, freelancers and family businesses rather than large companies. The fee of Rs.749/month and the process are the same regardless of size, and we explain the compliance position in plain language — in Tamil or English — so you understand what is being filed on your behalf and why.
