Trade Profile and GST Jurisdiction for Vandalur

Vandalur is known for the Arignar Anna Zoological Park and the Kilambakkam bus terminus on GST Road, with the Outer Ring Road beginning here and institutions such as Crescent Institute and IIITDM at Melakottaiyur close by. Plot promoters and layout developers dominate local business, so distinguishing the exempt sale of land from taxable development services and pricing works contract billing correctly are the recurring GST issues. From a first registration to the annual return, the full range of DRC-01/DRC-01A Demand Reply is available to Vandalur businesses without stepping far from the shop or office — documents travel over WhatsApp, and our Chennai premises are open to anyone who prefers a face-to-face discussion. We serve Urapakkam and Perungalathur on the same footing, applying one rule everywhere: reconcile before filing, file before the due date, and keep the client informed at every stage.

GST jurisdiction for Vandalur (PIN 600048): businesses here generally fall under the CGST Chennai Outer Commissionerate. We regularly represent clients from Vandalur before this jurisdiction for registrations, clarifications and notice hearings, and can confirm your exact division and range from your GSTIN. State-jurisdiction cases are handled with the Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Department.
GST for Professional Services Firms in Vandalur
Professional firms bill at 18 percent, but the mechanics differ by profession: services of advocates to business entities are taxed in the client's hands under reverse charge, while chartered accountants, company secretaries and architects charge tax on their own invoices. Fees received in advance are taxable on receipt, and retainers must be invoiced within the time limits of Section 31(2). Amounts recovered from clients as a pure agent, such as government fees paid on their behalf, stay outside taxable value only if every condition of Rule 33 is met and documented. A specialist sets up retainer invoicing, pure agent documentation and branch cross-charges correctly; call +91 - 9600 606 444 to discuss your firm.
Yes, DRC-01/DRC-01A Demand Reply in Vandalur can be completed fully online — no office visit is required at any stage, since e-signatures, OTP verification and digital document exchange cover the entire formality, with fees from Rs.4,999.
Why Us

Why Vandalur Businesses Choose ChennaiGST

Not a bulk-filing portal. A senior consultant knows your file, your jurisdiction and your deadlines.

✓

One Dedicated Point of Contact

You deal with one accountable person who knows your business, your turnover pattern and your filing history. No repeating your story to a new voice every month, and no file falling between two desks when a deadline is approaching.

✓

Transparent, Fixed Fees Quoted Upfront

You are told the full fee before we begin, in writing. No surprise additions for uploads, revisions or acknowledgements. Government fees and taxes, where applicable, are shown separately, so businesses in Vandalur always know exactly what the engagement costs them.

✓

Waiver and Amnesty Windows Applied for You

Whenever the GST Council notifies a late-fee waiver or an amnesty window for pending returns or old demands, we check every client's history against it and act within the deadline. Relief that businesses in Vandalur would otherwise read about after it lapsed reaches our clients in time.

✓

Reverse Charge Tracked, Not Forgotten

Freight paid to transporters, advocate fees, imported services and other notified supplies attract GST under reverse charge, with self-invoicing where the supplier is unregistered. We maintain a running RCM check every period, because this is the liability self-filers most consistently miss.

✓

Experience Across Trades and Sectors

Traders, manufacturers, contractors, e-commerce sellers, professionals and service exporters — we have handled GST for all of them. Whatever mix of goods and services your Vandalur business supplies, the rate, classification and place-of-supply questions have almost certainly crossed our desk before.

✓

GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C Handled In-House

The annual return and, where turnover crosses Rs.5 crore, the self-certified reconciliation statement in GSTR-9C are prepared by the same team that filed your monthly returns. Nothing about your year has to be rediscovered or explained to a stranger in December.

How It Works

Our Demand Reply Process

Demand analysis

We examine whether the notice is under Section 73 or 74, check the limitation period, and break the demand into issues that can be defended separately.

Merits assessment

Each issue is tested against your records, GSTR-2B and case law, and we give you a candid view of what is defensible and what is genuinely payable.

DRC-06 reply drafting

A detailed statutory reply is drafted in Form DRC-06 with reconciliations, invoices and legal grounds, shared for your approval and filed on the portal in time.

Hearing and payment strategy

We represent you at the personal hearing. For any admitted liability we file DRC-03 promptly, using the concessional closure available under Section 73 where applicable.

Order and next steps

We track the adjudication outcome, review any order in DRC-07, and advise on rectification or appeal in APL-01 within three months if the demand is confirmed.

Why a Specialist Matters

With ChennaiGST vs Doing It Yourself

AspectWith ChennaiGSTDIY / Unattended
Time costRoughly an hour a month to send data and approve drafts; the portal work, reconciliation and follow-up are ours.Hours every month lost to portal errors, JSON files, OTP failures and reworking figures — usually on the due date itself.
Late fees and interestFilings go in ahead of statutory dates, so the Rs.50-per-day late fee and 18 percent interest never arise.Late fees accumulate silently every delayed day, and interest on unpaid tax runs at 18 percent per annum.
Goods in transitE-way bills generated correctly and matched to invoices, so consignments pass roadside inspections without detention or penalty.A defective or missing e-way bill can mean detention at a checkpoint, with penalties that dwarf the tax on the consignment.
Due-date trackingA maintained compliance calendar with internal cut-offs days before the 11th and the 20th; we chase you for data, not the other way around.Deadlines remembered from memory or phone alarms; one busy week and the return slips past the due date.
Refund claimsRFD-01 filed with complete statements and annexures, tracked from ARN to bank credit, with any deficiency memo answered promptly.Incomplete claims bounce back as deficiency memos while the refund sits unclaimed for months and working capital stays blocked.
Keeping up with changesRate changes, portal updates and new thresholds such as the Rs.5 crore e-invoice limit are tracked by us and applied to your case proactively.Changes are discovered after the fact — often through a rejected filing, a blocked e-way bill or a departmental letter.

AAR Ruling

Canteen contractor serving food in office premises taxable at 5 percent

Goodwill Industrial Canteen - AAR Tamil Nadu, Order No. TN/09/AAR/2018, dated 30 August 2018 · 2018-08-30

The applicant prepared food and served it in the canteens of client companies at their premises. It sought the rate applicable to this arrangement. The Authority held that the supply of food and beverages on the premises of an industrial undertaking was taxable at 18 percent up to 26 July 2018 and at 5 percent from 27 July 2018, when the restaurant service entry was amended to cover canteens at offices and factories, the concessional rate being available without input tax credit.

How we apply it: Chennai canteen contractors should bill factory and office canteens at 5 percent and forgo input tax credit on their purchases.

Circular

Refund of tax paid under the wrong head and the two-year limit for claiming it

Circular No. 162/18/2021-GST dated 25 September 2021 · 2021-09-25

CBIC clarified that the words subsequently held in section 77 of the CGST Act and section 19 of the IGST Act cover both a case where the department holds a supply to be inter-State or intra-State and a case where the taxpayer himself realises the error, provided the correct tax is then paid. Under rule 89(1A), the refund of the wrongly paid tax must be claimed within two years of paying tax under the correct head, and for payments made before 24 September 2021 the period runs from that date.

Why this matters: If you have paid CGST and SGST on what was actually an inter-State supply, pay the IGST first and then claim the refund within two years, with no interest liability under section 77.

Notification

Soap, shampoo, hair oil and toothpaste cut to 5 per cent

Notification No. 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate), dated 17 September 2025, Schedule I, Chapters 33 and 34 · 2025-09-17

Hair oil and shampoo, toilet soap in the form of bars and cakes other than industrial soap, toothpaste, tooth powder and dental floss were moved into Schedule I at five per cent from 22 September 2025, down from eighteen per cent. Other soaps and organic surface-active preparations, and dentifrices other than the listed items, remain in Schedule II at eighteen per cent, so the concession is confined to the everyday personal care items the Council named.

How we apply it: FMCG distributors must apply five per cent only to the named items and keep the balance of the toiletries range at eighteen per cent, since the split within one chapter is easy to get wrong.

Already Holding the Notice? Read It in About a Minute

Upload the PDF to our free GST Notice Analyser. It identifies which of 34 notice types you have, pulls out the DIN, GSTIN and tax period, reads the reply date printed on the notice and tells you plainly whether that date has already passed — along with the documents and reconciliations you will need. No payment, no account. If the notice does not state a date we can read, it says so rather than guessing one for you.

Analyse my notice — free WhatsApp it to a consultant

The analyser reports what your notice says and the statutory position for that form. It is not a substitute for a consultant reading your actual records, and a reply should be reviewed before you file it.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from practising GST consultants — based on the CGST Act, current CBIC notifications and day-to-day portal experience.

What is the process for DRC-01/DRC-01A demand reply?
The process runs in clear stages: Demand analysis; Merits assessment; DRC-06 reply drafting; Hearing and payment strategy. A senior consultant reviews your file at each stage rather than passing it to a data-entry desk, and you receive a confirmation with the filed documents once it is complete. You always know which stage your work is at — we update you on WhatsApp instead of leaving you to follow up.
Can I get DRC-01/DRC-01A demand reply done online without visiting the office?
Yes, the entire process can be handled online. You share scanned documents on WhatsApp or email, we prepare and file everything on the GST portal, and you receive the acknowledgement and filed copies digitally. Businesses in Vandalur regularly complete demand reply with us without a single office visit. If a physical verification or personal hearing is required by the department, we guide you through it.
What are the exact steps to file a DRC-03 voluntary payment on the GST portal?
Log in and go to Services, then User Services, then My Applications, choose Intimation of Voluntary Payment DRC-03 and click New Application. Select the cause of payment, such as voluntary, show cause notice, audit or annual return, pick the section and financial year, and enter the tax, interest and penalty amounts head-wise under IGST, CGST and SGST. A saved draft remains available for fifteen days. Offset the amounts from your ledgers, sign with DSC or EVC, and download the ARN acknowledgement. Our Vandalur office files DRC-03 the same day for clients; call +91 - 9600 606 444.
What is Form DRC-03 and when should I use it?
DRC-03 is the form for making a voluntary payment of tax, interest or penalty on the GST portal, either before a show cause notice is issued or within thirty days of receiving one. It is commonly used to pay liabilities found during a self-review, to respond to a DRC-01A intimation, to settle audit findings, or to pay dues flagged in scrutiny. Paying through DRC-03 under Section 73 before the notice, along with interest, means no penalty and no notice on that amount. Select the correct cause of payment and period in the form, because a wrongly mapped DRC-03 creates reconciliation trouble later.
How do I reply to a DRC-01 show cause notice online?
The reply to a show cause notice summarised in DRC-01 is filed in Form DRC-06 on the GST portal. Log in, open View Additional Notices and Orders, select the case and use the reply option to upload your written submissions and supporting documents, and opt for a personal hearing. A good DRC-06 addresses each allegation separately, annexes reconciliations, invoices and ledgers, cites the relevant provisions and circulars, and raises limitation and jurisdiction objections where available. File within the time allowed in the notice. ChennaiGST drafts DRC-06 replies for Vandalur businesses with a hearing strategy built in from the start.
Should I just pay the amount mentioned in a DRC-01A intimation?
Only after checking the working. DRC-01A is an invitation to settle before a show cause notice, and if you agree with the ascertainment you can pay through DRC-03 and intimate it in Part B, after which no notice is issued for that amount. In a Section 73 matter, paying with interest at this stage means zero penalty, which is a genuine saving. But officers' ascertainments often ignore reconciliations, eligible credits or amounts already paid. Verify the computation, pay only what is truly due, and contest the balance in Part B with reasons. ChennaiGST routinely trims DRC-01A figures for clients before payment.
Can I use my input tax credit balance to pay a DRC-03 liability?
Partly. The tax component of a DRC-03 payment can be settled from the electronic credit ledger, subject to the usual cross-utilisation rules between IGST, CGST and SGST. However, interest, penalty and late fee can never be paid from credit; those components must come from the electronic cash ledger, so you may need to deposit a challan first. The portal shows both ledger balances on the payment screen and lets you split the utilisation. Planning this split correctly avoids depositing cash unnecessarily when credit is lying idle, which is a routine saving we make for clients every month.
How much time does the GST department have to issue a demand under Section 73?
For a Section 73 demand, the adjudication order must be passed within three years from the due date of the annual return for the financial year concerned, and the show cause notice must be issued at least three months before that deadline. For Section 74 fraud cases, the order deadline is five years with the notice issued at least six months earlier. For tax periods from FY 2024-25 onwards, a new common provision in Section 74A applies with its own timelines. Always check limitation first; notices issued beyond these dates can be challenged as time-barred, which ChennaiGST examines in every Vandalur demand case.
What happens if I do not reply to an ASMT-10 scrutiny notice?
If no satisfactory explanation is filed within thirty days, or you fail to correct the discrepancies, the officer can escalate the matter to a departmental audit under Section 65, a special audit under Section 66, an inspection under Section 67, or straightaway initiate a demand under Section 73 or Section 74. In practice, unanswered ASMT-10 notices convert into DRC-01A intimations and then show cause notices, where penalties and hearings enter the picture. Replying at the scrutiny stage is the cheapest point to close an issue, because you are only explaining, not yet defending a demand. Do not let the window lapse.
Is everyone facing GST prosecution eligible to apply for compounding?
No. The statute excludes several categories. A person who has already been allowed to compound once in respect of the specified serious offences cannot compound again. Persons accused of issuing invoices without any supply of goods or services, the classic fake billing offence, were excluded from compounding altogether by the Finance Act 2023, and anyone convicted by a court under the GST law is also barred. Notably, the same 2023 amendments removed the earlier bar on compounding where the conduct was also an offence under another law, so that ground no longer disqualifies an applicant. Eligibility should be assessed before paying the underlying dues, since payment is a precondition but not a guarantee of compounding.
I discovered an old ASMT-13 order only after the return-filing window closed. What can I do now?
Once the sixty-day window and the further sixty-day extended window under Section 62 have both lapsed, filing the return no longer withdraws the order, and the estimated demand in the liability register becomes recoverable. Your remedy shifts to an appeal in Form APL-01 within three months of the order's communication, with the prescribed pre-deposit, arguing the actual figures from your books against the officer's estimate. Appellate authorities regularly scale down best judgment estimates when the genuine return data is placed on record. Check the Additional Notices tab for any other unnoticed orders at the same time; Vandalur non-filers often find several. Call +91 - 9600 606 444 urgently.
Why is my e-way bill generation blocked on the portal?
Under Rule 138E, the e-way bill facility is blocked when a taxpayer has not filed GSTR-3B (or CMP-08 for composition dealers) for two or more consecutive tax periods. Since an e-way bill is mandatory for moving goods worth more than Rs.50,000, blocking effectively halts dispatches. The remedy is straightforward: file the pending returns with late fee and interest, after which the facility unblocks automatically, usually the next day. Transporters and suppliers can also be affected when a counterparty GSTIN is blocked. We clear return backlogs for businesses in Vandalur on priority; call +91 - 9600 606 444.
Should I claim a refund of my accumulated ITC or just carry it forward?
Carry-forward suits businesses whose future output tax will absorb the credit within a few months, since it avoids refund paperwork. A refund makes sense when the credit keeps growing and will never be absorbed, which is typical for exporters under LUT and businesses with inverted duty structure, because idle credit is interest-free money locked with the government. Remember that refunds are only available in categories permitted by Section 54; ordinary accumulated credit from slow sales cannot be refunded. A quick review of your credit ledger trend over six months usually makes the right answer obvious.
Which goods and services attract the new 40 percent GST rate?
The 40 percent rate is confined to luxury and demerit supplies. It covers aerated waters, caffeinated and other sugary carbonated beverages, large cars beyond the small-car specifications, motorcycles above 350cc, yachts, personal aircraft, and specified actionable claims such as betting, casinos and online money gaming. Pan masala and tobacco products continue under their earlier levy structure until the compensation cess obligations are discharged, after which they move to the 40 percent rate as notified. If your business deals in any of these lines, pricing and working capital need careful planning.
How is GST charged on clothes and footwear after the rate change?
The rate now turns on a per-piece price line of Rs.2,500. Apparel, made-up textile articles and footwear with a sale value up to Rs.2,500 per piece attract 5 percent GST, while pieces priced above Rs.2,500 attract 18 percent. The test applies item by item, so a single invoice from a garment shop in Vandalur can carry both rates: a Rs.1,800 shirt at 5 percent and a Rs.4,000 pair of shoes at 18 percent on the same bill. Configure the billing software to test the price of each line item automatically rather than applying one blanket rate.
What are the common types of GST notices a business can receive?
The frequent ones are: REG-03 seeking clarification on a registration application; GSTR-3A for non-filing of returns; ASMT-10 pointing out discrepancies found on scrutiny of returns; DRC-01A intimating an ascertained tax liability before formal proceedings; DRC-01, the show cause notice under Section 73 or 74; ADT-01 intimating a departmental audit; REG-17 proposing cancellation of registration; RFD-08 proposing rejection of a refund claim; and summons under Section 70. Each has its own reply form and deadline, ranging from seven working days to thirty days, so identifying the notice type correctly is the first step in responding. When in doubt, call +91 - 9600 606 444.
I declare income under Section 44ADA. Does that mean I am exempt from GST?
No, this is a common myth. Section 44ADA is a presumptive taxation scheme under the Income Tax Act that lets professionals declare fifty percent of gross receipts as income; it has nothing to do with GST. GST liability depends solely on aggregate turnover crossing the registration threshold and the nature of your supplies. In fact, the two departments now cross-match data, so gross receipts reported in your ITR and Form 26AS that exceed the GST turnover you declared are a known trigger for notices. Treat the two laws as parallel obligations, each with its own limits and filings.
What are OIDAR services under GST and who pays the tax on them?
OIDAR means Online Information Database Access or Retrieval services, delivered over the internet, such as cloud services, e-books, streaming, online advertising and automated e-learning. When a foreign OIDAR provider supplies these to unregistered persons in India, the foreign provider itself must take a simplified registration in Form REG-10 and file monthly return GSTR-5A. From 1 October 2023, the definition was widened, so almost every unregistered Indian recipient is covered. When the Indian recipient is GST-registered, the tax instead falls on the recipient under reverse charge as an import of services.
How much does DRC-01/DRC-01A demand reply cost in Vandalur?

The fee covers professional work end to end: document review, preparation, filing and follow-up until completion.
